What kind of coach will Todd Bowles be?

He has said since day one he would be the HC of both sides of the ball. I am very happy to see he is a man of his word and showed us this mini camp that he practices what he preaches.

Well, it is one thing to say he will coach the entire team. But remember, he's never had anything to do with an offense in the past. Who knows if what he coaches/suggests will work? He could be the most incompetent guy in the room.

Not saying that is the case, but his offensive coaching prowess is far from proven.

Some one that will hold players accountable for knowing their assignments and getting after them when they blow it...as he DID in AZ as the DC. You have already seen that with players comments now... having said that every time he was asked about his philosophy he stated, we will play complementary football."

When did Rex every make that statement let alone enforce it? There is an old adage that applies here, "the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree." Rex is exactly like Buddy his father, a very good DC, but a lousy HC.

No one knows how this team will play this year but I gotta tell ya so far this management team is light years ahead of the past regime(s).

Can't say I differ on this. What Maccagnan has done thus far seems to be nothing short of amazing. I don't like the Ridley signing for obvious reasons - his fumbling is a liability. The problem with the NYJ in the 2015 season will be the offense. Adding a guy with a fumbling problem can only make matters worse.

But yet they traded for Zac Stacy, a steal for a 7th rounder that will likely beat out (I'm hoping) Ridley to play second fiddle behind Ivory. That makes me happy and it will undoubtedly keep EVERY RB doing their best as competition tends to do just that.

So I am happy about the team that has been assembled, but that once again begs the obvious question:

What can Bowles do with this team? I hope he is the real deal but who really knows?

If someone has mentioned this, I'm sorry for repeating, but hiring a black head coach was perfect timing. If Macc & Woody had hired a another white HC, I don't think he would have been received as well after replacing Rex who was very popular with the black players. Our team is 90% black, and I think they will respond and perform better for him, than someone like Marrone. I love the hire.

I don't necessarily agree with this Cy. I think the important thing about this hire has nothing to do with the color of the new HC's skin, but his ability to command respect. 51 posted an article that says it all about the genius of the hire; the stark contrast between Bowles and Ryan and how that contrast will benefit the locker room. He is direct in his communications with the players, works very hard and is detail oriented; all qualities that command respect. Supposedly the players had tuned Rex out, and now Bowles appears to have their attention. The bottom line is that Bowles will thrive or fail on qualities that have nothing to do about the color of his skin, which is how it should be.

I think hiring a an OC like Gailey speaks volumes about his willingness to be a complete HC of the entire team.

From Wikipedia:

Todd Robert Bowles (born November 18, 1963) is an American football head coach for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He played eight seasons in the NFL as a safety, mainly for the Washington Redskins, and started in Super Bowl XXII.

Bowles attended Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey.[2] He played college football for Temple University.

After retiring as a player, Bowles was a member of the Green Bay Packers' player personnel staff from 1995–1996. He was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Morehouse College in 1997, and the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Grambling State from 1998–1999. He was the defensive backs coach for the New York Jets in 2000, Cleveland Browns in 2004, and Dallas Cowboys from 2005–2007. He was the Browns' defensive nickel package coach from 2001–2003.

Bowles was hired by the Miami Dolphins as the team's secondary coach and assistant head coach on January 23, 2008. After nearly four seasons as the secondary coach and assistant head coach, he was named the interim head coach on December 12, 2011, following the firing of head coach Tony Sparano. Bowles' first game as interim head coach of the Dolphins came on December 18, on the road against the Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins won the game 30-23. The Dolphins finished 2–1 under Bowles in 2011.

Also from Wikipedia:

Rex Ashley Ryan[2] (born December 13, 1962) is the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League (NFL). After serving as an assistant coach for 22 years, Ryan attained his first head coaching job in the NFL with the New York Jets in 2009. He is the son of former Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals head coach Buddy Ryan and is the fraternal twin brother of Rob Ryan, current defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

From a young age, Ryan aspired to follow in his father's footsteps and become a professional football coach. After spending the majority of his youth in Canada, Ryan returned to the United States as a teenager where he attended college at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Upon graduating Ryan spent the next 22 years serving as an assistant coach on different teams at both the college and professional level. At the behest of their head coach Brian Billick, Ryan joined the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 and spent nine years there. In 2005 he became the defensive coordinator, and in 2008 the assistant head coach.

So, Bowles was an 8-year pro, while Ryan never met a donut he didn't like.

Will that matter to the players?

It can't hurt....

As things have developed thus far, I must say he has his work cut out for him. Geno Smith is a POS and I'm sure Bowles is plenty aware of it. In fact, probably for multiple reasons it was Mike MacCagnan's intention to draft a QB.

1) The jury is still very much out on Geno Smith, but this IS his last chance in NY. I must say, thus far he's not making the most of this opportunity. Stiffing one of his own teammates for $600 when the fact is, it is chump change for Geno to pay and keep a teammate supporting him and willing to do battle with him.

2) He was the best QB in camp though so far. But there again, that's not saying much when your only competition is a retread from many teams and a developmental guy.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. Geno days in NY are numbered. As far as I am concerned, Geno is a terrible QB and an even worse person. The Jets need a QB that they are willing to rally behind, and I strangely doubt that any visible support given by the players is only for the media. They do not want to make waves. But they truly dislike Geno. They think he sucks as a QB. They would substantially happier if he were off the team.

He only has his work cut out for him because of the prior regime. Geno will be cut after the season if not sooner. They will try to turn around Sheldon only because he is extremely talented. Bowles will get the most out of this roster. Mac will bring in talent and more importantly draft talent. It sucks that Sheldon hurt this team with his stupidity. Geno's stupidity might have made this team better actually.

For what it's worth, Elias, here's my take on today......

Two skirmishes just means the dog days of summer, the summer heat, unpleasant and very tiring practices. A few players tempers flared. But I am also equally sure that this meant nothing to the players. This is NORMAL business occurring in training camp.

That is in contrast to what transpired between Geno and IK. That was the very definition of ugly. It was extremely childish and extremely disappointing.

What's worse is that it shows our supposed leaders true colors. We, as a fan base, have just been informed of just how much of an idiot our QB is. It's a very damning thing for our team. It might be even worse for the players as they showed no inspiration whatsoever in the Lions game. It wouldn't surprise me if the fight had a very adverse effect on the team as a whole.

Moreover, it's obvious that Todd Bowles has his work cut out for him. This team has problems within the most important and pivotal players on the team.

What's encouraging about it is that everyone now knows who the A$$holes are. Everyone knows what needs to happen here to fix things.

Geno will get another chance just so the coaching staff followed their due diligence. After he fails (and he will. If he's dumb enough to get into a fight with a fellow teammate, then he's too dumb to be a QB), the team should move to cut Geno with great enthusiasm and resolve.

Getting rid of Geno is addition by subtraction.
