Building in New York

Everything I have preached about why it is almost impossible to truly build in New York was shown today with the Rangers. The team has been in a slow, true build, a very good build. Ownership got rid of the team president, John Davidson, and GM Jeff Gorton because they want to win now.

Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, give the Johnsons the strength to let Douglas and Saleh build their own way, at their own pace.

James Dolan is a freaking idiot. But for the absence of an enforcer, those guys have done a great job building that team the right way.

Wow, Dolan is an idiot. On a separate note, look at how successful the Knicks have been once they finally hired a good coach. Let’s hope that Woody is paying attention.
On another separate note, I hope that the Rangers gang up on Tom Wilson tonight and beat the shit out of him. He is the most despicable hockey goon I have ever seen.

You never saw "Leapin" Lou Fontinato?
I once told Gordie Howe that I remembered his fight with Lou, and he said to me "He tried to slice off my ear, so I broke his nose".

I started watching the Rangers back in the Broadstreet Bullies era, so I remember the Schultzes and Moose Duponts who masqueraded as hockey players. Every team seemingly had at least one enforcer/goon back then. I wish we had Nick Fotiu, Mark Messier or Ronnie Harris the other night because Wilson wouldn't have been able to strut off the ice like he did.

It’s funny that you mentioned Lou Fontinato. I actually did see him quite a bit. In the first Rangers game that I ever went to (50 cents with my G.O. card), Lou actually scored the only goal for the Rangers in a 5-1 loss. I loved that Rangers team, and my first nickname was Gumper because I was the goalie for our roller hockey team in Queens. Andy Bathgate was my hockey idol in those days.

Point well taken. The most disgraceful example of the Broad Street Bullies was when Schultz beat up Dale Rolfe, and no Ranger came to help. That was why I was extra happy when it was the Flyers whom the Islanders beat for their first Cup (I had become an Islanders fan by that time).

that was the exact flashback I got watching Wilson's antics.

add Brad Park (people forget how tough he was because he also scored points) and Reggie Fleming to the list

BTW: The Davidson-Gorton firing was ridiculous. Sooooo many good youngsters now from all those trade dealine draft picks they got.

Grrrrrrr.....

With the Jets:

1. They never had a GM who could draft well enough to truly build, and
2. It always would get short-circuited by the team going after some free agents to become playoff contenders quicker.

So, I would say no, the Jets haven't been doing it slow and steady for a half century. They instead have destroyed their own rebuilds, failed spectacularly, and then had to start over yet again.

Reggie Fleming was nothing but a goon. He played his part perfect. Always getting into a fight with the other teams top player. Took him out for 5 minutes. The best fighters bar none was Clark Gilles and John Ferguson. The dirtiest player was Derek Sanderson.
