Something to consider after the signing of Bell:
the Jets had one of the worst run-blocking units in the league last year, allowing their rushers to be stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage a league-high 26 percent of the time. Jets running backs also saw 39 percent of runs on third or fourth down, of two yards or less to go, fail to achieve a first down or touchdown; the league-average fail rate was 34 percent.

The new guard is a start.
But more is needed.

Where are these better o-linemen coming from? The first round? Nope. FA? Who’s out there right now?

Sitton might be an option if they’re done with Winters. But Beachum and Shell are the tackles, and apparently the team likes Harrison after a solid audition replacing Long.

I understand the run blocking sucked last year. (Wonder how much of that had to do with changing the scheme?) But pointing out problems doesn’t mean anything without viable solutions. And there aren’t many I see.

The only option I see is trading down to acquire more picks. That would take us out of the Bosa/Allen sweepstakes.

If the Jets trade #3 for two first round draft picks and land something like....OL Jonah Williams and CB Byron Murphy, then yes, a trade down is worth it. Two solid prospects filling a couple of needs.

Otherwise, it’s stay at 3 and take BPA.

I think Osemele improves the left side of the line. He will help Harrison if that is our option at C. Beachum was the LT for part of Bell's career and he actually averaged 5.7ypc to Beachum's side. So there is a familiarity there. And Beachum didn't have a horrible year last year. I think having Pollack as OL coach will make a difference with the guys we have. Mac really has dropped the ball over the last 4 years with the OL, but it should be better with Osemele and Pollack. I'm trying to stay positive about what Osemele, Pollack and Bell will do for the OL as a whole, but Mac has to draft a couple OL this year.

I'm looking more at that LT who had a great combine and a Center. No gripes with Williams and Murphy. They fill a need.

We had an average offensive line at best last year. We were ranked 25 by PFF. We've added Osemele and a new OL coach but does anyone feel confident in this group. If we trade down we need to invest two of our first four picks to improve this unit. Just don't understand why Mac always seems to be modestly addressing the OL need when it's purpose now is to protect our most valuable asset. If we stay put with the 3rd pick than one of our third rounders need to be an OL, preferably a center.

Since Mike Maccagnan has been hired as GM, he has brought in the following offensive linemen: Kelvum Beachum, James Carpenter, Jonathan Harrison, Brandon Shell, Kelechi Osemele, and Spencer Long. You stated he’s only “modestly addressed” the o-line. That’s six o-line acquisitions via the draft, trade, and FA.

Now you can argue with the results, especially the run blocking last year. But Beachum was the best available LT at the time Macc signed him, Carpenter was also a top rated Guard when we got him, and the Osemele trade was vintage theft by Macc. (Swapping 5th and 6th rounders? Really, for a 29 year old, 2X pro bowler?)

This isn’t to suggest I’m happy with the current line. Still think an upgrade at Center is needed, and Beachum’s eventual replacement needs to be here by next season. But previous talk of Macc’s “ignoring the o-line” isn’t factual. He’s been here since 2015 and addressed a lot of other areas with a higher priority, but he hasn’t ignored the o-line.

Got to agree here and center is a concern as is left tackle. As a short term replacement and upgrade I heard that the Jets are trying to work a trade for John Sullivan. Not sure about this but read it in a couple different places. He's 33 I believe, played every game last season, weighs in at 310 to 315 and is a good player. Left tackle will have to come from the draft it appears but maybe we'll be lucky enough to get a star. You never know.

Mac is just not a consistent evaluator. Didn’t say he sucked so all the Mac lovers can settle down. He is just not consistent. If he drafts in top 6 he is pretty good. Anything after that is probably 20% at best. He makes good trades, but there is no need to evaluate the talent like with drafting. We need to replace him with someone that can be more consistent.

Didn't he also bring in this guy?

Personally, I think Mac gets way too much credit in the decision making process. Sure, he probably has the final say on who the Jets should bring in via FA and the Draft , but I would think he relies heavily on the scouting staff , and also his coaches regarding team needs , talent evaluation etc. Lets take into example Darron Lee. Was the idea to draft him Mac's , or was it Todd Bowles' because he wanted similar players to match up with the type personnel he had in Arizona?

It’s an interesting point. Most leaders aren’t dictators. They listen to their right hand men. At least, they should.

You raise a good point about Mac's success, or lack thereof in previous drafts. There has to be 100% synergy between coach and GM in acquiring players to fit systems, lockerroom, etc. Word has it that Bowles and Mac were at odds with each other, hence the spotty at best draft record. So there's the chicken and egg argument, that I'm hoping that Chris Johnson has the answer to. Since he fired TB, he has to believe that Mac got him the players he wanted and still failed.

Someone to watch in the jets front office - Brian Heimerdinger. Apparently he is a young, highly regarded personnel guy who has become very influential in the Jets draft process. Heard that much of last year's draft was heavily influenced by him.
