Position of Needs: Offense

Right Guard - Wide Receiver - Tight End

The fear that McGovern would regress following a career season in 2019 with the Broncos came to fruition last year in New York. His overall PFF grade fell 10 points from 2019 to 2020, and that was even with improved play as a run blocker. McGovern was one of the worst pass-protecting centers in the NFL in 2020, coming away from the season with a 42.7 pass-blocking grade. The left side of the Jets’ offensive line should be set, but McGovern is part of a group that will need to show improvement to keep Zach Wilson upright in 2021.

Started this season ranked 22. First 6 games (68.2 rating)
Right Now ranked 8th (of 37) Since week 7 (80.2 rating)
Allowed 3 sacks - Committed 3 Penalties - Rating 74.2 Snaps Played - 799

This is not a position of need but a position of luxury to draft a backup with potential of developing into starter.

The debate of where Mekhi Becton should play is irrelevant he is the starting left tackle until he is not by the coaching staff. George Fant was the starting right tackle that was given the opportunity to fill the void left by Becton's injury to play left side, but as we seen when Fant went down Edoga was able to fill the void. We also have McDermott who is a capable underrated option. The rest of the season will determine the viability of need at this position which as of now there is none. Four of the six tackles under contract next season. Morgan Moses is the only free agent. Isaiah Williams also a free agent. Mekhi Becton is the mainstay with George Fant proving he belongs and will be the right tackle with Chuma Edoga as the swing tackle, Conor McDermott is versatile can play tackle and guard. So the need is right guard, the luxury pick is center.

The next position on offense is tight end. I know people going to gripe about this but no reason to. Kenny Yeboah is the project and will continue to be a special teams player with work to do. Trevon Wesco is our blocking end under contract next season and has upside to the roster. Comes down to who they feel is better Tyler Kroft or Ryan Griffin. Griffin older is more of a well rounded option whereas Kroft is more of that receiver option but has injury prone tagged to his career. Drafting a tight end should be in the cards but the depth chart will be curious on how it plays out. Ryan Griffin is a Joe Douglas guy and should be the option of the current three we have. Draft a tight end to be the number 1, Griffin is 2, Wesco is 3 and Yeboah is 4 moving forward. Re-signing Nick Bawden is a must as well.

Running back is curious situation. Austin Walter has potential was just added to the active roster. La'Mical Perine a power back doesn't fit the style who has basically been inactive all season on the active roster, potential trade chip after this season. Tevin Coleman the veteran running back fits and has proven his value thus far this season. Michael Carter is RB1 and has proven his value. Ty Johnson shows he is capable option, under contract next season. Opens the door for a luxury selection, this team likes to carry 4 RBs. So if Tevin is re-signed on a 1 year deal then no need to draft a prospect because Walter is a RFA with the other two are under contract. But option is open to have MC, Ty and Austin Walter with a draft prospect as the fourth.

Final Offensive position that is a need is wide receiver. Regardless on whether Denzel Mims is a part of the future he is under contract until they move him. Corey Davis was signed to be one part of the solution. Braxton Berrios his role is return specialist but has earned more offensive snaps and should be re-signed after this season. Jeff Smith is expendable but is also affordable as he is an ERFA. Jamison Crowder took a pay cut to stay in New York, he may consider re-signing on a one year deal after this season but looks like he is the expendable option moving forward. Elijah Moore has proven his stock from a 2nd round selection to Number 1 receiver on the depth chart. Moving forward Elijah Moore, Corey Davis and the need of an interchangeable slot/wideout to create match ups with Moore is needed. Denzel Mims is basically the role player for the number 2 receiver position on offense. There are a couple of first round talents that could be sought after here.

First Round: Two options at Guard:
  • Ikem Ekwonu, NC State
  • Zion Johnson, Boston College
First Round: Two options at Wide Receiver:
  • Jahan Dotson, Penn State
  • Jameson Williams, Alabama
Second Round: Two options at Tight End:
  • Trey McBride, Colorado State
  • Jalen Wydermyer, TE, Texas A&M
These are the need positions on offense and people can debate otherwise but above are 6 prospects that would fill NEEDS on offense.

As for the luxury picks:

Third Round: Two options at Center:
  • Ricky Stromberg, Arkansas
  • James Empey, BYU
Fourth Round: Two options at Running Back:
  • Jerrion Ealy, Ole Miss
  • Cam'Ron Harris Miami
Fourth Round: Two options at Wide Receiver:
  • Zay Flowers, Boston College
  • Jayden Reed, Michigan State
These are the luxury picks if the team feels to move on from said individuals opening that opportunity to fill through the draft. There is no guarantee that Jeff Smith will be back. There is no guarantee the team will be able to re-sign Jamison Crowder or want to. There is no guarantee that Denzel Mims will have a roster spot next year even though two things he is under contract and has mass potential. There is no guarantee the team will be able or want to re-sign Braxton Berrios. So adding a 2nd receiver on day 3 could and should be in the cards. Like I stated above the running back position would be a luxury pick, but another day 3 type move for the front office as it is a position that is a rotating door. At center it is not a need but both are considered late day 2 prospects and both would provide depth and potential for the future at the position. Both also can play guard which bolster the interior of the line.

Thoughts?
Stick to this topic of Offense ONLY!
Zach Wilson is the starter, may offer a tender to Mike Wilson or re-sign Joe Flacco to a one year deal even Josh Johnson has and shown potential as an option no need to draft a backup, well not now at least.

As the old expression goes, if you have four of something, it means you really don't have one. When you only have specialists, who comes into the game tells the other team what you're going to do.
They have been looking for an all purpose tight end who can block and is also a receiving threat for years.
It should be time to get someone to fill that role.

