Over 40 lol.

It may seem like I was saying that the Bucs won the game all by themselves & that I am a Brady fan which I am not. but I think we all know that in every game there are three teams playing on the field one wearing black & white uniforms.

I am going to assume that most old fans feel like I do that when you throw a bomb today there is a better chance of a 45 yard flag then a 45 yard catch. If you touch a QB head as you are falling to the ground you get a flag. etc etc etc.

I also will say i liked both teams on Sunday & only because of TB & BA did I want Tampa to win. But i must also say that they were just so many bad calls on both sides but Tampa was helped 75% of the time. OK lets get over that game & lets talk about the big picture. Please

a) Is the game good or does this (flags) upset you too?
b) Is TV so good now that we question plays more then we did 30 years ago?
1) Are the flags getting worse in this day & age?
2) I think they (refs) help decide a game 15% of the time...maybe more...in the old days it seemed to be less
3) Is the game just too fast in this day & age?
4) Do we need more refs, if so where?
5) Is instant replay good (I say no).
6) Do we need more instant replay?
7) Do refs favor players or teams?
8) I have to ask this in this day & age.........How do we know money is not involved with the refs??? what is done to prevent a bad ref?

What would you do & should we all say something to the league. I for one hate what is going on now in football. Yes I want a safe game but the crazy flags just kill me.

What bothers me most is the preferential treatment that 'stars' get. It happens in all sports particularly basketball and football. Brady is a guy who continually whines to refs and most times it works if not the past play but the next one and the next one. I used to say to myself while watching a NYJet brush against Brady's facemask and getting 15 yard personal foul, "next time make it worth your while and bash his head into the turf, then he'll have something to cry about". Yikes that was therapeutic! I guess it goes to CH's rant about Brady never getting touched. That's a big part of why he's still standing. The leagues do protect their stars, while guys like Darnold gets his head caved in and no foul.

Very true but others get protected as you said too. He is just in bigger games more often. Farve, Hart Blenda played many years too. The late great Jacques Plante played until 46? as a goalie many years without a mask.

But does the rest not get to you too? I hate all these flags & I hate reviews. why because the guy in the booth that had that position at one time says the opposite of the guy in the booth many times....so again it belongs to the guy that is in charge. so except for time it all goes down to a person making a call

But jerry the only thing that bothers you is the star factor? Interesting

3) Is the game just too fast in this day & age? Faster than it used to be. Too fast? Not sure.
4) Do we need more refs, if so where? No
5) Is instant replay good (I say no). Yes, if used on plays it should be, not restricted to certain plays, but the downside is games way too long.
6) Do we need more instant replay? See above - better , not more.
7) Do refs favor players or teams? If they favor anyone, it is the teams.
8) I have to ask this in this day & age.........How do we know money is not involved with the refs??? We don't what is done to prevent a bad ref?Hopefully, league offices looking a films and spot anything that doesn't look right.

Wow butterscotch ! This is a really hairy topic to delve into. I absolutely hate all the flags and the frequency of them does seem to be increasing all the time. The TV coverage has, with the improvement of cameras and their set ups, made it much easier for the viewers, us, to see those infractions or perceived infractions more clearly. To be fair the refs don't have that advantage. How much they actually can see has limitations so the possibility of mistakes is always there. Obviously though they definitely do influence the outcome of the game but again their influence could keep a game from being unfairly won or lost either way. That's why I do like instant replay because oftentimes it causes the overturn of a bad call and sometimes gives the coach a little more confidence to throw the challenge flag. Is money involved ? I'm guessing you mean bribes. Sure. It could be. The same could be said of players like a receiver having an excessive number of drops as an example. I don't believe that's happening, It could be but I don't have any reason to think so. Do refs favor players or teams ? That one I do believe. They may not do it consciously, but I think it does impact some of their calls. In the Superbowl I believe that the Chiefs got called for infractions several times that were overlooked when those infractions were committed by Bucs players. My opinion. If I were to suggest a fix to the possible ref favoritism situation it would maybe be a neutral observer up above watching for trends among the games refs for such incidences. The best solution would probably be for the players to stop doing those things that draw flags. I know,...........fat chance of that.

Great post I almost agree with everything you say except the review...I lost a WS because there was none in 1985 but i still say no IMO If there are three teams on the field why can't the players that drop a ball etc get a do over too.?

I said the exact same thing watcnin the game. And the halftime show.
I was like either I'm too old for this shit or the game passed me by.
Where's Don Criqui , Al D. Curt Gowdy .
Flags just about ruined the sport for me .
It's no longer the sport I grew up,with and loved.
And yea I haven't seen 40 in a long time

I am not crazy on the holding penalty for the D...you could have a 4th & 40 on a punt & get a first down. there needs to be a change

But again the guy on TV often does not agree with the guy in the booth & NY & he has had the same job before. No two people will agree often

To answer your question Buttercup, I do hate all of the flags just hate the preferential treatment some players/teams get even more. The refs have become the game which is bass akwards. Watching football and the other football the refs have taken over. Every time there is a great play you first look for the flag, and if its not the refs flag its the coach's. In both cases the game suffers for the sake of 'perfection'. Well it still isn't perfect, in fact its worse for all of the reasons that are given before me. I forget the playoff game this year, one of the earlier ones, it was refreshingly flag free and that's not because the teams were 'penalty-free' but because the refs let the teams play. It wasn't dirty or dangerous, just football. I was hoping that would continue, but I was obviously disappointed.

I understand and sometimes the review galls me as well. I do believe it contributes to lengthening the game sometimes and Old#15 brings to light another good point. The game he mentioned that was flag free even though not penalty free. More often than not the refs are way to picky in the name of safety, or maybe in fear of losing their jobs if they miss a call. No one, at least no one that I know, wants to see any players get injured, but it is a contact sport, or at least it used to be, and these guys get very well paid for the risk that they knowingly take. I said it before, last year I think, at the rate we are going pro football will soon be flag football. Lets get back to real football and allow at least reasonable and accidental contact.

I agree with that....but I thought it was flag (yellow) football lol

I forgot the question cause I got stuck trying to figure out why your numbers go, a, b,1,2,3,4,5

I hate the" what is a catch" rule. takes all day to decide sometimes and still not right

also hate the fumbling in the endzone rule. and of course as everyone knows, I don' t really like brady too much either. and to answer that part of the question he is clearly favored. itvalways amazes me that the guy who hells hardest at the official gets favored rather than a guy who goes about his business

football is no longer football and it never will be again. I dont know if its the steroids, or just guys getting huge in the weight room but these guys can hit to kill now. in the old days, it seemed most guys were about the same build and everyone took sick hits from everyone. men were men back then.

Yup ,
And today we ( they ) celebrate
The women coaching men
The women refereeing men
The women interviewing men
The women who will play vs men
The men who race in girls sports
Men who want to be women
Women who want to be men
What the fuck is going on ?
I'm afraid men will never be men again ( at least thats what society is pushing for )

Not that there's anything wrong with that !!!!!

How many of you think that this beingthe first Superbowl with a lady official had something to do with the number of flags thrown? No, I'm not blaming the woman, but the NFL thinking there might be more attention than usual decided not to go with the "just let them play" game plan and instructed the crew to call a tighter game. That would surely hurt the Chiefs more as they had the all the O line injuries and just plain played a sloppier game. In the end though, I think the Chiefs were going to lose no matter how the game was called.
