Could this be the first time the New York Jets are thankful for Bill Belichick in their lives?

When the New England Patriots completed a draft day trade down with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the belief was that they were allowing Pittsburgh the chance to get the offensive tackle the Jets were hoping for (Broderick Jones). In the end, Belichick’s attempt at getting another one over on the Jets might have been the best thing that happened to the franchise.

Instead of taking Jones, general manager Joe Douglas landed on an Iowa St. product in Will McDonald IV. McDonald was seen as a late-first–round pick and not among the top edge rushers in his class.

Through one month at Jets training camp, the draft analysis on him may have been incorrect.
It hasn’t mattered who the young rookie has gone up against, McDonald has excelled at almost every facet to this point in New York. He’s recorded a sack and three quarterback pressures in two preseason games against the Browns and Panthers. His best work has been on the practice field though.

I hope they are right but it's way too soon to tell. Lets see how he does once the real games start. So far he is looking good, lets hope he keeps it up.

The thing is, the Jets weren't targeting Broderick Jones in the first round. There's a pre-draft selection recording of Douglas stating that Jones wouldn't be available because of New England and they were targeting McDonald.

At a quick glance, the news on Jones seems mixed.

to expect that even a first round OT would be the solution to our issues right now at OT is a pipe dream.

O-line needs time to gel, any last second additions/subtractions is going to hurt us (especially with our first 6 games). Ideal situation would have been to have our guys set at the beginning of camp and allow them to develop the necessary cohesion through camp and the preseason.

Thinking we are going to throw (still hurt) lineup out at the last second to come save the line shows a severe lack of planning.

I still think it’s just the curse working against us. No one good was ever available while we needed them. JD brought in the best available, and a lot of them. They all either got hurt or turned to shit. That’s a lot of shit. Belichick could bring in 10 left tackles and they’d all be studs. No curse there yet. But of course when he did that Dante Scarnechia was their line coach and he was the best there ever was.

after watching brady for 25 years, everyone has learned the value of the offensive line. No team is letting a good lineman go unless maybe they ask for too much money and hold out. Today you really need to draft linemen and hold on to them

In four years (four drafts) JD has drafted really one stellar O lineman (AVT). Becton was in his first draft, but has had some freak injuries (I'm not blaming either on them for the injuries. First one was a freak accident and second seemed from rushing back and not taking the proper precautions).

So really four drafts and two good OL players (if we count Becton). For a team that has needed OL help since the retirements of Brick and Mangold, I think we can chalk this up to a complete failure on JD's part.
