The 27-year-old Clowney is looking for a contract around $21 million per year. The Jets are expected to have around $12 million in cap space once Trumaine Johnson comes off the books, according to Spotrac. With the proper contract structuring, the Jets could squeeze Clowney in. The question is whether Douglas, who stayed away from the high-priced offensive linemen this offseason, be willing to give Clowney that type of money with so many other holes on the roster. Defensive end is one of the NFL’s premium positions.

Didn't Johnson come off the books last month ?
. I thought they were using that money to pay the draft picks. Also until the grievances from Falk and Osemele are settled we have to retain 40% of their salaries is sport accounting for this. Adding legit pass rushing ability will mitigate the loss of adams.

Agree he would have to forget any expectations. $21mill is out.
He already recieved an offer from us in early free agency, his market has dried up completely. Raiders just made him a very low offer. They have $7.5 mill in cap space. Guy never had double digit sacks, 3 total last year. We're clearly rebuilding. Next years cap is significantly less. I dont see the point. Roll that money over t ok next season. What's he really offer on a one year deal besides potentially a higher draft pick. Next years draft is going to be difficult enough to figure as it is.
Ic he were smart he should sit out until a contender suddenly needs him for a big game due to covid leaving a hole. Then he may have some leverage.

I wouldn't do it, and don't think JD will either. Doesn't fit the model. We have plenty of DE's that can get 3 sacks and cost a whole hell of a lot less.

Rumor is................Clowney was only JOKING with McDougald about wanting to join the Jets. Of course that's just a rumor and the fact is he would probably play for any team dumb enough to pay his asking price. The Jets could swing it if they got creative with the contract but I don't believe JD would go out on a limb financially for him or any other big name player with performance questions.

He's not worth $21M at all. He's a good player, but not nearly as dominant as he was in college. Unless we got him for the right money, I'd pass.

Pass. The guy is a missing piece on a contending team. Situational player at this point and even in that situation his performance was lacking, at least last season.

We just dont have the money to sign him and with JD being told no cash spending, we cant even do a multi year deal with big signing bonus and low salary. But he would certainly fit with the circus atmosphere...
