Scouting Report for Will McDonald IV
Strengths:
Explosive front-seven defender with tremendous upside. Athletic and quickly changes direction. Moves around the field with ease and covers large amounts of area. Stays with assignments, plays with balance, and is rarely off his feet.

Tremendous edge rusher who shows speed up the field and ability in backside pursuit. Plays with excellent lean, quickly gets his hands up, and effectively uses them to protect himself. Often comes out of a three-point stance and plays with great leverage and body control. Stays with assignments and works hard.

Areas of Improvement: Lacks bulk & is easily disrupted from his angle of attack by the initial block. Out-positioned by opponents. Never really developed at Iowa State. May be unable to handle complex defensive schemes.

Conclusion: McDonald is an outstanding athlete who caused a lot of disruption over the past three seasons for the Cyclones’ defense. He possesses the size and explosion to be used as an edge rusher in a 3-4 alignment, but, at the same time, McDonald has enough athleticism to play in space. McDonald comes with great upside, but he’ll need proper coaching and development to fully complete his game.

Analysis: It’s worth wondering if McDonald has much room to add to his frame. At 24 years old, he’ll be one of the older rookies on the circuit. But early on, McDonald can factor into an EDGE rotation as a valuable pass-rushing catalyst. With more refinement and weight room work, he could grow to become a quality starter, with a particular affinity for attacking the quarterback.

Hopefully he is not Aaron Maybin.
This kid played DT a bunch last season which cause his sack totals to dip a little but he was still able to get 6 sacks . May in would run around the edge never touching the OT and try touch his way into a sack. This kid actually takes on linemen and beats them .

Saleh told him that he will get him out of 4i technique and play wide 9. No more DT.

After reading this I see why He was picked. Fits the Saleh mold and they probably think they can "Home grow" him into a stud. Kid has some tools and from what I've seen they could use Him in the Rotation. A quality depth replacement. Where they picked Him? That's my only question.

Is he going to be able to effectively drop into coverage at times?

Strong enough to maintain the edge in th nfl?

I was not happy with this pick as I would have liked OT Harrison. McDonald is no slouch, He is a good addition and may turn out to be our best Edge rusher. I just would have liked Harrison.

He was wearing 99 at rookie camp, which I like. My boy was Gastineau growing up.

By Bill B's screwing us out of an OT, he may have ultimately screwed NE's QB for the next 10 years. I recall GMF saying that JD felt comfortable grabbing an OT in middle rounds. I makes me think that WM may have been the choice all along if he was there at 15, regardless of one of the top 4 OT's availability.
I'm thinking the punk got punked.

Jets put out the OT vibe, even swapped back 2 spots, then drafted the guy they really wanted all along.
Classic JD.
