Jamal Adams: Adam Gase isn't right leader for Jets

Safety Jamal Adams wants a trade away from the Jets and he’s airing some of his grievances with the club ahead of training camp.

Adams is eligible for a contract extension and the Jets have talked about their desire to keep him, but the safety told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the team never made an offer to him this offseason. He said he would have respected the team’s approach more if they said “we’re not going to look to pay you this year, we want to keep adding players.”

Whatever the case on the contract front, respect for head coach Adam Gase may be a bit more difficult to come by for Adams. He said that he hasn’t spoken to Gase since the end of the season and that there wasn’t much of a relationship during the season.

“I don’t feel like he’s the right leader for this organization to reach the Promised Land,” Adams said. “As a leader, what really bothers me is that he doesn’t have a relationship with everybody in the building. At the end of the day, he doesn’t address the team. If there’s a problem in the locker room, he lets another coach address the team. If we’re playing s—-y and we’re losing, he doesn’t address the entire team as a group at halftime. He’ll walk out of the locker room and let another coach handle it.”

Adams told Mehta that he will be “showing up for my teammates” when training camp opens next week, but wants to be “with an organization that wants to win and do things the right way.” There’s little sign that he feels the Jets will fulfill the second half of that desire.

He is right about Gase, but he isn't the right leader either. If I'm the Jets I trade him to the highest bidder not named Dallas or I let him rot on the bench and pay his salary while wasting his prime years away. These idiots need to learn about contracts and the law.

Was never a fan of the Gase hire. And I'll take Adams at his word about Gase's coaching style. It certainly fits what we know about him so far. And if true, that is a problem. And he needs to fix it. But he won't suddenly turn into Bill Parcells either. It's up to Joe Douglas to figure this out. He needs to put his stamp on this franchise, immediately.

As for the trade demands and so forth - I'm not sure what Adams is doing. It's tone deaf given what is going on in the country. If he gets traded it sets a bad precedent. On the other hand, with all the shit going on with this team right now - it's a public relations mess. If they ship him out, fine, but Douglas and Christopher Johnson need to step up, and figure this out fast. I know Douglas has a vision for this team and a plan. I think its the right one. If Adams is part of those plans, then fix that. If he's not, trade him and move on.

I'm sure Woody is going to be out as owner if the allegations are true. In which case, either Christopher will stay on as the owner or they will be forced to sell the franchise by the league, just like the Titans. It takes years for franchises to overcome this kind of stuff. They need to get their act together - NOW!

I have said it before, I'm obviously no fan of Adam's public demands but it's the only way for a player to pressure a team. The league is a monopoly and the owners have all the leverage.
Douglas has mishandled this situation, in fact created it. You dont meet with a player, ensure him he is untouchable then shop him the following day , or take calls for him which ever is the case. You dont tell the man he will receive an extension offer by January if you have no plans to extend him. And don't think that the mismanagement of Osemele's injury and Faulk's injury were not noticed by Adam's and every other player. Look around the league the past few years , even longer and you will see plenty of players have done exactly what Adam's is doing and every time there are sign him threads for those players, Mack and Ramsey come immediately to mind. Both brought multiple premium picks. Adam's would have also. Now with the virus creating so much uncertainty and the Woody mess, that value may be somewhat diminished. I wouldn't be surprised if Adam's does sit out this season and plays out his final year. The risk / reward almost demands that's exactly what he does. He is the best safety in the league and is being paid the 32 highest salary this season , 3.2 million against his potential future earnings is an easy call. A first and third or first and a player and Douglas should jump on the offer, regardless of the team offering, minus an AFC East rival. The alternative is another year of off field noise and a third round compensatory pick.
As Sonny would say "How much does your father make? If your dad ever can't pay the rent and needs money, go ask Mickey Mantle. See what happens. Mickey Mantle don't care about you. Why should you care about him? Nobody cares."

Your letting your emotions get the best of you.
You dislike Gase, players have been calling him out since his first year in miami. Gase is the HC but only associated with some of the offensive players. Gase has not earned any respect. Quite the opposite. Remember, it's a business and players will respond to how they are treated. If shown no loyalty by management, and make no mistake about it, Gase is part of management, you cant expect respect in return.
This isn't player vs fan base, millionaire vs regular Joe's, its employee vs employer, millionaire vs billionaire. Pay the man or trade him to a team that will.
