Well, that was quick and out of nowhere. Explains why he didn’t receive any reps today in OTA’s.

Getting a conditional 7th rounder in 2019.

Hack dealt to the Raiders for a conditional 7th

[h=1]Note: Cimini seems to have forgotten that Petty was already cut almost 3 weeks ago.

Jets trade Christian Hackenberg to Raiders for conditional draft pick[/h] Quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who never made it into a game in two seasons with the New York Jets, was traded Tuesday to the Oakland Raiders, ending an odd and disappointing tenure that leaves a wake of questions.

The Jets will receive a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft.

The move came hours after Hackenberg, speaking to reporters, made critical comments about the coaching staff. He said the last two seasons were "frustrating" because he didn't "get any information from anybody on how to fix that and how to address" mechanical flaws.

The Jets selected Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 draft (No. 51 overall), knowing he'd take time to develop. They ran out of patience, as they traded up to pick Sam Darnold third overall in last month's draft.

Hackenberg was a virtual spectator on Tuesday, receiving no practice reps.

In two seasons of inactivity, Hackenberg became a historical footnote -- the first quarterback in more than 30 years who was drafted in the first two rounds and didn't play a single snap in his first two seasons.

It happened to Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, a first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 1983, but his situation was a technicality because he opted to start his career in the USFL.

The only other quarterback since the 1970 merger who falls into that category is Gene Bradley, a second-round pick of the Bills in 1980.

General manager Mike Maccagnan, criticized for drafting Hackenberg so high, finally signed off on the decision to end the experiment.

Hackenberg served as the fourth-string quarterback in 2016, the third-stringer last season. Because of injuries to others, he was active in five of 32 games. In other words, he got a chance to wear a uniform five times, but he never actually stepped on the field.

There were ample opportunities to play him in meaningless games in 2016 and 2017, yet the coaching staff never felt comfortable the prospect of him leading the offense.

The crushing blow came in the 2017 finale, a blowout loss to the New England Patriots. Coach Todd Bowles hinted before the game that Hackenberg could see action -- the Jets had long been eliminated from playoff contention -- but he stuck with the struggling Bryce Petty for the entire game.

Hackenberg, one of the top high school recruits in his class and a three-year starter at Penn State, maintained an upbeat attitude despite the inactivity.

"I don't think 'disappointed' is the word," he said at the end of the season. "I think that's a really bad way to look at it. I just try to stay as positive as I can and keep working. It's a process. I don't get caught up in the here and now. I understand that it's a 5,000-foot view and you have to continue to look at the big picture and keep working toward the ultimate goal."

Hackenberg was given a chance last preseason to win the job, but he struggled. He completed 42 of 74 passes (57 percent) for 372 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and nine sacks -- a 68.1 passer rating.

Without Hackenberg, the Jets are down to four quarterbacks -- Darnold, Petty, incumbent Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.

Mac was able to get a draft pick that is higher than Hack should have been drafted. GENIUS!!

Good bye and good riddance. The fact he couldn't beat out McCown, Petty and Fitz for two straight years proves he shouldn't have been a second round pick in the first place. Guessing Bridgewater is looking pretty good also.

Anyone know the details of the trade?
Does conditional 7th round pick mean if he makes the roster we get a 7th or is there incentives he needs to reach?

Makes me wonder if he was traded due to his comments or how teddy looked in OTA's. For now it appears that the future is Darnold and Bridgewater.

Bridgewater looked very good today according to reports from OTA’s. He showed no effects of the knee injury. Moved around well.

But Cimini’s reporting that the Jets were fielding offers during the draft for Hackenberg. The writing was on the wall the second the Jets drafted Darnold.

The writing was on the wall the first time Hack threw a pass in practice his rookie year.

Hey, we all knew that the coaches were not pleased with his performances during practices. Even he knew it which is likely why he sought special help with his throwing. The problem was, most likely, just Mac not wanting to admit that he blew it when he drafted him. Not a bit surprised by this, except, that anyone would be willing to take him off our hands. I would be interested in the full details of that CONDITIONAL PICK trade myself. I wouldn't be surprised if that pick never materializes. I wish him well though. He's been patient and I believe he's really a good guy.

I wonder if the comments came because he knew a deal was happening.

Honestly, I don't think hac was a bad pick. He has excellent qualities for a qb. Gruden said pre draft he was a first rounder, after going through the Gruden qb camp.

I can accept hac being a bust second rounder, but the fact that he only dressed for 5 games combined with the statement that the coaching staff never worked with him, should be a giant alarm about bates. I don't take hac as a liar, and he has always been a team player making comments to the press.

You draft your future development qb in the 2nd round, and never work on him with mechanics!!!! What the heck else should bates have been doing, if not helping fix his flaws? And now bates is the guy developing darnolds mechanics?

You can argue if hac was a second rounder, or late rounder, but having mentally run the Patriots offense as an 18 year old, making adjustments at the line, having a cannon, and being accurate in college, there's no excuse for not developing him into a backup.

If hac is never a starter, that's on him, but not even sniffing the field, is an indictment of the jets coaching.

He stated what we all knew or suspected. This CS is clueless when it comes to developing young QBs. Glad we got something for him...what a waste of a pick.

Its the same wonderful feeling of relief you get when that laxative you've been taking for almost a week finally works.

But even better - it means that Teddy looks ok.

that is now my worry also
was Hackenberg such a hopeless cause or are the CS qb buffoons.
Although Fitzpatrick and McCown both had their career years here

Neither, trade talks we're going on with the Raiders before today's OTAs.

I don’t think the issue was coaching regarding Hackenberg. Most draft experts were shocked the Jets reached on Hack in the 2nd round. The scouting reports all specifically mentioned his mechanics as a big red flag. I believe Macc thought a few years learning the system would eventually pay off for him. But when the opportunity to get a blue chip prospect like Darnold came along, Macc righty decided to move on from a project like Hack to a more “sure thing” player like Darnold.

Just my theory. I could be wrong.
