New C for the Jets, Ryan Kalil

The Jets signed Ryan Kalil. He had just retired this past offseason.

Now trade a 2 to the Redskins for 7 time Pro Bowler, the Silverback, LT Trent Williams, and the Jets have a dominant O-line just like that.

This is so huge. Though I usually prefer going younger, having a veteran C to help both Darnold and the OL is massive. Just a great big upgrade.

He has had some injuries in the past, but last year, he played every game. The OL took a big step forward.

If the team traded for Trent Williams, what of Beachum? He has been a better LT than he gets credit for.

Then we will have the oldest OL. Khalil is past his prime, yet somehow I still like it. He can help Darnold grow and Harrison can learn from him as well.

My second thought is Joe Douglas just did more for the Jets OL than Macc did in 5 years.

I just noticed that Kalil and I have something in common. We are both descended from some of the early Dutch founders of New York.

That's the thing. I normally prefer younger signings. But in this case, I really see the value in a veteran at C.

Having played C in college, I know how important that chemistry can be, and how important a C can be to both the rest of the OL and to his QB.

I would move him to RT and Shell to RG, but it might take Beachum and a 2 to get the Silverback from the Redskins.

BTW Beachum has played some RT and I believe Shell played some OG in college as well.

But honestly, if we can add the Silverback ... Beachum, Shell and Winters are afterthoughts ... let them compete and figure out who plays where.

Yep, and I always say barring injuries OL's tend to have a longer shelf life than most players.

Andrew Whitworth is 37 and still considered one of the best LT's in the league, it seemed like Jumbo Elliott played forever, and the list is endless.

Some can, if they stay healthy. His health has been some ups, some downs. Most recently, though, last season, he was healthy. That's probably the best barometer.

And the Silverback is only 31, coming off his seventh of 7 consecutive Pro Bowls. 31 is almost like still being in your prime for an OT.

I hope to God Joe Douglas finishes the job and makes that deal for Williams ... 2nd RD Pick ... lets do this and FINALLY challenge the Pats.

With Darnold going into year 2 and Brady turning 42, I really believe we can challenge them if we add the Silverback.

nice signing.

you can't assume you are getting the pro bowl-caliber player, and there is concern about how much he has left if he's already thought about retirement, but it still is a nice addition/upgrade to a position that had a major question mark

I could be wrong, but ...

Before Kalil announced his retirement, which came as a big surprise, most boards listed him as the #1 UFA Center.

Just call it an early Chritmas Present from our new GM guys. It's a good contract as well..........one year a little over 8 mil. Harrison will be in the wings, hopefully learning from him, in case of injury.

kalil announced in january 2018 that he would be retiring after the 2018 season. and he formally announced his retirement on december 31, 2018, a day after their final game. so i'm not sure he ever was on any list of possible free agents, unless by mistake.

based on his age/injury history, i'm not sure he would have been deemed to top FA although he definitely has the best resume

There were reports that Gase wanted Paradis, and Macc didn’t push as hard for him because he was focusing so much on LeVeon making his decision. It’s pretty clear that Gase and Douglas weren’t as confident in Jonatthan Harrison. It’s not a position you want to screw around with.

Kalil could be a major addition to this o-line if he’s right physically. Worth the risk, for sure.
