This is really beginning to worry me, what in the hell are they doing with Wilk? This guy has only been the consummate team player and put his TRUST, his fate in the hands of the Jets FO. Figuring the guys that deserve to get paid WILL get paid. He's also thinking that with how impressive his play has been and how he's always worked hard, they would WANT to pay him?

Well, here we are and there are a bunch of players getting millions around him and he's gotten NOTHING. If the Jets manage to f*ck this up they will only have themselves to blame. They will also draw the fans ire if they burn this kid.

The Jets requested an interview in 2013 with Macc but he turned it down. He didn't want to keep Ryan as the HC.

I've never heard that

Who is Mike Maccagnan? A look at the Jets' top GM candidate

Mike Maccagnan, the Houston Texans' director of college scouting, has emerged as the frontrunner for the New York Jets' general manager position. On Friday, he will meet for the second time with team officials. He's not a household name, not even in the scouting community. Some background:

He's a native of Hightstown, New Jersey, and earned a degree in economics from Trinity (Connecticut) College. After graduating from Trinity, he served as an intern in the Washington Redskins' scouting department in 1990. From there, he went to the World League. He worked in the league's Dallas office as a scout before becoming the personnel director for the London Monarchs in 1991. He jumped to another league -- the CFL -- and spent three years in the personnel departments of Ottawa and Saskatchewan. This is what you call humble beginnings.
In 1994, Charley Casserly -- then the Washington Redskins' GM, now consulting for the Jets -- hired Maccagnan as a college scout, the start of a 20-year friendship. He moved to pro scouting the following year. When Casserly took over the expansion Texans in 2000, he brought along Maccagnan as a pro scout. A few months later, he was promoted to coordinator of college scouting. One promotion later, he was named director of college scouting in July 2011.
If Maccagnan is hired, he won't light up the news conference. People in the scouting community describe him as quiet and unassuming, most comfortable in a background role. He's had limited exposure to the media throughout his career. Some wonder whether he'll be able to handle the pressure of the New York spotlight. His supporters say claim that, while he doesn't have a dynamic personality, he has the ability to work well with people and isn't afraid to admit when he's wrong -- a quality former GM John Idzik never mastered.
One person who knows Maccagnan had this to say: "He's not a Hollywood type, but I've seen Hollywood types who couldn't stand in the middle of the Alabama locker room and pick out a single player."
Ultimately, the job comes down to finding talent. It's difficult to say how much input Maccagnan has had into the Texans' drafts; all we can do is judge the outcome. A recent study of the 2009-2013 drafts, conducted by USA Today, rated them 15th in the league. Obviously, they hit the jackpot with J.J. Watt (2011). Nearly all of their first- and second-rounders from 2009 to 2012 have panned out, but their two most recent drafts haven't yielded much at all. The last five drafts have produced only one Pro Bowl player -- Watt, who could be an all-time great.
The Texans haven't used a high draft pick on a quarterback since 2002, when they drafted David Carr No. 1 overall in the franchise's first year. If hired, Maccagnan could find himself in a position where he might have to pull the trigger on a quarterback. You'd certainly like to have someone who has been there, done that.
Maccagnan is the anti-Idzik in that he has no experience with the salary and negotiating contracts.

His deal will be done by the end of the month, if not sooner. Reports are the deal is almost done and Wilkerson may sign it by next week. Discussions to finalize the deal are ongoing.

Great signing.
Cro plays with a brashness and edge you want on your defense.
He is a high risk high reward player.
Will give up the big play on occasion since he likes to gamble; but will also make the game-changing plays.
He and Revis know how to work together being that they were teammates for a few years.
The secondary has done a complete 180 from last year thanks to the new Jet Admin.

You need to relax. we should be doing back flips over what this front office has accomplished in FA so far. Stellar job addressing needs and mo will get his. I really don't understand how you can be worried right now.

I was going to point this out in my Richardson concern, but the cap is supposed to go up 10 mill a year the next 3 years and then plateau (which is when a new CBA and lockout will probably occur). Harris and Cro deals are really 2 year deals and Richardson has already said him resigning will depend a lot on how the Jets handle the Wilkerson deal. Obviously, Mac is taking care of Wilkerson, and we could cut Harris and Cro easily to free up another 15 mill if needed, and the cap will jump eaxh year sicnifigantly between now and then to resign Richardson...but with his personality (compared to the local product Wilkerson), his ability to be resigned still worries me a little...I mean he already compares himself to JJ Watt and declared himself the best dlineman in the NFL last year...so it remains to be seen what getting a deal done with him will be like.
I'm not worried, the key to success in negotiation is to always over value your assets.

