At least he gave it a shot . It’s not as easy as it looks . Football when it’s all said and done is still and will always be about blocking and tackling. Running fast and jumping high gets people fired on a yearly basis .

Agreed! his problem was in seeing talent; he did. his problem was weighing where to select that talent.
in fairness, Jacobs is a back most would love to have, and Ruggs was a WR most would love, and at the time Farrell was a 1st round grade; just not 5th overall.

He loved the Clemson program and it’s players to a fault . I don’t blame him for taking a player he liked and thought was a fit where ever he took them . He shot his shot and it ricochet right back at him .

The problem with evaluating Mayock is that Gruden had a big say, and perhaps the final say in who got selected and when.

that makes sense...Mayock, on the Network as an analyst, was very measured. Farrell as high as he was or even Leatherwood as high he was didn't seem to be of his doing. Gruden, OTOH, seemed like an impulse buyer.

tough to gauge Mayock since Gruden had final say and he has a terrible draft record......so it's conceivable Mayock wasn't in agreement on the busts in early rounds. Maybe Gruden relented on the later rounds where he can't read his favorite article of the day on draft advice......Mayock found some late round gems.....but he was Gruden's yes man so once he was done Mayock had little chance to stick...too much unknown to rely upon. Buh-bye

He got all shitty with the GM in SF when he was there. Not the easiest guy to work with . If he is both GM and HC…. He can get shitty with himself
