And like that, questions arise about Winston's throwing shoulder...

Report: Jameis Winston getting more tests on throwing shoulder

Quarterbacks were scheduled to talk at the NFL Scouting Combine yesterday, but Jameis Winston never arrived because of “medical tests.”

As it turns out, those tests might be a bigger concern than anyone knew.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Winston is having further tests to determine the cause of weakness in his throwing shoulder.

That might also explain the equivocation about whether he’s going to throw here in Indianapolis or not, and speaks to the real benefit of the Combine to teams. Having centralized medical testing allows teams to get to the bottom of this together.

At a time when the Buccaneers are widely assumed to be thinking about Winston with the top pick, his health could become a major story here, such that he wasn’t one already.

Jameis Winston - QB - Player
Florida State QB Jameis Winston required further testing on his shoulder after experiencing "weakness" in his throwing arm at the NFL Combine.
The extent of the concern is not yet known, but ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Winston underwent an "Electromyography" to analyze the cells in his shoulder. The test will presumably provide NFL teams with some answers about Winston's arm discomfort. Winston weighed in at 6-foot-4, 231 earlier in the week. He is seen as the favorite to be drafted No. 1 overall by Tampa Bay.

Jameis Winston’s coach says shoulder tests were news to him

The condition of quarterback Jameis Winston’s throwing shoulder became a thing a moment ago, when ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Winston was getting more tests to determine the cause of weakness.

But the guy who has seen Winston throw more than anyone lately isn’t sure it’s a big deal.

Quarterback tutor George Whitfield said the report was “news to me,” and that “I just think they’re being precautious.”

Whitfield said Winston last threw on Tuesday, but he didn’t see any signs of a medical problem.

“He’s actually getting stronger,” Whitfield said.

This will make Winston’s interview here even more interesting, whenever it happens.

The plot thickens.

A little over a month ago, most of the draft pundits were guaranteeing that Mariota was the shoo in pick at #1 . A month later, after the Ducks killed FSU, Winston became the shoo in #1 pick. Go figure.

There will be a lot more drama in the next two months. In the end nobody will know until Rodger says, "With the first pick in the 2015 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select...................................................

Hey, who knows, we might be plugging NY Jets in where Tampa Bay Bucs are in the sentence. :)

Tommy john is done in your elbow, not your shoulder...which raises the question. Why would he throw if he is injured?

i agree but do you really trust the med reports all the time? If they came out and said it was tommy john his stock would drop like a rock.

Right, which makes me think it's bogus because why would he throw with a bum shoulder

i was insinuating his arm would be better then ever like with pitchers in baseball after tommy john surgery..

yeah but it is a long road and he would not be ready for tc actually might have to sit for the whole season like if he was red-shirted.

Jameis Winston - QB - Player
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Jameis Winston "checked out fine at the hospital" after doctors at the NFL Combine discovered "weakness" in his throwing shoulder.
RapSheet reports that just one doctor perceived the weakness, which is common in pitchers. Winston pitches for the Florida State baseball team. Per Rapoport, the "throwing-related nerve issue" is "likely minor." It sounds like Winston's shoulder "injury" will end up as a non-story within a few days.
