Todd Bowles says he does not set statistical goals, such as No. 1 defense or No. 1 rushing offense. Says stats are misleading. #nyj

Good to hear. Didn't we finish in the top 10 last year? I wouldn't have thought that to be the case while watching all the games.

Well lets see if he does as well as Rex as a rookie HC..:)
He may not and in all likelihood, will not. However, he may be setting a better long term tone with this team. The discipline that he is trying to instill (gassers, gag rules, etc.) are probably a turn off to some, but may pay big dividends down the road. Its' a fine line though and Bowles does run the risk of losing the team if he goes too far, but as an ex-NFL player I hope he knows what the breaking point is. Greg Schiano is an example of someone who didn't.

I think he'll be better than Rex Ryan as far as team wide management is concern as holding the team for their actions on the field and off the field ... From past teams he had the success especially last year being assistant coach of the year .. Hopefully that can carry over to something special in the head coaching role

I like Bowles and 100% hoping he's successful however he will get passes Rex never got.. Rex has a personality like most fans do and saw good in players even when it wasn't there at times.. Hypocrisy will be abundant when fans say 8-8 will be good for Bowles when a really weak 2013 team did the same with a ton less talent on both sides of the ball..

Here are our choices for head coach Todd Bowles' top 12 answers to questions during the Jets' 2015 training camp:

Opening statement after the first practice of camp (July 30):
"We’re out of pads. A couple of people fell. Everybody ran around. We’re working the kinks out and we know we have a long process. They worked hard and we will go from there."

On if he's been impressed with his quarterbacks at the start to camp (Aug. 2):
"All the quarterbacks have done a good job. They haven’t turned the ball over for two days. I don’t know how impressed you’re going to be. You know, it’s nice, but you aren’t going to sit there and fly the flag."
On if he got excited watching CB Darrelle Revis match up against WR Brandon Marshall (Aug. 2):
"I mean, I’m not playing PS4. These guys have got to play. I have to look at a whole bunch of things, I’ll look back when I retire and be like, ‘Wow, I had those two guys.’ Right now I can’t do that."

On if he thinks Darrelle Revis is better than Deion Sanders was when he played (Aug. 6):
"I didn’t say that [laughter]. I said in my era, I’ve seen those guys play. Personally, I don’t think anybody is better than Deion — that’s just my opinion. But you have to go through a career, then get put in the Hall of Fame and measured that way. But the things that Deion was able to do as a player — punt return and kick return and offense — and the speed he had and the awareness he had, that’s hard to be matched in any era. Mike Haynes was before that and I thought Mike was one of the best that ever played if not the best and he doesn’t get talked about. It’s a good barber shop argument and we can go from there. Mel [Blount], too. We can be out here for a year trying to debate this because all of them are great players."

On if he thought Brandon Marshall pushed off on a 35-yard touchdown reception at the MetLife Stadium practice (Aug. 8):
"I couldn’t see it all the way down the field as a head coach. If I was on the defensive side of the ball, I would probably say yes. If I was on the offensive side of the ball, I’d say no. That’s one of the perils of being a head coach. You don’t have an opinion on it."

On Ryan Fitzpatrick's progress at first-team quarterback (Aug. 18):
"He’s a pro. Unlike a young guy, he’s been in the league and he’s played so he’s started a bunch of games. He’s played and come off the bench a lot. With him, he’s handling a lot and it helps your reps, it helps your stamina. You have to get used to those things, and Ryan is in very good shape, so he’s taking it all in stride."

On if Chris Ivory after his 33-yard TD run vs. Atlanta is faster than he thought (Aug. 24):
"I told him that, actually. He’s a lot faster than I thought, him and Bilal [Powell]. Those are two quality running backs. Those guys work hard. They keep their mouth shut, they keep their heads down, they block, they run inside, they run outside. I’m very pleased with both of them."

On if WR Chris Owusu’s concussion would affect his battle for a roster spot (Aug. 24):
"He’s still battling. He was doing some good things before he left. We’ll see how he is when he comes back. Those guys get nicked up. When somebody gets nicked up, it’s somebody else’s chance to make a play, to come in and prove themselves. It’s the Wally Pipp rule."

