The New York Jets (1-1) travel to Ford Field to face the Detroit Lions (1-1) in Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season on Sunday, featuring a high-profile emotional and tactical reunion for Jets head coach Aaron Glenn against his former boss Dan Campbell.

Both teams enter this contest looking to rebound from difficult Week 2 results. The New York Jets let a double-digit fourth-quarter lead slip away before falling 20-17 in overtime to the Green Bay Packers, while the Detroit Lions suffered a 41-31 defeat on the road against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football. Despite early-season defensive vulnerabilities for Detroit, Dan Campbell's squad historically thrives at home following a loss.

Key Storylines and Keys to the Game
  • Aaron Glenn's Homecoming: Facing his former team for the first time as a head coach, Glenn's defense will need to clean up discipline issues after the Jets were flagged 13 times for 156 yards against Green Bay.
  • Lions Defensive Bleeding: Detroit ranks near the bottom of the league in early defensive metrics, yielding a league-high 13 plays of 20+ yards and struggling heavily in red-zone efficiency.
  • The Ground and Air Battle: Geno Smith has stabilized the Jets' offense with steady targets like Garrett Wilson, while Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs continue to power an explosive Detroit attack averaging over 360 yards per game
The Detroit Lions have the upper edge, specifically due to their elite offensive foundation and superior positional depth. While the Jets possess high-end, blue-chip defensive pieces, the Lions boast a more complete, top-tier roster structure across the board.

Positional Talent Breakdown

Position GroupEdgeRoster Context & Star Power
QuarterbackLionsJared Goff offers high-level stability and command over a complex system. Geno Smith is a capable starter for the Jets, but Goff has the higher ceiling in terms of postseason pedigree.
Offensive WeaponsLionsThe Jets have elite individual anchors in
Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. However, Detroit answers with a devastating tier-1 cluster of playmakers: Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta.
Offensive LineLionsFronted by superstar tackle Penei Sewell, Detroit consistently builds one of the most punishing and deep offensive lines in the NFL. The Jets have strong young foundational pieces like Olu Fashanu, but lack the veteran cohesion of Detroit.
Defensive FrontJetsAidan Hutchinson is a generational force for Detroit, but the Jets hold the edge as a complete unit. The Jets' defensive line rotation features elite youth like rookie David Bailey alongside Will McDonald IV and T'Vondre Sweat.
Secondary & LinebackersJetsThe Jets overhauled their talent here by bringing in all-pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and veteran anchor Demario Davis. Combined with their young defensive backs, they outclass a Detroit secondary currently thinned by injuries.

The Verdict
The Detroit Lions take the overall talent crown. Their roster is designed around an elite offensive nucleus that features multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro caliber players at the skill positions and on the line. The Jets have a fantastic, rapidly rising young defensive core, but their overall depth and offensive roster constraints keep them a notch below Detroit's premium talent floor.

The Prediction
If AG preps after a tough home loss the areas that were faulty against Green Bay, expect this to be a better matchup then most expect. The Lions defense is beatable. Our special teams needs to show up with no mistakes. Our run defense is our key making opponents one dimensional, forcing Goff to be the reason to beat us, he is no Jordan Love. Yes the Lions have a talented offensive unit but making them one-dimensional passing attack will hinder their game plan. On our side we have talented rushing attack duo, we need to establish the ground attack to utilize the play action with AD, Wilson the main targets, can utilize the screen pass to Hall and stretch this defense. I expect the Jets to get ahead early but this week hold up and win this game by 10+. Yes a bold prediction, but we have the talent to win this game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets win or lose this game. Damn shame but it is what it is!

I hate the fact we gave away 2-0. Really was fun through 3.5 quarters. The Lions are the team I've been wanting to be in recent years. The team nobody wants to play. It would be fun to see us run and stop the run. Let chips fall after that.

Yeah, the Jets have excuse to lose this game. I’m sure the Lions feel the same exact way.

Other than the CS, mainly the Head coach giving away the game and the special teams screwing it up. They are going to have to be more aggressive on offense from this point on also. Other than that, the Jets have no excuse! Lol

Jets can't win a shootout. St Brown is much more dangerous than Wilson because Goff is a more dangerous passer than Geno. I still see Jets passing game hampered by their inability to handle stunts/blitzes. DET will protect their QB better. Gibbs is gonna be a problem too. Jets only chance is to play clean and force turnovers....they will not win in a drive for drive matchup. Jets have to shorten the game by running the ball effectively. Score each time and do smart things like better navigating that tricky 1st half 2:00 and who gets ball in 2nd half. Game should be entertaining.

Correct, going score for score the Jets don’t have a chance. Not because they don’t have the talent but because as a team, they are just not ready for that type of challenge. I personally don’t have faith in Geno going score for score with anybody.

Plus with our coaching staff, you just get the feel that something will go wrong. Even if it doesn’t! The defense is gonna have to step up and cause a turnover of two. Maybe even an interception. How weird and pathetically ironic would that be?

The Jets have a chance to win this game but a very slim one. We’ll see what happens.

The funny thing is Glenn probably brought Geno here because he did so well vs the Lions with the Seahawks. The best part is it was against his defenses.
Problem is he left the best parts of the team in Seattle and took the worst part