Love what the secondary is looking like now. Obviously we need Fitz to play the role of Trent Dilfer for us this season and just hold down the fort.

Don't be silly, they've been negotiating from day one. Building a strong d around him improves the teams leverage. Instead of overpaying him to waste his career on a losing team, they've now proved their ability to build a strong unit where mo can excel in stats, have support, and win.

You also have him under contract, you want to save every cap dollar in the event something big becomes available, then when the dust is settled you pay him based on where you stand.

i like this move because bowles does.. it really is that cut & dry for me..

not buying this adversely affecting the resigning mo & sheldon, BTW.. unless of course bolwes & mac are incompetent & i think it's fair not to label them as such this early in their tenures..

what's not up for debate is the jets secondary went from it's greatness weakness to a strength in a blick of an eye..

feels fun being a jet fan again!!

Jets agree to sign free agent safety Marcus Gilchrist

The Jets on Thursday evening agreed to sign free agent safety Marcus Gilchrist, formerly of the Chargers.

That news came from NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, who reported that Gilchrist will receive a four-year contract, that the Jets are currently finalizing it, and that it will be signed Friday. Monetary terms were not immediately available.

On Wednesday, Gilchrist's camp prepared to begin contract negotiations with the Jets, while also starting to schedule a visit with another team, in case Gilchrist and the Jets could not reach an agreement, a league source said.

As it turned out, Gilchrist did not need to take any other visits. He is reportedly coming to the Jets. He would be the first safety they have landed this offseason.

The source spoke to NJ Advance Media on a condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk publicly about the matter.

On Thursday afternoon, it appeared talks with Gilchrist might have stalled, because the Jets were still reaching out to other free agent safeties. But Gilchrist and the Jets apparently got their deal done.

The Jets needed a safety to play next to second-year pro Calvin Pryor because they are likely to let 32-year-old Dawan Landry walk in free agency. Rutgers alumnus Devin McCourty, the highest-profile pending free agent safety this offseason, decided to re-sign with the Patriots, though the Jets were reportedly not in the hunt for him.

Pryor is an in-the-box safety who is better closer to the line of scrimmage. Last season, he had to play more deep coverage than he was comfortable with, to account for the Jets' deficiencies at cornerback.

They likely will not have those cornerback problems in 2015, as they have brought back elite corner Darrelle Revis. They also signed cornerback Buster Skrine, who could replace Kyle Wilson as the Jets' slot corner. And on Thursday, they agreed to sign free agent corner Antonio Cromartie, reuniting him with Revis in the Jets' secondary, where they started together from 2010-12.

The Jets' secondary, such a major weak point last season, is beginning to transform into one of their strongest areas.

Still, Gilchrist didn't have a great 2014 season. He was rated No. 72 among safeties by Pro Football Focus, including 83rd in coverage and 42nd against the run. In 2013, he was rated 20th overall among safeties, including 55th in coverage and 18th against the run.

He has been a full-time starting safety for the past two seasons, after playing cornerback for his first two years in the NFL. Gilchrist started four games in each of his first two NFL seasons. He is 26, and is a former second-round draft pick by San Diego. He has five career interceptions.

Now, can he combine with Revis, Cromartie and Skrine to help fix the Jets' secondary?

The Jets last season allowed 31 touchdown passes (third-most in the NFL) and intercepted just six passes (tied for fewest in the league). The Jets' passing defense DVOA in 2014 ranked 24th in the NFL, according to Football Outsiders. In 2013, the Jets ranked 18th in this metric.

In 2011, Revis's last fully healthy season with the Jets, they were second. The year before, they were seventh. And in 2009, they were first. Will Revis help put them up near the top again?

Gilchrist arrived for a free agency visit with the Jets on Tuesday night. He met with the team as scheduled on Wednesday and had dinner with the Jets' coaches and Skrine on Wednesday night.

The NFL's free agency signing period began at 4 p.m. Tuesday, so any players like Gilchrist who were impending free agents became unrestricted free agents at that time, and could begin visiting teams.

Gregory, Fowler, Beasely, Dupree, or Ray, whatever Bowles and Mac thinks is the best way to get the ball out of the QBs hands and into the teeth of our secondary works for me.

It's funny as much as I would like to 'complete' the defense with a stud edge guy, and I have been tooting that horn for awhile, I'm not so sure now. It wouldn't shock me if we go all offense with the first three picks. Maybe La'el Collins at #6 , Gordon or Gurley in 2nd round or best available WR, and a QB in 3rd. Really have a bunch of different ways we can go, and to be honest I'd be pretty happy with several of the options. Very exciting indeed.
