Sam Darnold and Josh Allen Set to Square Off to Open the 2020 Season

After posting a 7-9 record last season, the Jets will have seven games against 2019 playoff teams and the 2020 schedule strength is .533. With training camp on the horizon and September not too far off in the distance, NewYorkJets.com is examining each of the Green & White's matchups next season. We start our series with Bills insider Chris Brown as the Jets will travel to Buffalo in Week 1 and the two clubs will have their return date at MetLife Stadium in Week 7.

The Headline
The Buffalo Bills haven't won the AFC East since 1995, but there is reason for optimism in Western New York. The division appears up for grabs and the Bills, a club that has earned postseason trips in two of the past three seasons, are the betting favorites.

"It's the question of you've been the hunter," Brown said of the Bills' unfamiliar role. "How do you take on the role of being the hunted? The coaching staff and GM Brandon Beane have stated it time and time again when they've been asked this question and they've said, 'Hey look, New England won the division last year and until somebody beats them on the field, they are still the team to beat.' And I understand that logic completely, but when you are looking at it on paper, the Bills roster top to bottom — offense, defense and special teams — is probably the deepest in the division right now with what they've been able to assemble over the course of the last three years."

What's Changed
The Bills have system continuity on both sides of the ball and one of the game's underrated head coaches in Sean McDermott. GM Brandon Beane made a plethora of moves to help an already stout defense, but the deal that could impact Buffalo the most was his trade acquisition of a No. 1 receiver in Stefon Diggs.

"What they're getting is a truly elite receiver. I don't think I'm overstating it, saying he's probably a top-five, top-seven in the league at the receiver position," Brown said of Diggs. "And for anybody who wants to question that, go look at his catch rate – 81.8 percent last year. Go look at his touchdown marks. In the last three years, he has 23 touchdowns… What the Bills needed was a point producer, a proven point producer, and he gives them that."

Matchups to Watch
Much like Sam Darnold, Allen's numbers got better his sophomore campaign yet questions remain about his downfield accuracy and ball security. With the expected full return of C.J. Mosley, the Jets will be tough to run on and you can expect Gregg Williams to bring the heat.

"The deep-ball accuracy is an area where he has to get better. He struggled with that last year, only a 25 completion percentage for 20 yards or more and that number has to get up," Brown said of Allen. "Typically in the league, the better quarterbacks are up around 40 percent. He has to hit about one or two of those a week to keep defensive coordinators honest… Deep-ball accuracy is probably No. 1 and ball security when he takes off and runs. He had 16 fumbles counting the wild card game for 17 games last year."

The Bills are expected to field one of the NFL's top defenses, but can Darnold and his new wideouts take advantage of whomever is lining up across the way from Tre'Davious White and in the slot. The Bills signed Josh Norman in free agency and the 32-year-old veteran is hoping to rebound after an uneven run in Washington.

"He believes this is a scheme that best fits his skill-set. He is very excited to be back with Sean McDermott after playing for him and playing his best football under McDermott in Carolina where he went to the Pro Bowl," Brown said. "I think he's looking to reclaim his status as a top-end corner in this league. Whether he can beat Levi Wallace out for that job remains to be seen."

Why It's Important
The opener provides a chance for the Green & White to get a divisional triumph on the road before hosting San Francisco in Week 2. The Bills, who will follow up the opener with a road date against the Dolphins, will have 10 days to prepare for the return matchup in October.

"It's going to be interesting what ramifications those two games have knowing the last time they're going to play 'em, it's not even going to be Halloween yet. It's a different dynamic for sure," Brown said. "The Bills and the Jets for that matter are going to have to hope they aren't in direct competition with one another come the back end of the schedule because they're not going to have that game they usually have to maybe make up a difference or create some separation in the division standings."

I'm going to miss this game because I will be out of touch with all technology for at least a week so I'll catch the highlight reels when I return home. I'm hoping for the team to make a good impression but this early in the season and under the current situation hope is all I can muster.

At least wait until Week 4 before giving up the season. Tradition must be respected.

There will be a lot of rust on Sunday and anything can happen.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Patriots for the AFC East. Belichick does the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

I agree. I'm a Stars fan and football has always come first, but watching all this political BS in the NFL has made me not give a shit. I haven't read or watched one camp report. I was actually surprised when my friend said the season started Thursday. Maybe that's because I've been preoccupied with trying to keep my business open or maybe its because I have no faith in the organization or maybe its because the Stars are still in the playoffs.

