New York Jets Defensive Mindset NFL Draft

So start with the secondary the Jets are loaded at safety, starters to role players and even a couple of developmental players making this position not a NEED. not to mention signing a safety in Jordan Whitehead who looks to claim one of the starting roles. also the corners on this roster have depth and starting qualities maybe not all fans agree but the value is there. signing of DJ Reed looks to garner one starting role. Michael Carter II looks to be the man at nickel role leaving questions is Bryce Hall a starter and if not, who? this could be another position that is not a NEED.

rumors questioned early about the linebacker group, that were cemented by some press conferences that CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams lead the backers heading into 2022. two former college safeties drafted and converted to safety are expected to have bigger roles next season with Jamien Sherwood to be the middle "MIKE" role with both Williams and Mosley. there is some thought that the Jets could go a similar route to 2021 draft by drafting a safety or two and convert them to linebacker one name to watch out is Miami (OH) safety Sterling Weatherford who already has been noted through the Jets senior bowl roster listed as a LB. don't expect too many draft picks used for this position group. there is a notion that the Jets like Leo Chenal and his above board athleticism.

on defense the main situation was the rotation established on the defensive line. a lot of miss placed talent to a new scheme that had fans wondering who will be safe and who will be gone this free agency. Foley Fatukais a known run defender is gone and to this point only edge rusher Jacob Martin who is considered a lighter defensive end has been brought in. the Jets are likely to run a two formation based defensive front. 4-3 under and Wide 9. Carl Lawson is expected to be a part of training camp. Jacob Martin the new guy will have a role in the Wide 9 defensive front but what about 4-3 under, probably not. questions on where JFM will play is still unknown but his edge defensive end role can be solved during the draft. what is expected? the expectation is that EDGE won't be a top first round selection unless one player is available, but there is also talk about trade flexibility with one or both top picks. EDGE prospects both could be considered early day 2 gets in Minnesota's Boye Mafe and Penn Stat's DE/LB who was listed as EDGE DE for the senior bowl Jessie Luketa who out played what was expected he could do. the real question right now is JFM, Lawson, and Q. are three 4-3 under starters. Jacob Martin is the Wide 9 DE, so wouldn't addressing the IDL be a top of the team's list. Could a Jordan Davis be that guy, what about Devonte Wyatt or Perrion Winfrey? Maybe even Travis Jones from UConn. These position groups should be interesting to watch how it plays out on day one and day two of the NFL Draft.

The write-up in the prospect lists seem to say the opposite. They like his aggressiveness, but
" He doesn't have a lot of mobility and fluidity to turn and run with tight ends, the lateral quickness to attack backs in coverage, or the anticipation to play in zone. He’s produced next to zero ball production throughout the course of his collegiate career with just one interception and one pass defensed.
He’s tightly wound through the hips and therefore struggles to drive and produce suddenness when needing to stick his foot in the ground and redirect."
What do they see as "athletic"?

Chenal plays with low pads in gap shooting instances and is a low tackler who does well to hit with both leverage and coil. That said, he doesn’t show a lot of mobility in rotational reps, meaning his ability to flip open and get depth is modest at best and his dynamic ability in space is hindered. I do wonder how much athleticism could be unlocked with a bit of redistribution of mass on his frame. Chenal is a big, powerful, and built-up player but likely could lean down and maintain much of that hitting power but free himself to move cleaner.

You’re not going to want to test his sideline-to-sideline range, but if you ask him to play between the tackles, you’re going to get a heavy hitter. I appreciated some of his reps to anticipate and shoot a gap on stretch concepts—although he was effective here when leveraged as the play side linebacker and when he attempted to assertively claim a gap scraping behind the back, he’d duck under a lineman and lack the burst to realign and accelerate to the ball. This is a stout tackler in traffic, too. He’s done well to keep ball-carriers in the grasp while being leaned on.

An absolute jackhammer. He’s a blast to watch smash into lead blockers and pullers, or kick-out blocks, or ball-carriers, or quarterbacks. He’s relentless in pursuit and even when he busts his contain and leverage, he is quick to rally and continue to the ball. He’s got a lot of power and plays with the mentality of looking to dictate reps, even when catching offensive linemen trying to climb to him.

His ability to key and process back action out of the backfield as his primary read is consistent and helps him build momentum into his challenges and work into the line of scrimmage to play with the kind of big power he creates. I appreciate his effort in navigating the point of attack and ducking under blocks as the play side stack linebacker as well. His vision and feel for turning his back to the quarterback or playing zone coverage in space are not as strong.

Jets has so many holes on both sides its crazy. But Im a Defense guy who likes to see QBs get smashed, pressured into bad decisions. Team with great Defense and good QB that can move will win. 49ers is that team that needs that little bit better QB and then Super Bowl. Im hoping Jets can be that smash mouth Defensive team and Wilson making things happen.

all I will say is that right now is not the time to start believing articles that claim they know what JD is going to do......he doesn't drop hints......he doesn't have leaks.........it's smokescreen season and anything you hear about a position they like could be all about enticing a trade just as much as picking a player.

It may be DL or OL, but I've been hearing from everyone here it's either going to be DE, CB, S, Edge, WR, LT, RT, C, WR. Did I miss anyone?

One mock I saw (USA Today?) predicted the Jets will trade both first round picks to Detroit for the #2 pick in the draft (plus Detroit's early 2nd round pick, and then take Ekwonu.
So much for that other story saying the Jets want a DE.
Why waste draft capital? If current mocks hold true, if Ekwonu isn't available at #4, Neal probably will be. Or one of the top two edge rushers,
But it all may hinge on Becton's health.

Penning is definitely there at 10... so if Ickey is who JD is clamoring for, but he's gone at by our 4th pick, then take the best DE, and get Penning at 10.

this keeps your 2 picks, and the 2 picks in round 2 intact.

I wouldn't hate this if they have doubts about Becton.

i would do that even if they thought Becton was Anthony Munoz. we don't sack enough, and we get sacked too much.
if JD corrects those 2 aspects by the time Sept rolls around, tell Cinderella to cough up the slippers... the Jets have a pumpkin to catch.

If it were up to me I would take Jermaine Johnson at 4 and Jordan Davis at 10 and fix my front 7 . And to be honest I would use the 35th pick on a receiver, the 38th on the OT from Ohio State and the 3rd round pick on a center either Cade Mays or Cole Strange.

i love that idea too, and i have mocked something similar. but as you have reservations for Travon, i have some, albeit different ones, for Jermaine.

then in the second, you can get Darian Kinard or Sean Rhyan or Tyler Smith at RT.

Difference is JJ went to FSU and blew the doors off. Then he went to the Senior Bowl and did the same thing in practice just to prove that he could . Truth be told I would take either one of them. I just don’t want Thibs because he’s a pass rusher only

Neither do I for the same reason. As I've posted before, I saw him look like he didn't care on running plays and he was easily blocked by two no-name tackles in some passing situations (he lined up on both sides). It looked like of he didn't have a good shot at a sack, he didn't have an interest in the play.
