In return, Jets fans in particular hate all coaches. I guarantee if the Jets fired Saleh, it would take one incompletion on the first drive of the first preseason game for the fan base to go nuts and want people fired. Been here almost a half century. Seen it every time.

Absolutely agreed. However, judging solely by record in the short term only furthers the necessity for a front office to think solely in the short term. Now some argue that there is no long term in the NFL, but when you inherit a bare cupboard, short-term solutions aren't solutions at all.
I guess I feel like 5 years is not short term. He swung for the fences with Becton it failed. He swung for the fences with Zach it failed. And he swung for the fences with Rodgers and it was a colossal failure and it was his fault for the bad trade and having no plan for backup. Sometimes things just don't work out well. I felt like he was doing things the right way and doing it through the draft, but then he overestimated his roster and missed.
We have no idea if Rodgers was a colossal failure yet or not. It was for this season, but I don't know if anyone could have predicted his season would end in four plays.
More misses than hits. Two wasted drafts. I just feel like he has to be held responsible for this mess. They do not need to extend him and it's deep in playoffs or bye.
My counter would be that for whatever reason, the formula of Douglas drafting for Saleh has produced better results. Not perfect, but show me a team that has perfect drafts. I would say that Douglas' drafting has been better with Saleh, as if they were more on the same page than he was with Gase.
Logic has no place in a conversation where fandom exists. Especially when you throw in 54 years of futility.
Unfortunately winning THIS game makes it less likely that we win meaningful games next season. Joe Alt will be celebrating this Christmas present of less likelihood of getting drafted by the Jets. You can't tell me that Rivera was thinking of winning the game when he called those three run plays, or Jacksonville when they tanked for Trevor.
