The Marcus Maye situation took an acrimonious turn when his agent criticized the Jets on social media. It's unusual for an agent to do that, an indication the frustration runs deep.

Here's my take: Maye is a good, not elite free safety who should get somewhere between $10 million to $12 million per year, an APY that would allow him to crack the top 10 at safety. (The franchise tag is projected at $11.2 million.) He's a good soldier, respected in the locker room -- a captain. If you can't re-sign a player like Maye, who can you re-sign?

What makes me think the situation will continue to fester is Douglas doesn't like to pay premium dollars at the safety position. (See: Jamal Adams.) He also has Ashtyn Davis waiting in the wings. Davis is a Douglas draft pick, a natural free safety and a player held in high regard despite a nondescript rookie season.

As for Maye, the Jets have the leverage. It's called the franchise tag, and they likely will use it by Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. That would give the sides until July 15 to work out a long-term deal.

Since the 2010 draft, the Jets have re-signed five picks to second contracts -- Muhammad Wilkerson, Bilal Powell, Brian Winters, Quincy Enunwa and Jordan Jenkins. That explains a lot. They never will be contenders until they catch up with the rest of the league in the draft-and-develop area.

Only 5 second contracts in 11 years. That is an amazing stat and a perfect description of our incompetence.

Maye wants more money but plays average level with few INTs,Sacks, anything. Maye stops talking and play high level for 2 years and get paid. Suppose to do that right out of College to get paid. Unless Maye thinks all talk equals top Safety like the one Jets got rid off to Seattle. Hows that working? Not sure Seattle is now happy about that trade and Maye isnt close to Seattles Safety of complaints

Why do Jet fans get bummed out when Jet players want to get paid ? Why do Jet fans turn on their stars when they demand to get paid ? Marcus Maye is a solid player who should get paid . If the Jets continue to threat their players in this manner, why on earth would any player want to come here unless we over pay. Once we over pay, why should that player run through a wall ?

that is the problem players believe this is the place to go because in the past we over paid for services and still have one on the roster in CJ Mosley...

Not going to pay $17 M annual for an above average safety albeit a team leader, captain and probably face of the defense but his market value is $13 M annual and his tag price is $11.2 M for one year... Joe Douglas can not be brash and negotiate with a player and his agent who is seeking elite money for circus interceptions... July 15 deadline to negotiate extension off the franchise tag... New coaching staff, probably a ton new talent joining the roster to help integrate the game plan on both sides of the ball... Negotiating with a outspoken agent using social media to hype up his client while defacing the organization is a distraction the team does not need... So Joe Douglas weighing option to tag Maye or walk away from him...

Tag him $11.2 M for one year and $5.6 M dead money if the team tries to trade him there after, just saying many options...

Joe is not going to pay him what he is asking. I support that. I like Maye. He has played well has a good locker room rep. I believe he is, all things considered, an above average safety and definitely deserves to get paid. I also believe he will get a good contract but not until his demands become more realistic. I expect that he will get tagged and then eventually they will get a deal done that suits both sides.

No Moe. This time it isn't the MCC talking. It's me.

Just pay the man. He is home-grown talent. Let's face it that's a rarity for this team. I'm not saying overpay him but I view the Jets tagging him as a way of saying EARN IT. Maye goes out and has an All-Pro season or continues to get better then I gladly give him market value.
