JD Cites Jets' 'Great Flexibility' Heading into '22 Offseason

Some things never change at this time of year in the NFL. For the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas, one of those rocks is the importance of the draft in building and maintaining your team.

"I feel the draft is always the core of consistently good football teams," Douglas said at his end-of-season news conference earlier this week.

But two conditions for the Jets may be reshaping that rock into a little different kind of foundation as the Jets build and grow into 2022.

One is the Jets' "flexibility," which includes a surplus of top draft picks. The Jets have nine selections overall, with the NFL confirming their first-round selections of fourth and 10th overall (with No. 10 from Seattle as part of the Jamal Adams trade) and with their two second-round picks shaping up as Nos. 35 and 38 (with No. 38 from Carolina as part of the Sam Darnold deal).

That word also includes anticipated salary-cap space. Douglas did not put a dollar amount on the Jets' cap room and the number is not official yet. But websites that monitor the cap around the NFL peg the team to be solidly in the top 10 among teams with the greatest cap room heading into free agency beginning in March. During Sunday's Jets-Bills telecast, CBS said the Jets would have the league's fourth-most space under the cap at $60.9 million.

Flexibility is a key element not only to signing unrestricted free agents but also to acquiring players via trades.

"I think we're always going to be aggressive if the right opportunity presents itself," Douglas said. "The good thing is that I think moving forward, we can be in just about any discussion when it comes to player trades."

Yet because most NFL player trades involve draft picks, Douglas was asked if his build-through-the-draft philosophy was changing.

"I think you're constantly evolving," he said, "and there's some core philosophies that don't change but you have to be open to seeing how things are done and maybe adopting certain principles.

"And so, where we are with the assets we have now, we have great flexibility to be aggressive in a lot of different avenues. Those are going to be vital conversations that Coach [Robert Saleh] and I have, along with Christopher [Johnson] and Woody [Johnson], and so, we're excited about this offseason, we're excited about attacking free agency, about attacking the draft, about attacking the combine."

The other condition has been the Jets' recent performance, and Douglas is quite aware of that and of the Jets 4-13 record for their just concluded first season under Saleh and their 6-27 mark in the past two campaigns. And that also seems to be informing his thinking heading into this offseason.

"Look, there needs to be improvement. I think everybody knows that," he said. "We need to be better than four wins, we need to be better than six wins in two years, there's no question about that. So the impetus is on us bringing in the right type of people and winning games, closing games out in the fourth quarter.

"The consistently good teams through the years, they have a core of drafted players and then they supplement through free agency. But again, we're sitting here, and we have a lot of flexibility moving forward. So that's the main thing — improving the win-loss record."

I hope we don’t throw away our draft capital for quick fixes (iron pyrite) because the media is using pressure and scare tactics. Stay the course JD some of us citizens are behind you all the way .

good point......you can find the articles immediately after game ended where the theme was clock is now ticking............those ass clowns are part of the problem. We do demand improvement, but if for reasonable reasons the expected improvement doesn't happen in 2022, we need an owner not react to hair trigger local media who incite the more easily influenced Jet fans. JD and Saleh in no way, shape, or form be on any hotseat in 2022. They have this - by 2023 we need to see the postseason......plain and simple. With 7 teams and yearly turnover of postseason teams, it is more than reasonable to expect it in 2023.

what it means players that are under their rookie deals that for one point or another were signed to the practice squad have completed their 3rd year would become Restricted Free Agents and teams that put original tender or first refusal on any player that Joe Douglas and the coaching staff was eager to get he will be willing to pony those picks for said players...

at the end of the day I don't see them right now sending 1st or 2nd round capitol for any specific player but the door is open...

they are just letting teams and players know they will do whatever it takes to make the team better... more of an advertisement...

those are click bait articles from beat reporters that are trying to make a name for themselves in any way possible...

the scale improvement for this roster already started this year with a specific game plan that all players in question must conform to the ideals of the process they wanted them to play at which this year at times showed limited results but adding pieces this year through free agency and through the draft will maximize those efforts through this off season...

just look at Rex Ryan running his mouth against Robert Saleh...
not too soon after his tune on air changed after admitting contacting our Head Coach...

