Again, I’m not saying they’re the 2008 Jets o-line. They need some eventual upgrades. But that wasn’t going to be addressed in the draft or FA (other than Long) this year. FA had virtually no Tackles worth much other than average Nate Solder, and the Center position had Richburg (who bolted for the 49ers offer), Jensen (ridiculously overpaid by the Bucs), and Long. What were we supposed to do? We had no 2nd round pick, and the best Centers and Guards were gone by the 3rd round. Besides, most teams have players earmarked on their draft boards. The Jets took Sheppard in the 3rd, as an example, because he was a guy they had targeted right around that spot. I’m almost certain Macc didn’t say “well, we could really use a Guard here, so who’s available?” Listening to Maccagnan interviews, I’m certain he doesn’t think that way. And rightly so.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. The o-line will get attention next off season.

Blindside, Look at the Jets. What has Macc done? Drafted Darnold, Williams, Adams, Maye, Lee, Jenkins and URFA Anderson in 4 years. What has Bowles done? Our Defense is okay. but we should be a whole lot better. We have neglected our OL since we drafted D'Brick and Mangold. I don't see an upgrade on the OL. Why sign an injured C/G and hope he becomes good. Other then Darnold, Macc drafted 2 players 3rd and 4th Rd who are injured, signs FA Long who is injured and hopes (HOPES) to be able to come back. Macc is a poor judge of talent and its hurting this team. He's hit on his #1's and 2 or 3 picks the rest of the way. He'll go down as the GM who drafted Darnold, but Darnold, Williams and Adams fell into his lap. He is not a good GM! That's probably why we are mediocre at best.

Part of the issue is that Macc made the decision to go for it in 2016 after a 10-6 record in his first year. I’m not going to fault Macc for thinking that way after it looked like we might have the makings of something. But then it fell apart in 2016, and a decision to rebuild was made. We’re only two years into that rebuild, and some people expect it done already.

I’m not going to defend the drafting. As has been the case for a long time with this team, we haven’t drafted many good players beyond the first round. That hasn’t been a Maccagnan problem, that’s been a Jets problem for many years. But if you’re going to rip him for the misses, it’s only fair to give him credit for the good picks and FA moves. His move up for Darnold turned out to be a great decision. Three of his four 1st rounders appear to be cornerstone players (Adams, Williams, and Darnold) and one might eventually be (Lee). He went against conventional wisdom by taking two safeties with the Adams/Maye picks, drawing the ire of fans and media alike, and now we’re all reminiscing what a great decision that was.

Maybe my “green colored glasses” are getting in the way, but I don’t think Macc’s a bad GM, and I don’t think our o-line is the dumpster fire you’re making it out to be.

I don't think Macc is a good GM and I believe our OL is close to being a dumpster fire. We are 2 years into a rebuild and except for Darnold who we have mortgaged this passed years draft for (I have no regrets on this decision). We (all past Jet Gm's) draft very poorly after the 1st Rd. Sure we hit on some of those picks not nearly as many as we should. I'd like to be optimistic on the Jets future, but its the same story every year. Rome was not built in a day and we have been building for 50 years.

I think Mac is a good GM but I believe he has neglected one major area of need. Mac has put together some very good parts to the defense. The secondary should be one of the strongest in the league with the addition of Johnson and drafting of Adams and Maye. Claiborne was a very good addition as well. The defensive line will be adequate anchored by Leo and supported by McClendon. If either of the two rookies pan out the line will be good. Yes, we still don't have an OLB who can rush the passer but I believe Mac was ready to give Ezekiel Ansah big money until the Lions tagged him. Probably the same with Demarcus Lawrence. Mac can now rely on either of those guys becoming available in '19 and the '19 draft is loaded with OLB prospects. I'm fine with what he's doing with the D and believe next year's defense should be stellar. On offense, well, Mac got his guy in Darnold and it was well worth the three picks he gave up to get him. I think the signings of Crowell and Pryor were solid and will improve the offense, despite what Brian Costello thinks.

Of course the area Mac has let this team down on is the offensive line. In four drafts he has taken one player in the fifth round or lower. That's unacceptable. The starting line may be adequate but if any of them go down (with the possible exception of Shell) the whole line will be terrible and the offense will suffer. So will our potential FQB. Every one of the backups stinks and should not be on the roster. Just like Wesley Johnson did last year, any of the backups will make the entire OL terrible. With Long and Winters coming back from injury, that's a big risk. I"m hoping Mac will get some backups on this roster later this summer even if they're not as young as the nucleus of the team.
