Official Game Thread: New York Jets at Dallas Cowboys

The New York Jets (+9.5) at home to open their 2023 NFL season on Monday Night Football. It was a costly victory, as Aaron Rodgers went down with a leg injury on the Jets’ first possession and never returned to the game. A season ending Achilles tendon injury is feared. With Rodgers out indefinitely, the Jets will have to make do with Zach Wilson under center, a prospect few Jets fans look forward to.

Now the Jets prepare for a road game against the Dallas Cowboys (-9.5) on short rest. The Cowboys annihilated the New York Giants (-5.5), 40 - 0 to open their 2023 NFL season last Sunday, and their defense in particular looked unstoppable. This is a formidable Cowboys team with a ton of talent all over the field and few weaknesses. The Cowboys are a legitimate Super Bowl contender, something few would claim for the Jets now that Zach Wilson is under center.

Can the Jets win this game? Sure they can. Road underdogs win games sometimes. Zach Wilson could have an unexpectedly good game. Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson could pull off several big plays resulting in multiple touchdowns. The Jets could get some defensive turnovers, maybe a good return or two. But the Cowboys are an excellent team that looked like a juggernaut against the New York Giants last Sunday. They’re almost certainly better than the Jets with Zach Wilson under center. A road win here is always possible. But that’s not the way to bet.

Let's hope they watched the Giants tape and saw Parsons jumping the gaps up the middle. No stupid empty sets, put Bawden in to meet Parsons or use a TE to trap him. Then let Zach air it out occasionally to loosen the defense, Garrett can make some of those plays and a deep interception is less damaging than one on a quick out or screen.

Cowboys struggle vs the run. Run it down their throats. Izzy needs to be active. Cook looked bad, but he is recovering from injury so let's see how he looks in a couple weeks. Bawden needs to crush Parsons. Negate their speed with a run game and this OL is built to run block which is easier than pass block. It's not going to be pretty, but it can still win in todays game.

Everyone will show up and do what needs to be done but will the oline and Zach do their part? Just keep the game close and don't get embarrassed and that is a super step in itself. Something to take into the next week against the Patriots at home for the victory.

What would be nice is for this team to live up to expectations. Do more if you have to. I'm tired of this organization using Zach as the excuse. Y'all drafted him. If he can't play then find someone that can or lose your job. And if this defense is truly elite then they can win the game. Ravens did it with Dilfer. Jets did it with Sanchez. Jets can do it with Zach.
