If he is traded or retires, Packers will have to eat 40 million in cap. Either this season or spread over 2 seasons if retirement comes post june 1.
If he stays, they owe him $59 million this season.
Plus whatever dead cap accrues net off season.
So they save a minimum of $19 mill this year and up to 39 mill via trade or retirement .
Timeline has nothing to do with it. Hate to break this to ya, but this Team is not one player away from a Super Bowl, even if that player is Rodgers. Time somebody said it, but its the truth. One Season of Rodgers. Maybe 2. For how much? Behind this O-Line? No. They are strapped for cap space, got about 16 mil or so now. Yeah I heard 10mil additional when they trade or cut Zachs favorite WR. Not exactly that enticing is it? Hope I'm wrong but this has D-E-B-A-C-L-E written all over it. Think about it from an objective standpoint and you will see what I'm talking about.

Great post. I said about as much last week. How many of these "can't miss" moments have we seen turn into dumpster fires over the decades? Exactly. This one is no different.

I agree. We finally have a young core to build around. They swung and missed at QB but hit on all the other guys they drafted. Instead of admitting that Zach is not it they think Rodgers will bring out what is simply not there.
Instead of being patient and "changing the culture" as they put it, they go back to the "quick fix" bullshit that never works and sets the Franchise back to square one.
What really makes me Laugh is that you have Jet Fans like me, who have seen this before, are on board with this recurring nonsense. Makes as much sense as Zach being able to be "coached up."

They get $10MM in space from Davis, a similar number from Lawson, they can restructure CJ. Tons of space available. And no, I don't care about cutting Zach's favorite injury-prone drop machine.
They had a top defense last year. Acting like Rodgers would be joining the Maccagnan Jets is just wrong. This roster is FAR more stocked than previous Jets teams.
I would imagine Douglas will make sure the Jets are protected in the trade from Rodgers playing one season and retiring. The second pick will be conditional, either on the performance of the first season or on his being on the roster in the second.
