Some Teams Have Makeup Concerns with Zach Wilson

CBS reporter Jason La Canfora broke some interesting news that some NFL teams felt BYU quarterback Zach Wilson could go high in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and be the second quarterback selected after Clemson's Trevor Lawrence. Since the end of the 2020 NFL Draft, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields has been the consensus second-rated quarterback, but La Canfora quoted an executive who felt Wilson could go ahead of Fields. After reading that excellent report by La Canfora, WalterFootball.com followed up with team sources to see if they agreed with that contention. Multiple sources said it was possible that Wilson could go ahead of Fields and high in the first round, but they also said that some teams have character and makeup concerns with Wilson, so there could be some discrepancies across teams and a lack of consensus.

In speaking to a director of college scouting from a NFC team that is in the market for a new quarterback, he outlined the makeup concerns with Wilson:

"Johnny Manziel comp without the [drugs]. [Wilson] is fun to watch, but is he a 1-year flash in the pan? He's a backyard baller who is fun to watch."

"Someone will grab him in the first [round]. I doubt he gets to the second [round] because once the third quarterback goes, after Lawrence and Fields, there will be a run on them. [Wilson] has character concerns, rich kid who is an entitled brat - uncle owns Jet Blue -, parents are a pain, not a leader, selfish, and he's a know-it-all.

"His positives are that he's super competitive, not to get scared and won't back down, extremely confident, very smart with keen recall and teammates will play for him."

That college director outlined the makeup of Wilson well, but his team is strict on character, so perhaps that plays into them having Wilson as the fourth quarterback.

In speaking to a director of college scouting from another team, they said this regarding Wilson in the first round:

"[Wilson]'s going to go high. He may rise to the second quarterback in the draft. I think he's a second-rounder, but I just feel the quarterback spot is different than others and the round is just a starting point. The postseason process changes a lot. He is as talented as the rest, minus Lawrence."

Rounding out the responses we got from team sources, here is what we heard. A third college director thought Wilson would go late in the first round or early in the second round. A player personnel director thought Wilson would go in Round 1, and a senior director of player personnel thought Wilson would go in the second round.

Thus there is big variety in prospect evaluation across the league, and those spreads can happen with quarterback prospects in particular. Add in that some teams have football-character concerns with Wilson, and he could have a big range in the 2021 NFL Draft from high in the first round to somewhere in the second round.

I read the same thing about his character concerns, but a lot of that has been answered.
Exactly. He is the football equivalent of a basketball "gym rat", always working on improving, both physically and mentally.
Coaches rave about his competitive ability and how quickly he absorbs, and USES information. Just because his family is rich , it doesn't mean he isn't a competitive and a hard worker. Those comments that say different are either jealous or stereotyping, without really knowing him, and have been answered since those negatives were printed.
Don't forget, many of the BYU players have completed two year missions overseas, and are older than most college players. Wilson fitting in with them speaks to his maturity - he won't feel like the "kid in the room" that many rookie QBs feel coming into the NFL.

If he has grown up around money, then maybe the NFL dollars won't send him into a tailspin, as happens to some others...

Just because the article agrees with you, it doesn't mean you're not a bit crazy. After all, you ARE a Jets fan. :)

here is the thing that bugs me any starting QB should be a or one of the leaders of the team and should be appointed that Captain role by his peers, meaning team mates which he was not...

he may be a good guy, he may turn out and be a decent QB but if the locker room won't follow him then we will have a problem long term yet again but this time it will be by the guy that should be the face of the franchise but he will be standing alone...

The BYU locker room followed him in spades and his teammates rave about his work ethic, his fanatical film study, and his leadership. Geez, the Jets have enough real problems to solve, just do a little research and stop making up ones that don't exist.

Here are some of the rebuttals to that character-assassination report. Some of the speculation even extends to the report being floated by a team hoping to cause Wilson to drop in the draft so they'd have a shot at him.

Schefter said he had gotten off the phone with a source telling him about Wilson moments before joining the show, and said he’s only heard rave reviews. His belief? Wilson, not Justin Fields, is the second quarterback picked in the NFL Draft, meaning he may well be outside of the 49ers’ range, and likely to the New York Jets, at No. 2.

“Wow. I mean, first of all, everything you said there just floored me and it floored me because number one, I think he’s gonna be the second quarterback picked, not the third,” Schefter said. “I think he’ll go second. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the guy, and that he got quote unquote “special intangibles.” I hung up the phone, literally before I came on the show, with somebody who was telling me all about him, and it couldn’t have been any further from what you said. I can’t even believe we’re talking about the same guy.”

His QB coach:

Maybe the best article and thorough rebuttal of all:

Bottom line from all of the above: Zach Wilson has literally the opposite of character concerns.

As always, as Draft day comes there are one or two players that people find dirt on and they slip in the draft. Whoever slides down will be good value to the team that gets them.

Yes. It is like the old "Spy VS Spy" cartoons in MAD Comics, each side trying to out think the other and using dirty tricks to get their way.
