Giving this a lot of thought - Gase Status

We are now almost halfway through Gase's first year. Here's what I've seen so far:

1. Offense has been inept for most of the season - poor o-line play, no adjustments to defensive schemes, receivers running lazy routes, etc. More alarming was Darnold's play last week with poor mechanics and getting his head spun around half the time by what he was seeing out there. It's probably a one time thing, but it needs to be watched. Most alarming is this offensive looks unimaginative. The Dallas game was great, and the team played fantastic. Loved the aggressiveness in the play calling. Every other game, awful. Granted, he had Luke Falk, but this is pro football. So the offensive guru has been anything but that.

2. Defense - can't really blame them. They are tough against the run, down Mosley for 3 games and been on the field the whole game almost every game. Trumaine Johnson needs to go back to the bench, he's awful. But Williams has done a solid job in my opinion game planning and get his players to play 60 minutes under difficult circumstances. Jamal Adams should be headed to his second Pro Bowl, he's been fantastic.

3. Special Teams - a disaster earlier in the year, but has stabilized.

Here's the reality of the situation - Christopher Johnson hired Gase. Douglas came here because of Gase, and so did Williams. But, failure is failure no matter how you carve it. This was an 8-8, 9-7 team if they held on at the beginning of the season. Now, the season is over. The only thing that remains is Darnold's development. He's gonna be a great QB. He has All-Pro talent, great work ethic and leadership skills. He'll get there if Gase doesn't screw him up with this nightmare of an offense and o-line play. I think it's unlikely he gets fired after this year, but I would support it. I never wanted him in the first place. But Darnold gets a big say. If he wants to stay with Gase because he believes that they can make this offense great with more talent, that matters. Douglas needs to figure this out and fast. We need draft picks, and we need smart decision making. Douglas by all accounts will be a great GM. In my opinion, the clock on Gase started ticking in the 1st Quarter against the Patriots. Either he completely turns this season around, or his job should be in serious, serious jeopardy. And the Jets should go pull from the Eagles, the Saints, the Cowboys, or Chiefs to find their guy. That's my opinion. Thoughts?

I never like to jump on the "fire the coach" bandwagon too soon, but, I don't know about crazy eyes. He really seems lost. I know we were on our third QB and whatnot, but, we're dead last in just about every offensive category.

SD performance on Monday night was pathetic, but, where was the help? Everyone who watched could tell Sam was overmatched and still, nothing was done to protect him. I'd give crazy eyes the rest of the season to see if the O and Sam develop, but, if they don't, he should be one and done.

13-24 that is AG record for the last few years including Miami. Do you really need see anymore? If that isn't enough then think about how many Jets stood around the strip of SAM fumble and didn't even try to recover it! That tells me there is a serious disconnect between AG and his players.... if they lost this weekend buckle up cause its going to get ugly! Personally, he should be fired because I see the team NOT getting better.. maybe regressing form Game 1.

Ok guys. This is the Jets. You can't look at what makes football sense. You have to look at Jets history and how things work here. Yes that sounds crazy, but it has worked that way for so long that you have to see it this way.

Let's look at the one time we were good since Namath. When Parcells and Belichick were here. We dealt with injuries. When Vinny went down, it took a few games but we finally got Ray Lucas going and just missed the playoffs. When the first half went badly, we made adjustments at halftime and things were fixed. Parcells brought in a few hand picked players with the right strengths, abilities, and attitudes

At any other time in my life we have generally been dysfunctional. Right now we are downright inept. Kotite inept. Unwatchable inept. Yes we beat Dallas. All that does is prove that we have enough talent to win games. We just don't have smart enough coaches to get the most out of these guys. To get them motivated. To make them believe in the system

Other teams deal with injuries. Cheetahs lost brady a few times. Their record without him with no name backups? 14-6. 14 and freaking 6! And Brady is why they win? BULLSHIT!

The Saints lost Drew Brees. Drew freaking Brees. What's their record so far? One loss right. I believe it was the game whie he got hurt too. Who's the backup up qb? Teddy Bridgewater. Who have him to the Saints?

