Another OL addition, former Ravens guard Alex Lewis

Evidently, before the Ravens waived him, the Jets swung a deal for Alex Lewis. He's 27, has started 10 games last year before getting injured, and had started back in 2016.

It's been a whirlwind few days for Lewis. He's due $2 million this year. He passed his physical, and then found out the Ravens were going to waive him. So he posted his thanks to Baltimore, all that stuff.

Well, the Jets swooped in before the Ravens filed the paperwork, offered a conditional seventh rounder, and got him.

I like it Douglas. Go get it, get this Jets team right!

That tells you what having an aggressive GM can do. He knew the Jets would not be first in line for his services, so swing the conditional seventh and land him, jumping those ahead of them on the waiver wire.

Looks like a quality player, considering he was a starter. JD adding some beef to the o-line. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Brian Winters. KO is obviously a starter, but who plays the other starting guard position?

Just read some background on Lewis on a Ravens site.

He’s a 2016 4th round pick who has played well when he hasn’t been injured. Sounds like the team was upset that he didn’t give them a status report on his injury. He’s supposedly close to 100% now.

The Ravens like 2-3 other players competing for the LG spot, and saved 2 million in cap space by letting him go.

jets would have been 3rd on waivers. but for the very modest price of a conditional 7th, i got no problem making that deal to ensure the jets got him. douglas is known as an o-line guru from a scouting perspective, and his roots are from baltimore (although he left the ravens before they drafted lewis), so i certainly trust his judgment here

Getting a former starter for a 7th rounder is a good move. Even if he's a backup, we have no depth on the o-line, so this is a smart pickup. This creates competition on the o-line for Winters, and he's there is something happens to Osemele. Another good move.

Do we finally have a GM that is on the same page as the coaching staff, knows how to evaluate talent, is proactive, and knows how to build a championship roster?

Just like Kalil, I really like this move as well. If Lewis can stay healthy, he'll be a solid piece in the OL.

I thought they were third on the list, but I wasn't positive. They could have taken their chances, but for a conditional 7th, it's worth not taking any risk at all if you really want him.

i just assumed the off-season waiver list is the same as the original draft order (excluding trades). jets picked 3rd, hence i assumed they are 3rd on any waiver claim

I think you're right. And the thought crossed my mind, as well, but I figured the front office just wanted to ensure they got him. If anything, it tells me the team is relatively high on him.

Well he has 4 years of OL neglect to make up for.
yeah, the ass backward andrew luck model for protecting a young franchise QB has thankfully left the building with maccagan & coach bowles..

how douglas goes about his business in zeroing on how to fill huge needs, with limited resources is really impressive..

BTW Winters has a right to be nervous and he would be well advised to raise his game to another level.

WHEN HEALTHY, Alex Lewis has probably started as many or more games than Winters.

Whether or not he's better than Winters, I have no idea, haven't seen nearly enough of him, but it's not like we brought in a career backup or an old man.

Jets Trade for Guard Alex Lewis and Claim CB Alex Brown

Both of these guys might possibly wind up as starters in my humble, ( ever so humble ), opinion. Brown could wind up being our #2 guy with Johnson and Lewis is a pretty good guard. Mod might want to merge this tread with the one sackexchange started earlier that I didn't see until just now.

I suspect with JD's Philadelphia knowledge of the current Eagles' roster and Chad Alexander's (director of pro personnel - ex Ravens') knowledge of Ravens, we'll see a lot of picking off of players from those two rosters.

It is my understanding from watching a Ravens fan's youtube report, Alexander can play any of the offensive line positions , making him a valuable asset as a backup. I believe , that's what Joe Douglas had in mind when he dealt for him.

He's a great depth signing. Can be used as a spot starter at LG and in an emergency LT.
The Ravens tried him on the right side in camp and it was unsuccessful.
He has some maturity and off field issues. The Ravens weren't letting him walk away for no reason, to he's had issues going back to his college days.
The Ravens have 3 players on the roster who can play LG but none are really starting caliber.
A conditional 7th for needed depth is a good deal.
