Agent says Patriots considered trading up to No. 2 for Baker Mayfield

I’m not sure about the idea of Belichick conspiring with the media. Although I’m well aware of the fact that many in the media assume everything the Patriots do is automatically a smart move. I’m pretty sure that BB loves nothing more than taking a little wind out of the Jets’ sails any opportunity he gets based on his obvious disdain for our team.

This is very calculated and frankly I'm surprised that so many NYers (supposed to be street wise and savvy) are not savvy enough to see what Belichick is doing here, with a complicit media. Here's clearly trying to sabotage the good feelings surrounding Darnold sliding to the Jets, but in his usual sneaky way.

other than woe-is-us jets fans theories, i've yet to see any reason to believe that belichick was working in cohoots with mayfield's agent to make poor jets fans feel bad about themselves.. can you point to any basis for this theory? does the agent represent a bunch of pats players? does the agent have any ties whatsoever to belichick?

yes, i know the pats worked out mayfield. other than that, is there any single link between belichick and mayfield's agent which would form the basis for the two of them getting together to mess with the minds of jets fans?

honestly, i saw the report yesterday that the agent said the pats were looking to trade up for mayfield. never once did i think - well then that makes the jets pick of darnold look worse. never even crossed my mind, nor tempered for one millisecond my enthusiasm for the jets pick.

This is just the Pats trolling the Jets.

How so?

The Jets are receiving a lot of praise for snagging Darnold, the consensus best QB in the draft, at #3 after the Browns took Mayfield instead.

This is the Pats way of saying they agreed with the Browns that Mayfield was #1, worth trading up for, but they wouldn't have traded up for Darnold.

Its a subtle shot they are taking at the Jets, but IMO thats what it is, they are leaking this to tweak the Jets and Jets fans.

Belichick has always been petty like this when it comes to the Jets.

I don't see the connection between the Pat's/Belichick and trolling the Jets.
Mayfield's agent said the Patriots may have surprised the league and traded up to 2 for Mayfield. He said that McDaniel said it right after the Pat's traded Cooks. It's not the Patriots/ Belichick leaking anything post draft.
its all about Mayfield's agent trying to hype his client and secure more $$$.

I don’t want to take the side of conspiracy theorists here, but we are talking about a douche who wrote his one day resignation to the Jets on a paper napkin, and has been bitter about Spygate for nearly 9 years. The league took away a 1st round pick from the Patriots and fined Belichick 1/2 a million bucks. (Patriots also got fined and additional 250K). And then Rex Ryan got Belichick all worked up over that so-called “rivalry”.

I think BB likes to give off the impression he doesn’t care about the Jets, but I think he relishes any opportunity to stick it to them. Just my opinion.

I’m not saying he’s behind this latest news. I agree it’s probably the agent letting everyone know that the almighty Patriots were interested in his boy. The Browns have been getting crushed for the Mayfield pick by a lot of people, and this is their way of saying “oh yeah, well Belichick wanted him”.

My comments about NE are in response to the idea that B.B. doesn’t concern himself with the Jets. I don’t believe that’s true.

There is NO WAY the Patriots were going to pony up the amount of draft picks it would have taken to move up from the 20's to #2 overall, it didn't happen and it was never going to happen. Mayfields agent is smoking crack, if he thinks that.
Let's say the Patriots did do it, how smart would that make Belicheck?? He trades away a possible FQB and the successer to Brady, to the 9ers for a 2nd round pick.