Good teams with good coaching adjust to bad things and win anyway

The Jets are hapless. Gase is clueless. No adjustments at all. Not utilizing players not changing things up. Wtf?

Now. When the schedule came out, I've said this a million times. If we don't find a way to beat either buffalo or Cleveland we are going 0-6 and Gase is losing the locker room. Well, we didn't beat Buffalo or Cleveland and we're going 1-6 and God knows after that. But we know. We will win enough to not get a top 3 pick. Shit, we almost have to win some games since we now play plenty of teams that are almost as hapless as is

Darnold. I also said this a zillion times. If you put the kid behind last year's offensive line he will be ruined. Well, shit. He's now behind a line that's worse than last year and he's freaking ruined. You saw it this week.

We all know what's happening here. We've seen it plenty of times. Darnold is ruined. Check USC quarterback s always suck. Especially those with little college playing experience. I like the kid, but he's ruined and if you don't believe it yet, well the offensive line isn't going to change in the next 10 games, so he sure as he'll will be ruined by seasons end.

Gase? Gase is kotite with googly eyes. He is done also

Find a coach who's willing to change and adapt when his game plan sputters. Build a freaking offensive line and put a freaking 6th round pick quarterback behind it and go out and win some Superbowl s. I've been watching this system work for the past 20 years. Hasn't anyone else? Asking you Woody and Chris?

And oh yeah. WE SUCK!!!!!!!

You came into this season far more optimistic than I. Some of the reasons I thought that the Jets would go 7-9 at best:

1) A new coaching staff implementing a whole new offense and defense. There was going to be growing pains no matter what. Given the Jets horrendous schedule to start the season I didn't have a lot of confidence.
2) Darnold has looked very promising at times but has yet to prove he is a starting caliber NFL QB. Everyone that predicted a winning season would stipulate. "IF Darnold continues to improve."
3) The CB position looked very shaky With T. Johnson being another "if". Even though he showed NOTHING to inspire confidence last season .
4) Starting the season without a true number one receiver. Living in the Dallas area I saw how the Cowboys struggled before getting Cooper last season. Once they got him the entire offense opened up. Imagine how much better Robbie could be if the Jets had a receiver that could keep the other teams best CB off his back. Lets face it Robbie's ceiling is as a good number 2 receiver.
5) TE another if as in, "if they can find another TE to hold the fort until Herndon returns from suspension and if he plays as well as last season. Hell, it's been so long since I've seen him I forgot his name for minute there!
6) The overall lack of depth on this team, Curse you Macagnan!

I have been following the NFL for fifty years and let tell you this; a bunch of "Ifs" do not add up to a winning season.

Me too. Excellent post and thoughts. And like you, I was not at all optimistic about this season. I figured we go 5-11 or 6-10. (My wife--ever the realist--was at 0-16. lol) Watching/reading pre-season media fluff pieces which had us magically improving last years cluster f*ck had me shaking my head. Biggest issues for me were Gase (who I don't like as a HC) and Darnold (who has still not proven he's a franchise QB).

maybe this was the plan all along we get a top 3 pick to get Alabama's Jerry Jeudy a true number 1 receiver who will be only 21 years old next season as a rookie... figure in we keep Berrios, V. Smith, Josh Malone and pick up another young talent via draft or trade... I don't see us keeping Enunwa, DT, Bellamy... Still undetermined if Crowder sticks around could be traded... Still unsure they will have RA on the roster, might be traded by next week and if he is won't be a top offered contract...

there has to be some kind of thought in the front office to the type of bullshit that this coaching staff is trotting out there each week... How can you beat a formidable Cowboys team but lose to all these other teams in a big way... Regardless who is under center the coaching staff should have some game plan to accentuate the talent... especially a so called offensive guru has been put in check since his stint in Miami...

have to also believe, the front office and Gase have Gregg Williams handcuffed in what he is allowed to get out of these defensive players... we have seen flashes of what this team could do, but the consistency of it all seems fishy to me and I am the fish guy...

