The Jets MUST land a QB EARLY in FA

Like Foles or not, we cannot sit on our hands hoping that Mariota falls to us setting up the scenario for this blockbuster trade with the Eagles everyone is talking about. Even if Mariota does fall to us, there is no guarantee that the Eagles pull the trigger and are actually willing to make such a trade (and that the trade would incluse Foles). An argument could be made that the Jets could always pick Mariota. While this is true (assuming they like him), if they did pick him I don't believe that they will (or should) plug him in as a starter in year one. So that still leaves us with Geno as our only viable option for the coming season.


That is unacceptable. If we haven't landed a FA QB or traded for a QB before draft day we could find ourselves left out in the cold. The best FA options out there are not great this year, but nonetheless they will get signed first, leaving the crumbs for the teams who wait. At worst, we need someone who can offer Geno some competition for the position. At best, we require a serviceable QB who can hold the fort until we can come up with a better option (hopefully next year, but that is no looking great either).


My point is this: No doubt Mac and Bowles have identified one or more QB's they want in FA. We cannot wait. We need to be aggressive and pull the trigger sooner rather than later. In addition to CB's being signed early in FA, I would also expect (and hope) a QB. Otherwise we are screwed!

I've read in a few places that the Jets are interested in bringing in Mallett. I would be okay with that move. He and Geno competing will be a good battle.

Who are we moving fast for? Brian Hoyer and Matt Moore?

The Jets aren't getting a QB much better than Geno in FA. There's nobody out there you can say is much better than him. It's a poor FA market for QB's. And I don't see a trade scenario other than maybe Foles. If the Jets move down with Philly, it could happen. But that's still fantasy at this point. I don't believe rumors until they have some real legs, as they say.

He would just be brought in to challenge Geno. I am okay with that move. If we don't draft a QB we will need a viable option to go to if Geno struggles again mid year.

i think mac is waiting to see what the texans do they are heavily favored to land hoyer which means they will either part with fitz or mallet they won't keep both because they also have savage on the roster, so they need to part with one unless they carry 4 qb's but that is exceedingly rare for teams to do.

I would take either mallet or fitz to compete with geno and simms.

if neither o these happens then I would expect us to be in the sweepstakes for matt moore who has ties to kacy rogers as both have been on miami for the last few years.

and to be honest out of all those scenarios i just mentioned the only one i see beating geno out is fitzy.

this sounds great in theory, but who exactly are you hoping for them to sign quickly? it's not like rodgers, brees, wilson or brady are sitting there as free agents. it's mostly have beens and never have beens. i'd be fine with a few like fitz or hoyer or mallet as a stop gap measure and competition for geno and assumedly another QB we draft. but there aren't any sure thing starting QBs out there.

but maybe you have a suggestion...

I have concerns about Mallett, particularly between the ears, but he could be at least as good as Geno. Hoyer, to me, would be an upgrade, and could at least solidify the position. Foles would also be an upgrade, though of course, that would be via trade.

It certainly is slim pickings in the FA QA list this year but there are many teams in need of a QB so I still think these guys will go fast. It is very debatable whether or not any of them would be better than Geno.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider Sanchez. I think Hoyer is the least of all the evils. He was 7-4 last year in Cleveland and I believe that's the best W-L record of the rest of the bunch.

It's usually slim pickings in the FA QB market. How often does a team allow a legit franchise QB walk away in free agency? Seriously. Guys who are legit are either locked up long term or traded to a new team, where they are locked up long term.

I just don't remember big-time franchise QBs on the market that often in previous years.

The plan IMO should be that the Jets hold on to Geno to compete in TC. They're not going to get rid of him when he's under contract. In FA, they should get a savvy veteran. A guy that can win in a pinch and provide great competition for both Geno and any incumbent. In the draft, the Jets should be hoping that Mariota drops to them. If he does, take him and don't hesitate. If the Eagles are willing to give up the house for the 6th pick, then do it. But any deal along those lines MUST get us Nick Foles in the deal. If we go this route, the Eagles should be paying through the nose for this. Marcus Mariota opportunities do not grow on trees. If they really want him that bad, it should involve multiple picks as well. Like 2 1st rounders, a 2nd, and a 3rd.

I honestly think we are not taking a QB in first..I think we could take one later on..but I would think YES a FA signing takes us out of first round discussion..although I don't think it is real now anyway.....does anyone realize..MAriota took 5 that's right 5 snaps behind center this year during games aside from a kneel down.........he is a system guy...and not for us.....and I like the kid......

BTW Kristian Dyer tweeted someone elses saying the Jets getting Brandon Marshall helps the Jets immeasurably in the free agent pursuit of guys.....who wouldn't want to throw to Marshall Decker..and the Kerley....so no one has really talked about that side effect...

They need ammo to talk trade with every pick 1 through 5...Tampa likely takes Winston, but Eagles need to start there and talk to the top 5 picks and see what it would take. I'd trade our 2nd pick for Foles and cross QB off our holes list. Maybe a 2nd and 5 next year that's a four if Foles starts all 16 games. Just give the Eagles their extra ammo now to trade up with whoever gets a deal done.

I don't think this happens until after the draft, though. The Eagles may not get their guy and would probably like to retain Foles as trade ammo with the Jets for instance. Aside from that, I can't see him netting Philly more than a 3rd since everyone knows Kelly wants to unload him. He wouldn't get a very high 2nd from the Jets, I should hope.

I think that's exactly it. No one said Mariota is perfect. We all know he has a big adjustment similar to many QB. Geno was the same issue.

The fact that we have Geno and maybe a FA means there would be no pressure to play Mariota and he can develop slowing. I would love this. I think that is ideal for him.

But with a FA we certainly wouldn't have to take a QB. Could take a guy later and develop him too. We also still have Simms.

Lots of options which is what we need. The more the better. One has to stick you would think.

i can't see the eagles trading foles unless they are guaranteed to land mariota. what if they trade foles, but can't convince someone to drop from top 5 to 20? then they have no QBs
