Sounds like the Eagles and Browns can and will block these guys from interviewing. With Gase having fired the GM and now taking the role on, it seems likely that whoever they hire will be GM in name only. I heard them discussing it on Sirius NFL Radio over several shows, consensus was the Jets will have to do an amazing job convincing the league that the hire will have final say on personnel, which is the only way this amounts to a promotion for either guy. Doesn't seem like the Jets have the right guy in their ownership or front office, in any capacity, to do an amazing job.

A criticism of this team is the power structure. Who reports to the owner? Both the GM and the coach. So the GM is basically at the same level as the coach, and that’s not a normal chain of command.

can another team block someone who is not a GM from interviewing/taking the job? seems to me, like a head coach, that for a promotion you can't block people.

on a different note, i just saw that scott pioli just left his job with the atlanta front office (he was an assistant to their GM). i wonder if he would cross lord belichick and return to the jets

What they were saying was that unless the responsibility is that of a GM, final personnel approval (or at least above that of the coach) the league won't consider it a promotion.

and Pioli is Parcells son in law. wonder if he would take on belichick. Don't think he has been all that great since leaving belichick though

Just heard the same concern from Mark Domenik - if he doesn't have final say on the 53, it's not a promotion.

So he needs final say. He should have it as GM. has anyone said he won't or are we speculating?

It's any odys guess but when a coach is involved in firing/hiring the GM they usually (always?) wind up as the final authority on the 53.

My money is on Douglas as their first choice, providing that the abnormal power structure that Brick points out doesn't turn him off before they can even make an offer.

Douglas is supposedly close to Gase from previous coaching stints. So you can probably assume that they’d coexist well. And his association with Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore is definitely a big deal. Douglas is a popular guy right now, and he’s expected to get multiple opportunities if he waits this out until next year.

The question is, how quickly will this fan base turn on him? I’m betting it’ll be under three years.

Patience is something Jets fans have long been short on. They expect perfection right from the get-go and no mistakes thereafter. As unrealistic as that is I do understand what drives their motivation. We've been the clowns, and butt of football jokes, in the NFL for so long that it's just taking a toll. Even though we all know that this team is still rebuilding we just can't help but to want it all now. Even with these recent additions and changes in staff and culture they won't stop to consider that it takes awhile of working together for a bunch of players, no matter how skilled, to become a team. I'm convinced that the Jets will have a significantly better season this year but I also expect that there will be some growing pains. I can only hope that whoever they bring in as GM will be given a fair chance to accomplish the completion of the rebuild without the usual off with his head and fire him today mentality that surrounds the fan base as of late. I wasn't thrilled with Mac's draft this time but his free agency moves were not bad at all. It is rumored that he pretty much shut Gase out of the draft process which if true was not a smart thing to do in my opinion but not being privy to what really went on in the draft room I am reluctant to make a judgement call. I do have a problem with the timing of the firing but what do I know. When all is said and done I guess I'm optimistic that the improvements made this off season will have us fielding a team we can be proud of which in turn will hopfuly mellow out the fan base.

I can tell you three losing seasons should not be tolerated. Thats just stupid.