just to put this on blast we still have a backup QB named Fales (Fails) why not... we still have a kicker in Ficken (Fuck me)... we had Gases' Falk (Fuck) for however short of a time giving him praises on how well adapt he was with Gase's playbook, but he could not execute it for shit...
Still wondering if the guy who knew the playbook like the back of his hand couldn't execute it how the hell do you think the rest team feels, they look like they are fucking lost... the only person who doesn't give a shit about the playbook is Le'Veon Bell because his style doesn't need a game plan he just dances until a hole opens and he darts through...

like everyone else Frank Pollack and established offensive line coach looks like he is dumb founded because he can coach up a bunch of door nail group of guys into a basic zone blocking scheme... maybe they should have three blocking options, one for pass, one for run and one for run/pass option, even then they will fuck it up...

frustration aside this team needs to be gutted, even tho we already are...

What your seeing out of the coaching staff is exactly what they typically produce. Gase had 2 awful years in Miami, 1 decent year before running off ant decent talent. His offense by design has no protection, he's said as much and Sam doubled down on it in his post game presser after NE. In Gase's O, it's up to the QB to get the ball out faster than the free runners..... Why do you think his QBs were always injured in Miami... It's a great system for a 20 year vet HOF QB.
Not so much for a very raw kid with nearly no experience playing the position. Even Bates was smart enough to give him extra protection.
Williams plays a very agressive D. It always gives up big plays and we don't have the personal to recover most times. His D's have been league avg when not loaded with talent, and have gotten worse in recent years.
Had Dallas not lost both starting tackles, and their top 2 recievers, we would have been blown out week 6 too. Barely held on to win. Thanks to Adams!!!
We have a HC/OC who has not spoken to the DC in weeks.
Our GM was hired by the H.C., both report to C.J.
Douglas is an unknown, he's a former scout, so was Mac.
Some fans credit him with the Eagles draft success, the Eagles are the only team to have under performed Mac the last 3 seasons. Slightly ahead of him in the 4 years he was here but Douglas was still in Chicago for the 2016 draft, didn't join the Eagles until late June.
Let's hope he turns out to be great in the draft because we need several solid drafts in a row .
Going forward this season, we play the worst teams in the league, there's bound to be several wins, 5-6 should be minimum.
But that will lead to false hope. Gase is the right guy, Darnold is going to lead us to multiple VLTs. The evaluations must be done on a game by game basis against level of competition.
I fear were in for more Gase , another season or two at least. Does it ruin Darnold, is he physically or mentally broken by then?

The D man could still be great but we have to know for sure. He was worse then poor last week. We just hope Campbell does not make soup out of him during this next game

Cheater, I can't disagree with most of your points. I'm not at all convinced that Darnold is ruined - he's far more talented than Sanchez or Marinovich or Kessler, or Barkley or any other USC QB to come out in the last 30 years. It's not even close. We've seen more than enough at this point to know the kid can play, and become an excellent NFL QB. But he needs more help to your point. If the o-line can't block anyone, Joe Montana couldn't win. So that is priority #1.

And I'm not going to kill Douglas - no way. He's been on the job for a few months. Look what they guy inherited. The consensus around the league is that this guy is the real deal. We'll know in a few years, but I have confidence with his coming from the Eagles. They are one of the most talented and well-built teams in the league.

As for the rest, I think you're on point. I've been watching this for 46 years - so I get it believe me. I'm as done with this crap as anyone.

One year, this is going to go our way...it might be next year or the year after that, but I'm telling you, this is going to turn around. I believe that. Once you have a QB, you have a chance, and we have one.

I have been saying this for years so I agree but I don't say the D man is going to be great for sure. Do I feel he will be? maybe but he could also be a Avg to good qb like Todd...you need time to say for sure, Also Warner won behind a bad OL in 08. So did Fran the man years ago. This is a big week for the D man Cambell will be the biggest ghost he has seen yet.
