Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley, their premier defensive free-agent acquisition of 2019, has decided not to play in 2020.

Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports that Mosley has opted out of the season. Mosley made his decision due to “family health concerns,” according to Cimini.

Mosley signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Jets. He appeared in only two games last season, due to a groin injury suffered during a dominant Week One performance against the Bills.

He bumps a $6 million salary from 2020 to 2021. That, in turn, will nudge his 2021 base salary of $16 million to 2022.

Earlier this year, Mosley received a $10 million roster bonus. He made $8.5 million in 2019.

Mosley’s decision comes a week after the Jets traded safety Jamal Adams to the Seahawks.

So Mosley fleeced the Jets for $18.5 mil ane played 2 games
No wonder he said fuck it I'll sit out
If the MLB can't make it say goodby to the NFL anyway
Unless they come up with this quick vaccine , then that changes everything
Maybe delay the start and see where it goes from there
Winter ball and a spring SuperBowl
I'll take it !!!

It is not an accrued season against their contract if they opt out. So I’m not sure fleeced is the proper term. He injured his groin last year. U try running and cutting the way a inside LB needs to do with an injured groin. As far as him coming back too early and reinjuring it, I put that on the training staff.
as far as this year, blaming anyone for not wanting to risk their families and their lives is kind of selfishly irresponsible. We all miss football, but it is a game. This virus kills. That is life.
I will repeat again, there SHOULD NOT be a season this year. I’ve first hand seen way too much death in the last few months. No game is worth that.

C.J. Mosley’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 season has a number of implications on his contract and the Jets’ salary cap.

Mosley voluntarily opted out of the 2020 season due to family health concerns, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Since Mosley voluntarily opted out, he’ll either receive a $350,000 stipend if he’s considered medically higher-risk or a $150,000 salary advance.

As for Mosley’s contract, he still has four years left on the five-year, $85 million contract he signed in 2019. That means the Jets will have control of him through the 2024 season.

According to Over The Cap, Mosley was supposed to have a 2020 cap hit of $17.5 million, but it will now be $10 million, which was his roster bonus. In 2021, Mosley’s cap hit will either be $7.5 million or $7.35 million depending on if he receives the aforementioned $350,000 or $150,000. So the Jets will have more cap space in 2021 because of that, though it remains to be seen what the NFL salary cap will be next season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, Mosley’s cap hit will be $17.5 million, $8 million of which is fully guaranteed. His cap charge will be $18.5 million for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. None of these numbers have yet to be finalized, though.

Mosley’s opt-out is obviously a huge blow for the Jets defense. After the Jets traded Jamal Adams to the Seahawks, Mosley was supposed to be the centerpiece of the defense. The Jets have a ton of middle linebacker depth — this news bodes well for Avery Williamson — but Gang Green was anticipating Mosley’s return this year after he missed the majority of the 2019 season.

Now Mosley won’t put a Jets uniform on again until 2021. After playing in parts of just two games in his first season with the Jets, he has already made $29 million off his monster deal.

Yea I'm pretty sure fleeced fits perfectly

Definition of fleece (Entry 2 of 2) transitive verb. 1a : to strip of money or property by fraud or extortion. b : to charge excessively for goods or services.

29 mil for 2 games , you tell me

I was hoping he would play because his skill set would have off set much of the loss caused by the loss of Adams. That being said I don't blame him or begrudge him in the least for being cautious for the benefit of his family.

I've busted my ass my whole life for a jack shit salary to the point where I never sleep through the night cause of pain in any number of places. I'd give my left nut for $150k per year to work no less stay home. and both nuts for 350k forany amount of time.

that said, I can't blame these guys for staying home, and its not their fault that my job sucks ass

They don't deserve any compensation if they decide to not play. Getting $150K to sit on your ass while some of us are in danger of losing our business or jobs is why I won't care about the NFL. There are other reasons too. I will just continue to enjoy hockey.

this is true. I'm still working any time I can because I have no choice. ... and I'm not making anywhere near 150k to do so. and I consider myself to be pretty darn good at my job

Are we looking at the end of the NFL? These vaccines are only projected to give four months protection and the virus can mutate. At least it didn't end with a Patriots win. Can you have a sport where guys line up face to face and exhale on each other? You would need completely closed helmets with battery-powered air con.

At least this dumb 'black national anthem' scheme will die quietly. Can you imagine the hypocritical outrage if someone took a knee while it was being played?

As a player you would have to feel pretty damn secure in your place on the roster before you decide to opt out. Mosely is definitely one of those guys. The Jets have too much money tied up in his contract to ever think of parting ways with him. About the best they could do would be to draft a middle linebacker to provide some motivation for Mosely to play.
You have to wonder if a vacine is released and the number of cases did a nose dive and these guys are sitting at home watching their backups get all their reps. I would would think that would be hard to take for a hyper competitive athlete. Esp. when they see fans being interviewed and hear , "Mosely? Who's that? I don't recognize the name".
