I think they really are just kicking the tires. Dalton will likely want a lot of money. I think he was set to make around $17 Mil this season before getting cut. There are probably cheaper options out there in free agency that make sense to them.

I heard today that base salary is $3M with incentives a possible $7M total. That's a great deal for a solid veteran backup, probably because Dallas is his hometown and they have a decent chance of success this year. Nice insurance and perhaps leverage if Dak holds out.