On if the team was sluggish at that day's practice because of the intensity of training camp (Aug. 10):
"No, you can’t be sluggish. You can’t practice average if you want to be great. You can have very few of those days, and today was the first time. I don’t think it was a big deal, but at the same time they’ve got to understand where they are and today was not a good day."

On how players can strike a balance between physicality and going too far on the field (Aug. 16):
"At the end of the day, we all need each other, but it’s a fine line. The mess-talking, the bravado and swagger and everything is fine, but you have to understand situational football at the same time. You can’t fight and be braggadocious and be loud if you don’t understand what’s going on in the game. That makes for a dumb player and we are not trying to have dumb players."

On if rookie QB Bryce Petty having challenges is par for the course (Aug. 1):
"Yeah, he’s a rookie. He’s going to have some challenges. He’s anxious and his upper body is moving slower than his lower body. He’s a little anxious with his feet. He’ll calm down. I’m not worried about that. The first day, he is a little gun-happy and gung-ho, but he’ll calm down and put the ball in the right place."

On if he has to dial back his praise of rookie Leonard Williams to keep him humble (Aug. 24):
"We’ve got a lot of guys with big heads. He’s not the first guy. It’s a bunch of veterans you’ve got to hold back praise for. We haven’t done anything. We’ve practiced and we’ve played preseason games. We’re progressing and we’re getting better. The praise is a little tainted because we’re still progressing to get where we need to be."

And a 13th quote for a baker's dozen that just struck us as quintessential Todd. The coach onCalvin Pace’s groin injury (Aug. 26)…
"He’s still day-to-day. I’ll get a better idea tomorrow. If he does something, I’ll be hopeful. If he doesn’t, I’ll be doubtful."

He definitely get a pass because people are under the assumption that it will take a few years to clean the stench of Rex off this team.

You are what your record says you are. People used this line to make fun of Rex when he'd say we are the best 4-12 team, etc. It should be said with Bowles.

This season is very worrisome to me. I don't have much a pulse on our coaches!

I'm not giving him a pass. If he had last years roster, a different story

me neither. I want to see improvement in all facets of the game but i do want to give him a year before passing any judgment!

I have a really really good feeling that we have the right regime in place.

My son just pointed out to me that Todd Bowles sounds just like Cleveland Brown from Family Guy.

He's not far off the mark.

Rex inherited a playoff caliber roster in 2009. Bowles is taking over a team that won 4 games. Now, Macc has added a lot of talent, but it's not quite the same situation.

A playoff caliber roster that didn't make the playoffs and was 4-12 the year before that?? Oh and no QB..LOL

the jets were 9-7 the year before ryan took over
the jets were 4-12 the year before bowles takes over

looking at 3-year trends, they were 9-7, 4-10, 10-6 the 3 years before rex took over
they were 4-12, 8-8, 6-10 the 3 years before bowles

now i was a big rex fan, but he stepped into a better situation than bowles (based on roster at the end of last year).

Mangini's qb's were Chad and Favre some fair fans may say they were better then Sanchez and Geno.. Or having a HOF QB may have helped with the 9-7 in 2008.. The QB Mangini dumped Chad took the 1-15 Fins to the playoffs in 2008.. But good QB play isn't important to a team wining games I guess??

I feel like both of their situations were not ideal. However, the way I felt about this team before Macc went on a shopping spree cannot be expressed. We were on paper the least talented team in the NFL last year. I am surprised we won even four games.

did you happen to watch any jets games last year? i find it hard to believe anyone who watched the 2014 jets would think that rex left bowles a stocked roster. and if you want to talk QB, what exactly did bowles inherit at the QB position?

Rex left him a crap QB in Geno and a pretty dam good front 7..Plus Bowles got players Rex loved like Revis and Cro back. Granted Idzik got rid of them but fair minded fans and some writers thought going 8-8 in 2013 was Rex's best coaching job with Revis in Tampa and Cro hurt with the bad hip.. Last year as E said was devoid of talent. There is a double standard when it comes to Rex because many didn't like his personality.. I like Bowles alot I think he will be a fine HC even though after Rex he's a bit boring..LOL
