Nick Saban: Jets DL Quinnen Williams Is ‘Perfect’ for New NFL

The SEC has been the college-NFL pipeline for years as the conference in 2019 was the draft’s top talent provider for the 13th time and set a record with 64 selections.

While the league reaps the fruit of the SEC’s labor, head coach Nick Saban and Alabama football rule the jungle. Ten Crimson Tide players were selected in last week’s draft, the most of any school. They also became the first program to have the most players selected in three consecutive drafts.

The first of those 10 ‘Bama players that were selected was Jets DL Quinnen Williams at No. 3 overall. The 21-year-old Williams became the first Crimson Tide player since Trent Richardson in 2012 to be chosen in the top three. So, what separates Williams from past first-rounders?

“I think his initial quickness and his ability to use his hands, play with leverage, get off blocks quickly,” Saban told NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano. “He’s athletic, so he’s a really good pass rusher. He’s not a gigantic, huge, overpowering guy, but the rest of it is perfect for this day and age of football. I go back to the initial quickness and the use of his hands. This guy is a really smart, instinctive player. I think sometimes people overlook how that impacts someone’s production and his production here was fabulous.”

When you see him in a suit at the Draft, he doesn’t look athletic. But when you watch him on film, he looks like a man among little boys. The way he pushes people over, or simply goes around them is amazing. I’m so glad we took him. Greg Williams had to be ecstatic.

I had to laugh when I read/heard after the draft that Gregg Williams was disappointed that the Jets didn't draft his guy, Ed Oliver. Can't remember where I saw it, or heard the comment, but it surprised me after watching QW's tape.

That whole argument they're making doesn't even make sense. If they chose an offensive guy over Oliver, maybe. But if they're choosing defense, the guy who is going to have the say on which guy is Gregg Williams.

I don't watch college, but I watched a little bit about the top 3 before the draft and I was most excited about this guy. No one really probably wanted another d lineman but this kid looked too good to pass up

I watch college football as much as anyone, I love it, and I think I saw every snap Alabama played in 2018.

That said, Quinnen Williams was one of the most dominant college football players I have ever seen in 2018, and that goes back a long way.

I'm no different than most college football observers. I lean heavily towards offensive players for the Heisman Trophy. For me a defensive player really has to break the mold to get my vote for the Heisman if I had one. For instance, I would NOT have voted for Charles Woodson. Great player in college, but not a transcendent talent and that's what you have to be to get my vote for the Heisman as a defensive player. Last year, without hesitation, Quinnen Williams would have received my vote. This kid was an absolute wrecking machine for Alabama last year.

Well ,we sure as neck could use so.edging to get excited about with this team. Since we have Gastineau mentioned in another thread(sadly because he is in a bad way), I remember the sack exchange days where you were just waiting to count the sacks every game. Sure would be great to have so.edging like that again.

If this j
Kid is as good as you say, he's gonna improve our other Williams and maybe even improve our outside rush.

I just hope we don't end up with another year where the defense starts out great but then gives up because no matter how few points they give up, our offense still can't score enough to win. That's my fear

If that happens in YEAR TWO for Sam, it will be a painful thing to admit, exceedingly painful, but it will mean he is NOT the franchise QB we anticipated.

Sam has to take a big leap this year and make sure that does NOT happen to the defense. Make sure they are NOT demoralized because we can't score.

If Sam is running for his life like last year, it won't all be his fault. Hopefully this line somehow gels and quick. No sophomore slump worries for Sam?

I will continue to say it. The Jets organization is the only thing that can make Darnold not succeed.

Sam wasn’t running for his life. That’s a myth.

Pretty sure you're the only one who see 's it that way. what was he running for, exercise? You think Brady gets pressured and you think Sam doesnt? Huh? I have some swampland in Afghanistan for sale for a good price. Pm me for a special price I have for people with wild imaginations

Actually, I watch every minute of every game. And the amount of scrambling he did seemed about on par with most QB’s.

But continue on with the “running for his life” narrative.

how many times have you seen brady scramble? I can't remember anyone here but you thinking that Sam is not in trouble with this offensive last year and everyone is again worried this year. Maybe you are so worried for Sam that you have your eyes closed when he's on the field and that's why you miss him running for his life. that was a good one, did I get your g o a t?

Maybe some others watch the games in slow motion

I thought you might be right about the slow motion thing so I rewatched some games from.last year in slow motion and you know what? Sam still looked like he was running for his life . only slower. Kind of reminded me of Tom Brady the couple times he was pressured in the Giants Superbowl, running really, really slowly for his life
