Something to Watch: Could the JD Create More Cap $$$

Could the Jets restructure both CJ Mosley and Sheldon Rankins deals this offseason, converting Mosley's 16 mill dollar base salary into as mostly a bonus to create even more cap space and same with Rankins 4.5 mill dollar base salary.

Is a long shot but if there is free agents that the team wants to sign they would need to do something drastic. Sheldon Rankins is not likely to be a cap casualty as some Jets fans believe. End of the day, the team is sticking to their plan but with the abundance of potential available in free agency the team has to consider every option?

Thoughts?

See if they both will take a pay cut.
it is not a pay-cut it is restructuring how the money is paid out to help the cap number, problem with CJ Mosley if you restructure his deal he will likely demand that some of his 2023 salary be prorated/guaranteed and right now it is not opening for the team after 2022 to release him...

and then we will have less money this off season to work with... minus draft picks we would only have $17-22 M after the dead loss creeps in and realization of the cost of our prospects that we will draft, but okay cut them both...

On top of which we'd have to replace them both with players of equal skill or suffer the deficiencies.

Okay I might have went overboard a bit mostly because I got the hots for Lloyd the Ute linebacker. This draft has so many players that could be of immediate help to this team both on offense and defense it’s unbelievable. And even though we have 4 picks in the top 38, I want more . We have to keep Mosley but we don’t have to or need to keep Rankins .

I believe Saleh has the hots for Troy Anderson from Montana State...
As most of the media and some Jets beat writers have the hots for Chad Muma from Wyoming...
We get anyone of the three we win... Long term win...

Athletic, good size and smart, Anderson seems to be a great fit at LB in Saleh's defense. Wouldn't surprise me if we grab him in 3rd round, if still available.

we, every team, need to have some veteran leadership to be successful. someone to make the young guys believe in themselves and the system. If either of these guys is that guy, then they need to stay.

if there is a way to restructure them to save us money, then do it. this is the kind of thing that smart teams do

Rankins may take a pay cut. Mosley wont. Mosley per gmf1369 would restructure into a bonus and save us money.

which in effect would be a pay cut on paper, right? give his his base as a bonus, but extend the term? thus, spreading the bonus over several years but only hitting our books for this year with minimum's for the next couple as dead money if he's indeed released?

however, that makes him extremely tradeable too after this year... or as a nice chip to a contender this year who has a hole at LB because of injury. although we might be playoff contenders too; one never knows?

PS... I see it a bit differently. I see CJ doing the bonus and extension, but not Rankins.

CJ knows he has a job elsewhere if it came to it, and with the high level of play he displayed, he could get a nice pay day.
to do this will look like a team player seeking a winning team.

Rank didn't have a great season, and already being on a kick the tires contract, a pay cut could be looked at by his people as putting a cap on a future deal.
to do this might look like a vet past his prime trying to stay in the league.

Cutting Mosley would free -3mil in cap space. Not a wise move capwise but the team could probably get away with it. They're not going to do it seeing that Mosley is a captain.

You're correct That's not going to happen. He's the heart of this defense and arguably the best player there considering that.
