Sam Darnold: I have to come in and earn respect

Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan spent a lot of time watching quarterback Sam Darnold at USC over the last two years and was left convinced that Darnold was worth taking with the third overall pick in this year’s draft.

Maccagnan’s also open to the idea of Darnold starting at quarterback to kick off the 2018 season, saying that the rookie will have every opportunity to wind up on the top line of the depth chart. Darnold said Friday at the team’s rookie minicamp that he realizes that he can’t skip any steps in the process in order to do that.

“I embrace that, but I understand every single day is a process,” Darnold said, via ESPN.com. “You have to come in here and earn respect. I’m not going to come in here and demand it. I just have to come in here, understanding the position I’m in. I’m a rookie — I understand that — but at the same time, I’m a quarterback and I have to be a leader on the field and off it as well.”

Darnold said his first priority is learning the playbook ” because I’m coming in here and I don’t know anything.” Once that changes, we’ll have a better idea of Darnold’s chances to be in the lineup come September.

You have to admit, even if you're not a Bowles fan, when he jokingly yelled about Darnold and slammed his hand on the podium, it was both funny and a good sign that he's not going to let the media force him into real hyperbole about the kid.

That was hilarious!

As much as I can't wait to see this kid play, I don't want him to start until we have an oline that gives him time like brady had from day 1. If a young qb gets blindsided reg ularly, I think the anticipation of that sticks with them for a long time. I know we upgraded center , but how much better will that make this line. I read once, how the oline is very hard to build because it takes a long time for everyone to learn what each guy is doing and takes a long time for them to really gel.

Brady's line isn't necessarily that great. They just are very well coached, and he has a quick release and great reads.

If you want him to have time like Brady, he has to learn to release it as quickly as Brady.

That can take years to happen. I don’t side with this. I don’t want them rushing him in there before he’s ready but when he is, play him. If that’s game one of his rookie season then so be it. If that’s not until his second year then that’s fine to. They can’t rush him but baby him either. When he’s ready to go, play him and let him figure it out. Whether it’s the oline that’s lagging or the offensive weapons, it’s never going to be perfect for him. A franchise QB can make up for those deficiencies and make the offense better to as perfect as it can get. That’s what franchise QBs do. They make an offense better and if Darnold is a franchise QB, he’ll make up the difference for what the offense lacks. It was the other way around with Sanchez. The team was playoff ready and they made up for his deficiencies for two straight years. This time it’s hopefully different. Hopefully Darnold can make up for what our offense lacks like true franchise QBs like Rodgers, Breez, Wilson, Luck and Brady does.

Yeah, he has a quick release but he also has many ,many times where you can count 5, 6,7 seconds him standing in the pocket. In his early years this was more so. And yes, they have the best online coach who dates past the arrival of belichick. Donde Scarrnechia. He retired a few years back and the oline immediately got worse. The next year, he was out of retirement.

During this past superbowl, they actually made a comment how Scarnechia is a huge reason for all the winning and gets no credit

I just don't want him to be Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck behind the patriots oline is Tom brady. Behind the Colts offensive, offensive line he is sitting out a season and As good as he is, he's only good enough with a bad supporting cast to lose by 30 to the patriots in the playoffs. The Colts seem to have figured this out this year with a little help from the Jets

I agree. I have no patience to wait either but I want to be the patriots minus the cheating, and without Belichick and scarnechia that will take a while

Right. There's a good chance Bridgewater wins this year's qb battle. Our luck he goes 10-6 and misses the playoffs. Then what happens the next season?

He gets so little credit for the incredible job he has done.

And while Brady can sometimes sit back there with that amount of time, often the ball is out of his hands well before. It doesn't hurt that breathing on him gets you 15. But he also is a very quick read. He doesn't have the best arm, but he is accurate and he makes great reads. That's why he checks down so often to slot receivers, TEs, or RBs out of the backfield.

Still, you beat him by hitting him. The Ravens have proved it. The Giants proved it in the SB. The Jets proved it in the playoffs. Rush him, get him out of his comfort zone, and he is done.

exactly my point. Funny thing is that you just named the 4 times that teams put pressure on him in his career pretty much and all losses. But my main point is, going back 18 years to his beginning, he never saw much pressure and that is such a huge help in becoming great. He never has had to fear the blindside hit and so he can think about only who to throw to rather than fear getting creamed. That's why, the few times that he gets hit, he flips out so much. To him it's unusual so it must be a penalty.

As for Scarnechia, it is amazing how good he must be because in a single year without him the offensive line went noticeably down hill. belichick sure new why because he brought him immediately out of retirement. the guy is pretty old. even older than brady. i think he's in his 70's so maybe he will retire again soon.

Curious to see how well Nate Solder does on the Giants this year

On our old site, i was on my usual rant about how brady is great because he has all day to throw and we had a patriot fan on there who called himself Patriot. He says to methat I'm right and how Scarnechia had been there longer than belichick. If he didn't tell me that I wouldn't know. I've seen a lot of cheatah games, up until the last 4 or 5 years where I really tired of them winning, and I have rarely ever heard scarnechia mentioned. so thanks to my old friend Patriot for pointing it out to me. I get more patriot fans agreeing with how much time brady has than I do Jet fans. years ago, i would sit and count how many seconds before he threw and then count how many yards between his receiver and the nearest defender

and besides the 15 yard penalty for looking in bradys direction I'm pretty sure there is another rule that states, " No one is aloud to defend gronkowski in a game winning drive situation"

So anyway, I just hope we can give Darnold some time to throw so as he doesn't play looking over his shoulder, because I think that's a hard fear to get rid of

If 'Teddy is Ready' week 1, expect Mac to trade him. Personally I doubt he will be but either way, I don't think he will be on team come September 1.

I’m glad he realizes this. Can’t come into an NFL locker room with that silver spoon mentality. You have to earn your respect, blend in as one of the guys and prove you belong while slowly becoming that leader that everyone wants to follow. If he proves he belongs then he shouldn’t have any issues.
