This is why Bowles will not give up on Cannon returning punts despite a disastrous debut at the position. First because Cannon is a lock to make the team as the third RB and primary Kickoff returner (which he did in college), but if he can improve as a punt returner (which he did not do in college) he has the speed to be a HR threat at the position, as he does at K.O. returner, but more importantly, the Jets would be forced to carry seven WR's because Andre Roberts is the only one who returns punts, or carry Roberts at the expense of carrying McBride or Johnson. They don't want to carry more than six, so they'll probably lose McBride or Johnson if they have to keep Roberts to return punts.
Thats why Bowles did not sound like he was ready to give up on Cannon as a punt returner in his post game presser, and I agree that you shouldn't give up on the kid after one preseason game and doing something that is entirely new to him. Also, from everything I've read, this kid routinely stays after practice to work on fielding punts. IOW's he's a hard worker and I'm sure that will continue this week and beyond, until he gets this right, or not, in which case the Jets will have no choice but to carry Roberts and probably at the expense of McBride or Johnson, and I believe they want to keep the both of them, though they probably can't if they have to keep Roberts to return punts.
So contrary to what most people are probably thinking, I don't think you've seen the last of Cannon getting a chance to improve as a punt returner. The experiment might end if he continues to muff punts in these preseason games and practices, but I don't think the experiment ended tonite. JMO.
