The Jets offense has received the brunt of the criticism for Monday night’s disaster against the Patriots, but cornerback Trumaine Johnson highlighted the issues on the other side of the ball.

After earning his starting job back with strong practice play, Johnson struggled mightily against New England’s wide receivers. Most discouraging was Philip Dorsett smoking Johnson for a 26-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the first quarter.

Johnson, who signed a five-year, $72 million deal with the Jets in 2018, was also flagged for a pass interference penalty in the 33-0 loss.

Former Jets linebacker Bart Scott absolutely ripped Johnson on SNY’s postgame show afterward.

“Trumaine Johnson, man, listen, this is like, bro, you stealing,” the SNY and WFAN analyst said. “…You on the field stealing, bro. Half your check should be deducted and given back to a charity, man, because I don’t know what the hell you doing. You’re not competing.

“That’s why I can respect Darryl Roberts on the other side, because if he’s going to get beat, at least he’s trying. The one that went over the top, he didn’t compete at the line of scrimmage. Then, it looked like he was jogging and striding when he got there and caught up. He didn’t because he was on top, if you’re on top, stay on top. That’s simple, that takes no talent. If you’re deep, stay deep.”

Johnson did come away from the loss with his first interception of the season, but it was Leonard Williams who hit Brady as he was throwing the pass that wobbled right into Johnson’s hands. The interception didn’t factor into Scott’s evaluation of the 29-year-old cornerback.

“How can you be 10 yards off the ball, a guy runs past you, you don’t compete at the line of scrimmage, jam him or anything?” Scott said. “Don’t stay on top and he gets behind you, and you get caught behind and he catches the ball to the basket. That’s just a lack of discipline, it’s a lack of competition and it’s a lack of attention to detail.”

There is clearly a reason why Johnson was benched.

That being said, I'm sick and tired of watching Roberts being picked on! He doesn't belong on the outside, he is a slot DB at best.

Saw Bart say this last night. Had both my wife and I in hysterics. He's been very irreverent and entertaining this year.

Funny....I said that seeing his NON EFFORT in his first Jet season allowing practice squad player just brought up to have 4 yard cushion and zero effort to tackle to stop any TD. I think the entire NFL and MLB needs to go to pay by play. Meaning year by year and incentives to reach money signed on contract. We seen to many Players gets a big payday and give no effort, fake injuries and dont play hard until last year of their Contract in hope of suckering another team like Jets to sign him to big money. Its disgraceful to see these Players sign to this kind of money to cheat us hard working fans who will never see that kind of money our entire lives when we work harder doing dangerous Jobs more than any Pro Athlete. BTW WE are paying Players Money. Yeah the owner gives the check but we as fans dont go,buy,or pay, or watch any of the Teams games there would be no big money to cheat team out of. I wish the NFL would kick out players for life scamming millions like Johnson, Wilkerson, Revis has done. Still they got 72 million and wouldnt care anyways. No morals or pride in doing their job at all. Just a bunch of scammers low lifes being rewarded for cheating money from teams and fans.

Day 1 Prospect

It seems like the Jets are snakebitten each time they've rewarded large contacts - the Revis contract when he was just a shell of himself, the Wilkerson contact, and the TJ contract. I agree - if you play like the best player in the league, you should get top pay at the end of the year. Then if you hit a rut in subsequent years the pay should decline proportionally to the performance. The Pats are the gold standard for how to handle contracts - their players are plug and play. If you took a superstar in the Pats system and stuck him on the Jets, he would become a dog. If you took a Jet e.g. Anderson and shipped him to the Pats, he would become the next Moss. Once you're heading for a big payday, the Pats trade you for low cost draft assets and start over again. They've done this over and over AND very successfully.
