Agent says Patriots considered trading up to No. 2 for Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield went to the Browns with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. But Mayfield’s agent says that if the Browns had chosen someone else, a massive trade that would have shaken up the entire NFL could have happened: The Patriots trading all the way up to No. 2 and taking Mayfield as Tom Brady‘s heir apparent.

Jack Mills, the agent for Mayfield, said on Andrew Brandt’s podcast that there was a real chance that the Patriots could have traded with the Giants for the second overall pick, and that the Patriots would have selected Mayfield.

“We had another team which is going to surprise you. Another team had said, ‘You may get a big surprise on draft day, at No. 2, if he’s available.’ And it was the Patriots,” Mills said. “They had 23 and they had 31 and they had two seconds. We thought, ‘That’s gonna be a heck of a move, to get up that high from where they are.’ And of course he wasn’t available so we never knew if that was reality or not.”

There was talk before the draft of the Patriots trading up for a quarterback, but trading all the way up to No. 2 would have been incredibly hard to pull off. Given that Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman scoffed at trading down from No. 2, he surely would have demanded even more than the Patriots’ two first-round picks and two second-round picks. Would Bill Belichick, who has traditionally preferred trading down over trading up, really have pulled the trigger on a trade like that?

Then there’s the question of how Brady would have reacted: He’s already refusing to sayif he feels the Patriots appreciate him. How would he feel if the Patriots used a bounty of draft picks to take the next franchise quarterback, rather than using those picks on players who can help Brady win another Super Bowl this season?

We’ll never know for sure what would have happened if the Browns had chosen someone other than Mayfield. But it’s crazy to think about the fallout if he had ended up in New England.

Thank God that didn't happen. Don't mind Mayfield with the Browns, or Allen with the Bills, but Mayfield with the Pats would have been hard to deal with

I agree. It would have ruined the morale around here for years to come. First dealing with Brady and then mayfield.

This is just the Pats trolling the Jets.

How so?

The Jets are receiving a lot of praise for snagging Darnold, the consensus best QB in the draft, at #3 after the Browns took Mayfield instead.

This is the Pats way of saying they agreed with the Browns that Mayfield was #1, worth trading up for, but they wouldn't have traded up for Darnold.

Its a subtle shot they are taking at the Jets, but IMO thats what it is, they are leaking this to tweak the Jets and Jets fans.

Belichick has always been petty like this when it comes to the Jets.

Hope your right but I truly could care less. Darnold and Rosen were not only the safer picks and the all out better QBs to me. Not saying Mayfield isn’t the real deal and won’t be a franchise guy but he has to prove it to me before I believe so. Not as many 6’00” and under HOF QBs in this league as to the 6’3” and above. Breez and R. Wilson are on their way ofcourse but I can’t think of to many other. Fran Tarkentein and who else???

This is just an agent blowing smoke.
The Giants turned down the Bills offer of the first and second this year and next year's first. All much higher picks than the Patriots could offer.

I disagree. Mayfield is nothing special. The world will find that out soon enough.

Mayfield seems to be much like brady, a cocky in your face guy who will run to the sideline and point at you after he throws his 5th touchdown pass of the half and then run to the locker room without shaking your hand after a loss. While this may have been nice to do after beating the cheetahs, it's not the way I want our fqb to act any other time. After watching Darnold interviews, I think he might be more of a Peyton Manning type guy then a douches like brady

in thinking about it, I sense that what Belichick is doing here isn't meant for an audience of the Jets. It's meant for an audience of the media.

Despite Belichick having a remarkably mediocre draft record, the national NFL press acts like everything he thinks when it comes to the draft is golden. So if he says Mayfield was worth trading up for but Darnold wasn't, the narrative changes from how well Maccagnan did to how the Jets gave up three second rounders for the second best QB. That means the "pundits" turn on the Jets, ramping up the pressure on both the Jets and Darnold. He's trying to destroy the pick by using some of his best allies, the press.

this is coming from mayfield's agent. he's trying to build up HIS clients' profile. no one knows if the pats indeed would have moved up for him and no patriot employee would ever go on record saying so.

so i'm not sure how this is the pats trolling the jets when the pats didn't actually do anything here. mayfield's agent did all the talking

can you point to where belichick or anyone connected to the pats commented on this?

The only comments I saw were from Mayfield's agent. That's not surprising. Belichick wouldn't want his fingerprints on this, and he certainly wouldn't want to comment about players on other rosters. That's why the agent has done it.

and you think mayfield's agent was coordinating with belichick to spread this word that the pats were willing to trade up for mayfield in an attempt to make the jets selection of darnold look less positive?

since when do we take the words of agents spreading positive gossip about their own players at face value?

I do think it's possible, especially if the agent has a solid working relationship with Belichick. I'm not sure if he does or not.

Exactly!

This is very calculated and frankly I'm surprised that so many NYers (supposed to be street wise and savvy) are not savvy enough to see what Belichick is doing here, with a complicit media. He's clearly trying to sabotage the good feelings surrounding Darnold sliding to the Jets, but in his usual sneaky way.
