The Jets have reportedly declined the fifth-year option on offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, as he'll become a free agent in 2024.

But barring a trade for an absolute stud franchise LT, Becton is here this year. And even then, they might hold onto him for RT this year. Really virtually no chance they deal him.

as our resident Oline expert, how do you think becton looks physically?? he's lost 50 something pounds & that couldn't have been easy.. but man, i'm still looking for any of these weight loss photos where he looks fit/strong.. that & his legs look flat out skinny now..

I think he will be fine. No concern about strength. If anything, he might be more suited for LT now. He should have increased mobility while he still has that great length to his kick step. The key components are there. Arm length, extension, stride.

His legs are down some, but I don't see him being susceptible to bull rushes any time soon.

I'm looking at it, and I would think Becton is also, a one year prove it deal. If he gets through most of the season healthy and playing great he will likely get a good deal before the season ends to mitigate the possibility of losing him.

I expected not picking up Becton's option and think it was the correct decision.
He has a year to prove himself, not only to the Jets, but the rest of the league. His option year would have been reasonable at $13.565 million provided he played well and stayed healthy, a big if. Hopefully he does and he becomes the player he was envisioned to be. If so I'd expect to see him get the transition tag in 24 at around $21million, so $8 million more. That would be a great problem to have.
He is currently penciled in as a starter this year, and as thin as we are at starting caliper tackles, let's hope he he finally earns his paycheck.

I heard JD once when asked about his progress say that he was in the weight room every time he was in the building and he was looking extremely good. Gives one hope that he will give us what he was paid to give us this year.