15. NEW YORK JETS
Best-graded: C Connor McGovern | 73.1
Worst-graded: G Greg Van Roten | 63.0
The Jets' offensive line has been a pleasant surprise this season. This unit has been particularly good as a run-blocking line, ranking 10th league-wide with a 78.5 PFF grade in that facet.

In the top half of the league as a unit, draft a Right Guard this unit can be a Top 10 easily.
Figure this team find that road grader to compliment what AVT is on the left side, the run game could be Top 5 easily.

I can't get on board with a 1st rd pick on Guard. i'd rather draft a Center and move McGovern to RG....hopefully improving 2 positions while only drafting (or FA)one player early. Certainly expect JD to add OL on day 2 or 3 to eventually succeed at RG. Would be interesting to see a Tackle go in 1st after they possibly deal Fant for draft capital.

TE really needs attention. A weapon down the middle. jets have plenty of blocking types.

I do feel WR is the wildcard.......lots of names up for leaving via FA or trade. I think Berrios stays as he has value on SP Teams and decent slot backup. With Moore entrenched and Davis signed to decent money, I don't see them going all out to sign a guy....maybe Cole comes back on similar/lesser terms. Wouldn't mind a draft pick to develop on 2nd day. We have a lot of names, but too many question marks. Need answers.

I have no idea why everyone thinks McGovern is such a terrible player . He has his issues but who wouldn’t playing next to a rookie and GVR . I happened to think the guy has done a decent job this year

he has been on an uptick after LDT replaced GVR at RG, also showed improvement couple weeks ago when AVT was had one of his best games... Stats don't lie, dude is not giving up sacks nor getting penalized... Yes like every other player on the roster they are all adjusting to the new game plan and he is leading the way for a continuous successful 21 campaign... Started off rocky but wasn't as bad as the media try to make it...

But it still doesn't mean that if a game-changing center - a true road grader- becomes available they shouldn't add him.
(I'm not sure if that was a double or triple negative.)

late day 2 early day 3 of the draft if they take a center would be then but as a depth option with potential to develop into a starter...

This is the best move considering the cap implications. We could draft the kid from Arkansas and develop him in our system for a yr or two and have a smooth transition. Some fans would blame the world for Zack Wilson struggling instead of acknowledging the simple fact that he’s got a ton to learn before he becomes what this front office envisions .
McGovern is not the problem but just another place holder good enough to get us headed where we need to be.

I noticed a slew of literally rated 3 day prospects being selected in rounds one, and two...
Damone Clark is a raw linebacker that is an effort guy who is putting up the statistics but his overall body of work is not that of say Christian Harris or Nakobe Dean but he is being mocked as such... Not at all upset by that some high character players that can produce on the field should be awarded statue of a higher draft placement...

With that in mind, others are being pushed down the board because of competition, physical attributes, age but same time they are producing at a high level and one of the main positions is center, the other is running back...

both have top tier guys that the media has relished all season long but there are some that on day 2 round 3 would be considered a steal... By the time draft day comes those prospects may climb up the boards just for the one fact of potential...

But players like Stromberg, Empey, Patterson, are being mocked round 3 but literally have just as much potential as Linderbaum or Lindstrom who are at the top of the position class...

statistically he is having a rebound year from last year...
last year pass protection was a dismal 42.7 but his run blocking was 86.8...
this year his pass protection albeit not top tier numbers but major improvement 68.8 and his run blocking has steadily improved over the last couple week hitting numbers in the mid high 80s, to date his run blocking is 79.6 giving him a PFF rating of 74.2 overall...
Last year even though his run blocking was outstanding the pass blocking pulled his overall number down around 64.9 and as you can see his overall is 5 points higher then the end number last year... And the line is improving as a whole which will only continue to improve his numbers...

he is an affordable option, that is rediscovering his value by playing smart heady football and has a line that is improving week to week...
c'mon he is the leader on the OL and they are as a group Top 15th in the league and Top 10th in run blocking, that says something...

I like Ikem Ekwonu NC State, RG as our first 1st Rd pick. I also like taking a TE with our second 2nd Rd pick. I must be one of the rare few who feel that McGovern is more of a liability and would be better off released at the end of the season.

at the end of the season review when all the reports come out you will then see McGovern at the top of the rankings
figure the brilliant offensive mind last year
figure the rookie and elderly guards he had this year
figure in his game improved as when the rookie started to figure shit out
figure in his game improved more when the doctor stepped in at the other guard spot
so next 5 games he has to prove he is the guy that Joe Douglas signed away from Denver and still has potential to anchor the center position for the next few years for us

My ideal Draft would be Ikem Ekwonu and Tyler Linderbaum in the first Rd. This would give the Jets a solid RG and Nick Mangold of the future and leave little doubt about McGovern. I am just not sold on McGovern. I don't see him as a two way Center (Pass blocker and Run Grader). I've watched him in the run game and he has missed numerous blocking assignments. I'm not saying he's supposed to be a Road Grader by any means. He just misses his assigned blocks to open up holes for running backs.

My ideal draft gets me 3-4 long term starters next season and a future 1st or 2nd rounder in 2023 .

Offense play calling getting better and players getting to know it. Main concern is up the middle for protection. A big mean beast anchor at Center! Also a wreaking ball R B that willing to run through walls and make Safeties,CBs shiver once through the O Line. No reason to make this hard and simple to fix in Free Agency and Draft. So Center,RB,TE,WR and see how that works next year and add weak spots then.