I'm torn on this season myself! First off I don't know if this year will even last the full season. Covid-19 really has its grips on the world right now and IMO, until there's a vaccine for it, this may continue. Even if it does, we aren't playing with a full roster and even if we did, we still would probably suck. So I no longer live in the NY-NJ-Metro area and haven't in over 20 years but I've had Direct TV and the NFL Ticket off and on for the past 15 years. This year I don't think I'm going to get it because of my concerns. I guess I'll call Direct TV and see if they have any specials. If so, then I guess I'll do it and watch with one eye open and the other closed. As far this season goes, until the Jets prove me wrong I don't see them winning more then about 6 games this year. Bills 27-Jets 10.

I don't watch sports to get political opinions. That doesn't make me a racist. That just means I don't want my sports and politics together. I watch sports to escape the worlds problems.

Problem with that is these players can’t escape the world’s problems. They are still black men that have and in some chases, still go through shit because there black. Being famous and rich doesn’t make them exempt to the world’s problems. Most of there family and friends are smacked dabbed in the thick of these worlds problems because they still live in the neighborhoods these players grow up in.

This is what you don’t understand! These players can’t escape these issues and this is they’re platform and opportunities to express their angers with it and try to stop it. I don’t blame these black men for standing up and doing what’s right. I’ve experienced this bullshit racism myself so I know what it feels like.

Even for the white players or some of them, they’re watching their teammates or friends or maybe even family experience this shit. They may not be but the people around them are and they want to do something about it as well. Open your eyes and wake up dude!

Suprised to see George Fant as a captain. If his play on Sundays is representative of a captain, then JoeD really hit the jackpot for OTs this offseason.

3 Matchups to Watch: Jets at Bills

hwt3vb3vpjy7jgmcplec.jpg

Sam Darnold vs. Bills Secondary
The Bills defense finished No. 3 in the NFL in 2019 -- No. 4 against the pass -- allowing 195.2 yards per game. Their secondary is led by Pro Bowl CB Tre'Davious White, who tied for the NFL lead with 6 interceptions, in addition to 17 pass defenses and 58 tackles. White signed a multi-year extension earlier this week. In a year without any OTAs or preseason games, Buffalo has continuity on both sides of the ball.

"We know we're playing a really good defense," Jets Head Coach Adam Gase said. "Sean [McDermott] has basically been building this the way that he's needed it built since he's gotten there. Now these guys have multiple years of experience together. … When you develop that kind of chemistry, that's what makes you good. When you keep playing the same defenses, it's no different than playing in the same offense. This is definitely a tough challenge. The secondary is outstanding, they've been one of the best pass defenses in the NFL the last couple of years. Their front is tough. You're looking at three levels that are very difficult to go against."

Quarterback Sam Darnold has an 81.5 quarterback rating in three career games against the Bills, two of them in Orchard Park, NY. He's thrown for 544 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions while completing 66.3% of his passes and is familiar with defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier's scheme that features a lot of Cover 4.

"First and foremost, there are so many things you can do off of it," Darnold said of Cover 4. "It's the best coverage to start out in if you want to disguise or bring some pressure. From that aspect, it can be tough and challenging to go against. Another aspect is they have a bunch of zones of the field covered. Being able to disguise and bring different pressures and coverages off of that base Cover-4 look. That can be the hardest part for an offense."

Jets Defense vs. Josh Allen
The Jets' defense needs to account for Bills QB Josh Allen both in the pass and run game because he finished third among quarterbacks last season with 510 rushing yards -- behind Lamar Jackson, the NFL's MVP, and Kyler Murray. In the 2019 season opener at MetLife, Allen threw for 254 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions and ran for a score. He has 139 total rushing yards and 2 TDs on 19 attempts in three games against the Green & White.

"He's extremely fast for a guy his size and plays with great physicality," Gase said. "This guy really causes a lot of problems because when he does stuff like this, it's not something defenses in the NFL really want to account for because you don't think the quarterback is going to run the ball. That's what catches D-linemen off guard, linebackers drop thinking he's going to throw."

New Jets OL vs. Bills DL
The Jets' starting offensive line on Sunday will consist of five new players compared to Week 1 last year. The unofficial depth chart that was published Monday had, from left to right, Mekhi Becton, Alex Lewis, Connor McGovern, Greg Van Roten and George Fant, who was named one of five team captains. Lewis is the only returning player from last season on the projected starting line, but Fant believes they're ready for their first live action as a unit against a tough Bills defensive line.

"Obviously we're new together, but pretty much everybody has played a lot of NFL football besides Mekhi," he said. "We have a good jell going right now and we're excited to play somebody else. … They're a good defensive front. They've been together for a little bit and have some new guys in there with some of the old. They're definitely going to be a test, they're disruptive."
