Matt Cavanaugh will not return to Jets in 2022

Matt Cavanaugh, who held the title of senior offensive assistant, will not be returning to the Jets in 2022, per source. Cavanaugh was hired in August to replace the late Greg Knapp. His primary focus was the QBs. It’s an important job, tied to Zach Wilson’s development.

I stated the rift during the season, reason why they hired his personal QB coach
this is just the end result, there is no denying that Zach didn't listen to Cavanaugh as much as they tried to pretend in press conferences

And Mike Rutenberg is DC. This years format is supposed to help promote assistant coaches for hopeful future coordinator positions and will also include coaches from HBCU's to give them exposure to the NFL brass and hopefully lead to future hirings.
But I'm curious about next season. Will Beck be rehired as QB coach and if so, where does that leave Calabrese.

it also works well for us if someone like LaFleur is hired away after next year or the year after we can promote within to keep the same structure moving forward...

That's always a positive. I think a Good HC keeps multiple assistants involved for just that scenario

I think Calabrese is perfect ideal replacement for OC if that time comes
I think nowadays we need that sub HC because of Covid and believe Middleton is that guy
Still chatting to see if Beck is coming back or like end of last season when Wilson finally bought into the game plan do they need someone to be here, to me I doubt it but door is open

It sounds like Cavanaugh was a move they felt they had to make after the accident. But he never meshed with Wilson.

On the other hand, it does sound like Wilson began to work better with LaFleur and Calabrese as the season progressed. How much did that coincide with the arrival of Beck?

I don't see any chance Calabrese goes anywhere. He may be the heir apparent at OC if LaFleur is lured away, and Wilson definitely began meshing better with him.

What I think is most likely is that LaFleur and Calabrese maintain their current roles, and Beck steps more officially into the role Cavanaugh held.

i wondered that about Beck... do you think his career goes the route of a coach for a team and progresses to OC eventually, or will he go back to being a coach for multiple prospects like he was doing?

reduces direct scrutiny as well.......even in the Jets case Cavanaugh is a scape goat

Cavaunaugh was only here for 1 season. To mentor Zach after Knapps passing. Was never supposed to return next season.
