IMO, he should do it everyday and twice on Sunday. unless he and his agent are extremely tone deaf, they have to sense the "reality of the perception" of how to grade Becton thus far (not saying it is fair). So, if he allows Fant to play LT for us this year, he is really:

1.) going to RT to maul people for a living on national TV, and is highlight reels every sunday boosting his stock for his next contract.
2.) proving he is a team player by taking a backseat to an inferior LT, bc said LT is only good at LT...boosting his stock for the next contract.

I look at it like this we drafted Becton and signed Fant gave both the chance to win the LT starting role. Went to Becton, Fant had a good year at LT but his role should be starting RT just remember they drafted a developmental right tackle not as insurance for Becton, but for the older cat. If the plan was to re-sign Fant who media has been waiting to agree to an extension is playing stupid ball with the team. He is looking for max dollars meaning if he wins the LT job will be seeking $18 M annual. Not mistaken but team offered him a competitive contract with incentives if he wins or starts any games at LT but he declined it.

Becton looks great, attitude is positive and is ready to take his job back. The real question do we lose Fant in free agency after the season? Because both sides are extremely far a part on contract negotiations but that can change any time.

i think you're on the money with Max. he is the heir apparent to RT... if not this season, then next.

but if i am JD, i am signing Fant to a 5 year deal for LT money, and let him start the year there (LT).

Mount Becton does look good, and can switch to LT any time...especially after JD moves Fant for a King's ransom when a LT on another team goes down and that LT's team comes calling for a quality LT who is already under contract.

if it happens after Fant is a part of a great OLine this year, or during the year, JD has positioned us to reap the rewards of a great signing he made 2 years ago if he can get a deal done... if a deal doesn't get reached, i think Fant is gone before the season starts.

Like you mentioned months ago, I think you have to trade Fant.

He was selected as an Associated Press All American, a 1st Team Pro Football Focus All American, and Walter Camp also honored Mitchell as an All-American (2nd team).

Also, according to Max himself, he topped out at around 320 and and is having difficulty getting above that number. As a senior, he was lighter. He can't be a mauler at 320. The stats you post are positives for an LT. But I'm more interested in the success of the running game off of RT.

no arguments from me! he walks, talks, and quacks like a LT.

just pointing out he's an interesting prospect as most LT's in college switch to the right when they move the NFL, and most RT's kick inside to guard when they move the NFL. But he really seems like a unicorn who bucks both trends.

If Fant wins the LT job and doesn’t sign a new contract, the Jets can just franchise him next year. He’s going nowhere, if he turns into a probowl LT.
That being said, I’d rather see Bechton win the job, have Fant at RT, hopefully he can adjust and play as well as he did last year.
Groom Mitchell for RT, if he’s got the proper chops for the NFL.

if we did, it wouldn't be for us... it would add to his trade value, because he'd be locked up thru his prime for another team.
if we keep him, it's for 3 with everything guaranteed in two; aka, the "JD Special".

I still think it would be a mistake to lock him up for 5 years unless you already have a trade in place. Unless you want to package him with others or picks or both for say Orlando Brown of KC.

one said he had a minor fix/scope- fully intends to be ready for a great camp.
one had major work and rehab- fully expects to be ready for a great camp.

they are both going to play double digit games in our double digit win season.
