like claiborne said, the back end has some real talent, including himself, when he's healthy enough to play..
plenty of high round draft picks on the defensive side of the ball, certainly in comparison to the offensive side..
but we still don't have an edge rusher on the roster yet..
& i still don't have any faith in bowles/rogers coaching up this unit into a top 10 defense without one..
we don't have long to wait to find out one way or the other though..

If the D falters, that's on Mac more so than Bowles. As you said,there is no threat at OLB on the roster, the biggest component to the 3-4 D. Getting into the middle of the league will be an accomplishment with the current roster on the D.
that's probably fair to say.. but bowles/rogers are overdue for "accomplishment," in my book anyway..
the margin of difference between most NFL teams is VERY small - a significant injury or rash of injuries, OR the stepping up to elite playing status by a QB or a few others at multiple positions can instantaneously alter a predicted 5-11 or 6-10 team to an 11-5 or 10-6 playoff bound team. This type of team transformation or regression occurs every season.
With the Jets, the great unknown is at QB - but - if Darnold(or even Bridgewater)significantly exceeds present expectations(without meaningful team injury issues) - a sharp and immediate team turn around is not only possible, but likely.

The team needs a pass rush. It might not come in the form of an edge rusher. It might not have to. But pressure on the QB, especially in a division with Brady, is essential.
Otherwise, though, the team is solid on defense. I hope that flaw is not its Achilles' heel.
sadly, it hasn't come in that form since john abraham..
williams going from a good player, to a playmaker would help.. a lot..
if it doesn't come this season, i'm done waiting for it..

And until I see top noncth QB play from one of these guys ( and you can leave McCown out of the equation ) this team isn't going anywhere
It's a legit point. I was hoping a guy like Donahue or Mauldin would be it, but neither have stepped up to that role.
It's going to have to come in a big FA signing or more likely with a first round pick.our guys are good rotational players but are not going to get consistent pressure from the outside.
Hopefully the interior can generate some pressure , with the improved secondary, that could be enough.
I won't disagree with that.
