Jets Offensive Line taking shape?

The offensive line is turning out to look good as Joe Douglas could conceivably add one more veteran tackle and we will have completely revamped what was the weakness last season...

LT: George Fant
LG: Alex Lewis
OC: Connor McGovern
RG: Greg Van Roten
RT: Chuma Edoga (expect the team to find a veteran option to compete or takeover the starting role)

So this opens the door when the team is allowed to access the year end physicals for all players on injured reserve the next step will be shop to trade Brian Winters or simply release him and open up $7 M...
With Winters’ salary, I think there’s no way he doesn’t get cut. I’m still expecting to see us draft a RT, even in a trade down scenario. Personally, I’m not expecting Edoga to develop into more than a capable backup.

I'd almost bet that Winters will be gone one way or the other in a couple weeks or less. He's a decent player when healthy but seems to struggle staying that way. I might add that it appears that Joe is doing exactly what he said he was going to do .....repair the damn "O" line or at least make a valiant effort to do so.

Im hoping for a trade down, taking Jones or Jackson and getting another pick or two in the process.

could Joe Douglas be still searching for talent, spot starter at right tackle, or does he look for someone who is a true swing just in case Fant can not hold down the left side, gives them the option to move him to right while the swing moves to left?

one swing tackle we could take a run at is former Cincinnati Bengal Cordy Glenn? can play both spots and would give us some security if Chuma Edoga can not start the season... Still curious if JD will try to acquire Jason Peters or Donald Penn to backup Fant at left tackle?

Looking at a re-run of A Seattle SF game in which Fant is the starting LT, it seems that the plan is not only better pass protection for Sam, but getting out in space, with Le Veon
being the recipient of much better downfield blocking. Fant seems to be excellent in space, although, I think, he could use some work in blocking technique. I love that Joe, being a former lineman, knows exactly what he’s looking for regarding fits. I have visions of Terrell Davis running behind that very mobile athletic Denver line , and it seems there’s a similar plan in place with the Jets. The Miami Sun-Sentinel did a story leading up to Super Bowl 32 against the Packers and talked about Green Bay’s number one priority being to stop Terrell Davis. Here’s what they had to say about his signature running style and incredible vision. (emphasis added)

The Broncos' signature run is a toss left or toss right to Davis. Sometimes, Elway will hand the ball to Davis going right or left, but it's a cosmetic difference. The line blocks it the same way.

As Davis starts in motion, the idea is to get the defensive linemen moving laterally to try to hold the perimeter and keep Davis inside. That allows the smaller Denver offensive linemen to angle-block rather than confront Green Bay's bigger defenders head-on.

They are not trying to blast the Packers off the line. That's not their style and they are not built for it. They are trying to get them moving so they can shove them aside and create wider gaps through which Davis can run.

Despite the number of times Denver runs the toss play, Davis doesn't often try to turn the corner and head down the sideline. He is a downhill runner. His thing is cutback, get through the gap, bust the linebacker tackle and take off.

And he does it well because of his decisiveness and vision. He is an instinctive back who sees holes develop an instant before they happen. He feels the gaps appearing, and he has cut back before the gaps are fully open. That gives him a head start into the hole.

The Packers have not faced an offensive line with a combination of this kind of runner and this kind of blocking scheme all season.

wonder if they will trot out this line next season:

Left TackleLeft GuardCenterRight GuardRight Tackle
George FantGreg Van RotenConnor McGovernJosh AndrewsAlex Lewis

Alex Lewis at Nebraska played Tackle and Tight End, he showed he is a capable space blocker and both Andrews and Van Roten are legit interior linemen... Give Fant his chance at left tackle and we know McGovern is the starter at center, backup for interior both guard spots and center is Jonotthan Harrison... Ben Braden could finally make the cut unless they draft... Continue to develop Edoga or use him as trade bait during the draft for anyone desperate for a tackle which there are plenty of teams...

With all the additions to the OL. We may be able focus our attention to drafting LT and Center in Rds #2 & #3. We then could either draft a CB, WR, ER or trade down to acquire additional picks

Did anyone catch the Pats /Seattle game they replayed on NFL? I just watched part of it and Mr. Fant played well at LT. His technique need little adjusting but he moved well, blocked well on both running plays and pass protection. My hope is he is the real deal.

If they do not go OT early in the draft, that is a possibility. I would have concerns about the right side. I like Lewis, but inside. He could play RT in a pinch, but I don't see it being an every down situation.

I think he has the physical tools. I just hope it translates.

Pro Football Talk is projecting the Jets will take Josh Jones, the tackle from Houston, in round 2.
Later
Why would JD do that at this point with Becton already in the fold? I could see a guy like Cushenberry at #48 but not another LT.

I would expect him to next go receiver or edge then maybe add a guard or center. I know they like a couple of the center/guards still available but I'm guessing that the next pick will be either edge or receiver. He might even look at and consider corners since he has already improved, at least in most peoples minds, the "O" line. I'm sure he's not through with the offense yet, but he is very much aware of our other needs as well. We'll know real soon.

looks like the Jets are trying to trade up to get a CB either Kristian Fulton, LSU or Trevon Diggs Alabama

Either one I believe would be a good addition to the roster and as I alluded to he's aware we have other needs too.
