The Colts appear ready to cut bait on quarterback Carson Wentz.

Wentz will probably be traded or released by March 18, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

The reason March 18 is significant is that Wentz’s contract calls for his full $22 million base salary to be guaranteed, and for him to receive a $6.29 million roster bonus, if he’s still on the roster on March 18. If Wentz is released before then, the Colts are still on the hook for $15 million of his base salary, but they’d be off the hook for the other $13.29 million.

Trading Wentz to a team willing to take on his full contract as-is would be the ideal choice for the Colts, but it seems unlikely that any team is going to give anything up to take on a contract that the Colts don’t want. It is possible that Wentz, the Colts and another team could all agree to a re-worked contract that makes it easier for him to be traded.

The Colts gave up their first-round pick in this year’s draft and a third-round pick last year for Wentz. Obviously they wouldn’t have done that if they had thought Wentz would be one-and-done, but given his disastrous play at the end of the season as the Colts were knocked out of playoff contention, it’s unsurprising that the team has apparently decided to move on.

I just don't know how it all went so wrong for the kid.......was by most accounts leading the MVP race when he got hurt with the Eagles and it's been downhill since. I don't think he was ever particularly well-schooled in reading NFL defenses and maybe some mobility that gave him the ability to ad lib plays is not there as much. Lack of winning from the pocket ability taking over I guess.

college career was hyped by media
it all went to his head and he believed the press clippings to where he believed he was the shit nizzle but in reality he was never groomed properly and when he got hurt that guy stepped in and became the hero, never the same after that...

I was surprised the Colts gave as much as they did for him in the 1st place. His value wasn't that high after you took into consideration his lofty contract. I thought that maybe it was a dug deal and the Eagles would return the favor sometime in the future. Outside of that, the trade didn't make a lot of sense.

A lot will depend on whether any team is willing to take on the cap, and what they would want for it. This could be like the Osweiler trade, where a team takes the contract but lands a high pick as compensation.

Think Wentz and a 3rd to some team with cap room for a 7th or something. It all depends on how much a team is willing to absorb the cap hit, and how much the Colts value dumping that cap number.

A cut is more likely, but such a trade is possible, I suppose.

if the Colts find a trade partner they literally will have no dead loss in a post June 1st trade...
if the Colts simply cut Wentz the dead loss is $15 M and they would need to do it before March 19th when his guarantee of $7 M goes into affect...

the trade or release is simply a financial one long term, that means the Colts are eyeing a prospect hearing it is Matt Coral, Ole Miss some say they also like Carson Strong from Nevada...

I could see that. The problem is, they would have to trade up to get Corral, and they don't have the draft capital to do it. No first this year. The Jets would have been a good landing spot for such a trade, as they are one pick before Washington who could target Corral. But without the draft capital, I'm not sure how it would work.

Of course, if they want to include Quenton Nelson (I know it won't happen, but I could dream)...

actually not really...
so far teams have quietly slip on their intentions for QBs without actually saying much...

Pittsburgh likes Malik Willis but they will need to move up to get him, especially in front of Carolina
Carolina's backup option if Willis is gone is Kenny Pickett but they feel like I do, Pickett may fall out of the first round
Saints like Sam Howell a lot but to secure his services they would need to jump in front of the Commanders
Commanders like three QBs right now; Sam Howell, Carson Strong, and Desmond Ridder
Now the Colts have their 47th overall pick plus next years 1st could move up into the mid 20s where Corral is slated to go.

a team that fleeced the Colts with the 19th pick might be open for business to secure another 1st & 3rd next year along with a 2nd this year which should be enough for them to secure their guy... just saying...

So the more likely dance partner for the Jets could be the Saints?

Steelers and Saints
Both Mike Tomlin and Mickey Loomis were both talking to Joe Douglas at the Senior Bowl and it was not hi how you doing conversation, more than 15 minutes each...

Steelers to 4 makes sense
Saints to 10 also makes sense
Jets then have 18 (N.O.) & 20 (Pitt) which is better for the team to either double down or pluck their favorite guys without any recourse from fans and media
