Sounds like Frank Reich is going to land here. The Jets have parted ways with Engstrand.

I suspect that Woody told Glenn that Engstrand had to go, Glenn bargained to get Engstrand moved into a non-job like Hackett, and Engstrand wanted no part of it.

In any case Engstrand was unimpressive, I still say that rather than creating an offense for Fields Engstrand tried to shoehorn Fields into his offense. So many things we didn't see, we never found out whether Arian Smith could catch the deep ball or whether Jelani Woods could replicate the pass-catching range he showed in his rookie season with the Colts.

There are some Jets fans out there who are apoplectic about this move, and I don't understand why. Jets fans almost always want coaches fired. So why, after one of the worst offensive seasons ever, are some fans so high on Engstrand?

We all watched.
3 runs into the line. Punt.
2 runs 0 gain. Incomplete.
Play action on first down. Int.
Hand-off on 1st down. Fumble. Possession lost.
That's just about how most of the offensive Possessions went all Season.
Especially after Garrett Wilson went down.
Engstrand, like Glenn is not ready or experienced enough to lead successfully.
He will go back to Detroit and you may hear his name down the road but from what I've seen He ain't no good. Yet.

I think that’s the generic playbook that gets handed out to every OC that comes to the jets. It’s astounding

Being the OC for this outfit is going to be a tough job for whoever they hire if they don't get a decent QB. Under the circumstances Tanner didn't do that badly for a guy that had no experience. There were frequently receivers open that the QBs missed. It didn't help much with the penalty machine, John Simpson a supposed Vet leader, with 11, twice as many as any other on the "O" line which had a total of 34. Still..........he wasn't going to be able to put it all together until that QB position stabilizes and neither will any of these candidates they are interviewing. It's a tough job and I suspect that these interviewees see that and are declining to take the job. With the way the coaching hire fiasco is going for Glenn right now I wouldn't be surprised if we have a worse coaching staff in 2026 than we had in 2025. Go Jets.

Because as handicapped as he was, he schemed receivers open on every play. A competent QB would have taken advantage, a good QB would have had real success.

It's really not how the season went. Jets passed more than they Ran the ball. I'd bet they were between 10 -15 for pass plays vs run plays. Probably have not been a top 5 run team since 2010. Not taking success just percentage of runs vs pass. Lack of QB and WRs do make it seem like they didn't pass much but they did

Well those first few games were pretty good with balance in the Offensive flow, but the results were often Offensive to the eye.
The team was all over place deciding what kind of Offense they were going to develop into during the course of the Season.
When Wilson went down the offense be came non existent.
Those last few games  were adequately described above.
This a rudderless organization with weak leadership on the Field and in the Owners box.
Hell they even offered that gas bag Gruden a position and he turned them down.
Guys dying to get back to the NFL and doesn't want any part of this sad-sack Franchise.
Engstrand should thank God he's gone.
He can resurrect his career sooner now.
Jets are so screwed.

The reality is he was forced to make adjustments to the offense multiple times due to personnel charges, which he did. Effectively. Lack of talent led to lack of execution . Missed and dropped passes were numerous in nearly every game. In no way is that the fault of the OC. The plays were there to be made.
Gruden is not going to any team as an Offensive assistant let alone one with no QB and no viable draft option at the position. I'm glad he said no, if the offer happened at all. He destroyed the Raiders in one off season and they still have not recovered.

a big part of successful coaching is understanding what your players can do and putting them in position to do that

Jets scheme seemed to be about what a generic median QB could do - and what generic media players elsewhere on offense could so.

Figuring out what guys can do and then making that happen is key

reminds me of a situation at an insanely low level - years ago I coached youth hoops - a boys team and a girls team. On the girls team, there was a player who was okay on defense. She could not dribble to save her life. She could not pass very well - didnt "see" the court. BUT, she could hit the three from a spot 45 degrees off the baseline. Ended up coaching her - this is your spot. Get set, show your numbers to the player with the ball. Now and then run a flex cut toward the baseline and run back to your spot. If you get the ball at your spot comfortably take the shot. Always. Never dribble. If you just cant shoot, pass the ball up high. She killed from that spot. I want to remember like taking a lot of shots and hitting 50% of them. You figure out what the player can do.

Jets announced the OC interviewees and 2 of the 5 were minorities, so with the Rooney Rule satisfied I suspect Reich will be named OC shortly.

But doesn't the responsibility of QB development also fall onto him? How could the Jets trust him to develop a drafted QB?

No..........not really. That was the responsibility of London, the quarterback coach who was recently fired. Tanner's job was to create plays that gave the QB's opportunities. He did that over and over. They just failed to take advantage of those opportunities.

While he does have considerable history as a QB coach. The development of a QB falls primary on the QB coaches shoulders.
It like when fans want a HC because he developed a QB at a former stop. The HC does not work with the players.
You also have to factor in the QBs he had . You don't develop veteran QBs.
Fields is a glorified RB, Taylor is a oft injured vet at the end of his career .
Your a college coach, o line right?
How much time does your HC spend teaching your O lineman techniques. How many hours a day does he spend developing your QB? Does he teach the WRs routes?
He did a great job with 1 legit player and still did a great job when the 1 star went on IR.

So Gruden has stated he never spoke with anyone from the Jets and was never offered the OC position or any other position with the team.
