Crowded back field one entering final year - trade bait?

Ty Johnson found himself falling down the depth chart by the end of the season and would be a trade candidate for a team in need of a solid running back. He’s very inexpensive, still young and can catch out of the backfield, though h struggled with drops in 2021. If the Jets are content with Michael Carter as their primary starter with one or two veterans behind him, Johnson could fetch a late-round pick.

We know Michael Carter is the future lead back. We also know even though he wasn't a dominate force he was versatile not just a RB but KR in Tevin Coleman. Players like 49ers Jeff Wilson Jr. the Jets tried to poach prior to the season but now he is a free agent and would compliment the backfield but would force one maybe two out of the rotation.

Ty Johnson affordable trade piece that teams would like to acquire for a late round 3 day pick?

I like Ty . I think he’s like Berrios, the type of player that out of nowhere helps you win a very important game. I am hoping he stays .

Outside of Michael Carter, there's is no RB on the roster that can be considered 'trade bait'. If the team drafts another RB or two...and Johnson gets cut then so be it.

good thing you don't work for an NFL team then the Jets would get no draft capitol return...

not every player on the roster is worthless and there is always teams that will surrender day three picks for affordable contracts with potential...

that is a valid point, but when Ty gets released by the Kitties, and we pick him up only to surrender snaps because of drops, missed blocking assignments, etc., then his price tag goes down precipitously, right?

if you were a GM & HC tandem who had the mindset to (for example) go after a slew of DB's in the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds because you saw a fit in your system to warrant some tire kicking, would you let go of a 5th, 6th, or 7th rounder to get a RB who will probably sink in your offense as well? it's already happened twice.

clean out the RB room and draft a combo of Ealy, Badie, and/or Pearce. Let MC1 & TC teach them the ropes, and we can be set for 4 years at RB.

Johnson did not receive an invitation to the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. Johnson impressed 29 scouts by running a 40-yard dash time clocked by most scouts as anywhere between 4.3 and 4.4 seconds, with one scout reportedly timing Johnson as fast as 4.26 seconds. For comparison, the fastest 40-yard dash time ran by any running back at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine was 4.40 seconds by Justice Hill of the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Johnson was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the sixth-round (186th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. On October 1, 2020, Johnson was waived by the Lions in attempt to place him on their practice squad. But on October 2, 2020, Johnson was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. There were 17 waiver claims put on him but Jets had the highest waiver claim and was awarded his services.

Jets' Ty Johnson: Tops 600 scrimmage yards in 2021
Johnson finished the 2021 season with 61 carries for 238 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games. He added 34 catches for 372 yards and two touchdowns on 55 targets. Johnson handled himself adequately while bouncing up and down the depth chart in the Jets backfield.

Teams looking for a sold number 2 RB on his rookie deal maybe willing to part with a 6th round pick!

To speak about another guy drafted by us in the 4th round in La'Mical Perine stock has hit rock bottom but hearing two teams may give a conditional 2023 7th round for his services just because he still has two years on his rookie deal... One team is the Bengals, they love their Perines... The other team is Baltimore Ravens who has some rough times with a lot of injuries at the RB position this year...

this kid had success in Dan Mullen's offense at UF, which ignores the running game in large swaths of games... and he did it against Bama, GA, MISS ST., LSU. i bet there are scouts and GM's with long memories who would cough up some draft capital for him.

he plays bigger than he is, and faster than his times. he's a steal for a 7th.

Seriously?

Oh yeah, my judgement is so bad that if the Jets listened to me they'd they'd win about 3 games a season unlike their performance under the competent geniuses that are running the team right now *sarcasm because they are already winning about 3 games a season*

Ty Johnson was drafted in the 6th round Throughout his career, Ty Johnson has averaged just under 30 total yards/game. Since he's played 3 seasons, he's already shown his lack of potential.

Ty Johnson was waived by the talent rich Detroit Lions after one season. Yet somehow he has trade value.

Since you can get a player like Ty Johnson off of waivers (in fact the Jets did get him off of waivers) or as an UDFA, he's not worth a 6th rounder. In fact, he's not even worth any draft pick. What could you trade him for, a blocking sled?

Even if you were to get a 7th round pick for him, do you think it would make a world of difference for the Jets? And if you were to answer that question by saying, "possibly" (and I agree that a 7th round pick has a little bit of potential) then my response would be that spending a 7th round pick for Ty Johnson would not make a world of difference in your team which is exactly why he is worth less than a 7th round pick.

I say, keep him on the roster, let him compete for a spot, and see if the coaches can make him into a better player. Regardless of whether or not the Jets can trade Ty Johnson, they're going to pick up at least two backs in the offseason (and I know that I didn't say this in the previous but I thought that was implicit). <------Do you really have a problem with this idea?

I just don't see the room for him and he does not qualify for the practice squad even with the new rules...
is he a capable role player, yes
why?
he can return kicks
he can run, catch n run
is he a burner, yes
are teams looking for those type of backs, yes
regardless of where he was drafted, teams like proven commodities and would offer a day 3 pick even if it is a conditional pick in 2023

That's just it, he's proven himself to have little potential and less value than a 7th rounder.

a back that can produce over 500 yards from the line of scrimmage could be sold for a conditional 6th but of course it would be in 2023 conditions probably on snap count or snap count %, could receive a straight up pick or can be used to maneuver a current pick...

lets say a team wants him so Joe Douglas offers 2023 7th round pick with Ty Johnson to get a 2022 6th round pick he has already done this with lesser talent...
