According to the Times, Gruden wrote emails over the course of several years in which he “denounced the emergence of women as referees, the drafting of a gay player and the tolerance of players protesting during the playing of the national anthem.”

The emails were written while Gruden was an analyst at ESPN, the Times reported. Gruden was head coach of the Raiders from 1998-2001, then coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2002-08 before being an analyst at ESPN from 2009-17.

He has been the Raiders’ coach since 2018.

According to the Times, Gruden used homophobic and misogynistic language on multiple occasions to describe NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, he felt the league had pressured the then-St. Louis Rams to draft openly gay player Michael Sam in 2014, and he said that player Eric Reid should be fired for protesting during the national anthem (Reid was the second NFL player to do so after Colin Kaepernick, among other incidents).

This follows the report last week from The Wall Street Journal that said Gruden used a racist trope to describe Smith’s face and questioned his intelligence.

Not sure why women shouldn't be officials, it's not as if they are expected to physically separate the players like boxing referees. The other two accusations seem legitimate opinions, he is not complaining that Sam is gay but that pressure was applied to draft him, and a number of people disagree with paid employees making political statements on employers' time. As for abusive references to Goodell, we have all felt like making those on occasions.

Looks a bit like Chucky has been fitted up by the thought police. I would guess that the main issue was opposition to Goodell. Now the woke political statements are mandatory, encapsulated in silly slogans on the backs of the players' helmets.

I was thinking about the context of these emails and I'm not trying to defend Gruden, but what if he said in regards to:

• drafting Michael Sam his email went "I'm not sure how the lockerroom is going to react to him."
• women refs " I have a safety concern with them on the field with NFL 300 pounders."
• tolerating player protests "I don't think it is right."
• DSmith - I'm not touching that one.

I guess what I'm saying is that until I see the full context of what he is saying at that particular time, I'm not going to jump on any bandwagon or judge him too harshly other than to say he must not be overly bright. Putting anything remotely offensive today in an email is dumb; ten years ago not so much.

Feel for Grudens son. Reports are he is staying on as assistant strength and conditioning coach. Can't imagine what it's like for him to walk into the facility every morning