People don't understand that Saleh has a plan, please believe me when I say you will be ecstatic when the production in year two improves and year three it sky rockets...

the way that JD has positioned the team gives me goosebumps. i feel like we are about to have a 90's Cowboys run that keeps going.

But we’re going to have to be patient. We’re probably going to have a season next year somewhat like what Miami had this year .

Totally... in the sense of us looking somewhat like we did to end this season at the beginning of next season. after the bye, it would not shock me to see us have one of the best post-bye records in the league.

from what talked with some people they expect us to control the line of scrimmage next year...
have one of the best run games
and have one of the best run defenses

in a passing league
we will only go as far as the QB will take us NOT a knock on Zach
our secondary is improving but what happens with the back part of the front seven will determine where we are in pass defense

Patience IS the key. Let this one play out, these guys have the right approach. To listen to the JD/Saleh presser the day after the season, you could hear asshole questions trying to get headline material. People like Cimini, Hughes and Costello have been around this team enough to know the difference between real professionals and the Idzik/Maccagnan/Gase's of the world, yet they still ask shit questions meant to trip these guys up. Sorry for the rant.

I don't understand the blind confidence behind JD. 6-27 is nothing to get excited over. Maybe it's Macc's fault, and Idzik's fault, and Tannenbaum's fault. *rolls eyes*

So in the 90's, Parcells took over a Jets team that mortgaged it's future on crappy FA's and took a 1-15 team to 9-7 and then 12-4. JD took a 7-9 team and turned it into a 6-27 team. Stop drinking the Kool Aid everyone. I want JD to succeed because he's our GM. But he hasn't done a good job so far.

no, he hasn't done a good job...HE'S DONE AN AMAZING JOB!!!

the record is what the record is, but look at (1.) our Dead Money Issues- GONE. (2.) Kool Aid Overpaid FA's - GONE. (3.) Stock pile of top draft picks.

JD's job was to get us out of $$$ Hell, and to add draft picks...he has righted the franchise in those regards; not an easy task.
we could have gone one of two directions. the first being what others did and sell picks for 1 player and overpay FA's to play for a losing team. the second, his direction, get the ship righted for sustainable success.

c'mon it is hard when you are thrusted into a scenario with a roster of overpaid veteran players and at the time a HC who was the real reason those overpaid veterans were given those contracts...

instead of sitting back and letting Mac give those contracts out he could of put a magnet on his nose and looked straight into ownership and stated those players I don't want...

he had no problem after the fact to use those signings to get Mac fired...

now with a group of players on the roster and a head strung coach who convinced ownership to hire his friend then ultimately be fired by his friend...

yet you complaining, that don't drink the kool aid are you kidding me, this roster was no where near a competitive roster and those wins in Gase's first season was due to players who banded together and after that season some of them were thrown to the curb by the then Brilliant Offensive Mind Adam Gase...

now with a competent coaching staff, a plan in place to build from the ground up something fans have been wanting for years... now that it is happening you are complaining that it is his fault for the 2-14 season, give me a fucking break...

@innocenti, laugh at me all that you'd like...for now ;)

But after this offseason, do me the courtesy of letting me know that i might have had a point when you see the additions we make this offseason. additions we were able to make, because of his use of player trades, and making low risk/quick termination FA signings.

The man is a genius!

JD wasn't thrusted into anything. He made a choice. And I suppose that he didn't make that choice thinking he would go 6-27. I think most competent professionals wouldn't put themselves in this kind of a situation in any profession if they didn't think they could turn it around quickly.

It is his fault since it happened under his watch. I want JD to succeed as much as you do. But 6-27 is still 6-27. We'll see what happens next season. But there isn't a lot to be optimistic about.

Zack Wilson improved late in the season to get the 31st best QB rating. The bright spots are that he's as bad as Trevor Lawrence right now and may have surpassed the practice squad QB. We had the second most or most ints this past season.

Michael Carter...and I actually like him. But he had a whopping 639 yards. Defense, we didn't have a player with more than 6.5 sacks or 2 ints. Kicking game was atrocious for much of the season. We went through 2 punters. Berrios is good. There's not a lot of bright spots on this team and it's not Macc's fault.

Stop eating do sh and pretending that it's caviar.
