What kind of coach will Todd Bowles be?

Loved this pick from the day I heard it. He's a Jersey boy...no bullshit, straight shooter, old school football ex-player. Knows his shit and expects you to as well. Players respect him. Fans will love him. He will get results. Down the road.....we'll see.

Mangini? Ryan? Please! Keep the subject on professional football.

I don't believe the team will go higher than 9 - 7 this year. That's a giant step from 4 - 12.
This team has to keep building, the offense will have to improve next year without letting the defense slip. Revis was here before, so the team this year isn't a world beater.
The best thing about this team is a solid GM and HC, these guys can develop this team upward in the future.

Well, it's been a long time since I started this thread. I'm sort of glad it's still here and being posted to regularly now that the season has begun.

Granted, it's just one game, but Todd Bowles was impressive. I saw the team come out flat. They were not playing well for most of the 1st half. Todd Bowles himself, had a few mistakes including a boneheaded challenge that he could not possibly have won. It makes me think he wanted to use a TO anyway?

What's impressive is how he got the team under control as the game wore on. He had to get the offense and Fitz under control and starting with the 2 minute drive, I think he did. The defense pitched a 2nd half shutout and that was great. He got the defense to play up to expectations.

It's also the more subtle things like Elias mentioned. Bowles knew the double move was coming to Cro and he attempted to warn him. Unfortunately, Cro did not hear the warning and he got burned. But he saw what was happening before the plays actually happened.

Very impressive first game, but like I said in numerous other posts, he's got a LONG way to go. We still have no decent QB and an even worse problem with the specific QB's that are on the team. No TE, Not enough depth along the OL, he still has veterans that want to get paid by the Jets and can't. Even though that isn't something he is responsible for, he still has to get those players that feel "wronged" to suit up and play hard.

The Jets have not beaten a team with a winning record since 2013. The team hasn't made the playoffs since the 2010 season.

really liked that clip of the Coach. Seeing what would happen and warning the players. Encouraging and exhorting with subdued confidence. Way to go Coach!

If he could read plays as a player the way he did on Sunday as a coach, that explains how an undrafted free agent had a good career in this league as a starting Safety for a terrific Redskins team. Usually when you go undrafted its because you don't have the measurables that excite anybody, but what he may have lacked in physical ability, he probably made up for with an extremely high football IQ. I remember Bowles as a player and he wasn't just along for the ride on those championship Redskins teams, he was a good player, not an all-pro, but a good football player.

Those are the kinds of players who profile as future head coaches, not the great players, for them the game comes too easy. Guys like Bowles, because they don't have the great God given ability, they have to be smarter than everyone else and able to anticipate plays before they happen to stay a step ahead. I bet if you talk to his former teammates on the Redskins, they'll tell you Bowles was like having another coach on the field, he saw the game like a coach, not like a player.

I don't know that they would say that, but I'd be surprised if they didn't.

I got a kick out of his conversation with Revis after #24 recovered the fumble. Went something like "making sure you got tackled was a veteran move so you didn't have to go right back on the field had you scored"

i liked the pick since casserly & wolf's recommendations & the same with mac as well.. but how can you get a read on a head coach before his first game coaching your team?? throw in the fact smith & richardson didn't do him any favors!!

the first 27 minutes for coach bowles weren't very good by any stretch but the last 33 were pretty damn good, IMO..

the all important "halftime adjustments" we're obviously huge as well as only 4 penalties after having real issues with them in the preseason..

the cherry on top for me was his command of monday presser..

i'm all in!!

[h=1]Todd Bowles confronts trap game by channeling inner Bill Parcells[/h]

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It's not a suspension or an arrest or a locker-room fight, but it's a coaching challenge nonetheless -- a welcome challenge, of course.

Managing prosperity is part of the job, and Todd Bowles knows it. It's better than dealing with the calamity du jour, as was the case in the summer, but mishandling the good times also can be damaging to a team. Success is intoxicating; Bowles' objective is to maintain a sober, clear-eyed determination at One Jets Drive.

The New York Jets' impressive win Monday night was a perception-changing, expectation-raising accomplishment. They're 2-0 for the first time since 2011, and here come the seemingly inept Philadelphia Eagles, driving up the New Jersey Turnpike, desperate for their first victory. The way things are going for them, the bus driver will get off the wrong exit and they'll end up in Hoboken.

All of which means this is a dangerous game for the Jets. That's how the NFL works.
Bowles doesn't seem worried. Does he ever?

He was chilling outside the team cafeteria on Wednesday, after his daily news conference, when I asked if he's concerned about his team's mindset in these circumstances. After all, it's a new coach and a new season, and everything is still in the formative stages, including the team's identity.

No, he said.

"We have a veteran team. These guys understand," Bowles said. "Through training camp and some of the trials and tribulations -- with the injuries and the penalties and the fighting -- we understand how we win and how we lose."

I covered Bill Parcells' run with the Jets, 1997-99, and I hear a lot of Parcells in Bowles. It makes sense, of course, because he was around Parcells in New York, Dallas and Miami, and Bowles considers the Hall of Fame coach a mentor. At times, they speak the same language, with an ability to simplify the game into two categories: things that make you win, things that make you lose. He sounds like a chip of the ol' Bill.

Every Monday, Bowles shows his team video clips from other games, instances in which teams lost because of critical mistakes. There are a thousand ways to lose a football game -- the Jets' closest NFL neighbors, the Eagles and New York Giants, have provided plenty of material -- and he wants to educate his players on potential pitfalls. Parcells used to do the same thing.

"I talk to them every day about others' mistakes -- not just our team, but other teams," Bowles said. "Something happens every week. We talk about how games are won or lost, saying, 'We can't do this' or 'We don't want to do that.' Not just our film, but everybody's film. We're mature in that way. It helps a lot."

In terms of age and experience, the Jets are a seasoned team. They have nine starters in the 30-to-32 range and a bunch of guys right behind them. The Jets have only one rookie in the lineup, Leonard Williams. That kind of veteran leadership should help them in pressure situations, as it did in the fourth quarter on Monday night, when they responded with a touchdown after theIndianapolis Colts closed to within 10-7.

The Jets endured a season's worth of adversity in the months of July and August, including the stunning Geno Smith-IK Enemkpali altercation. In retrospect, Bowles said of the Punch Heard 'Round the NFL, "It can tear you apart or it can bring you together. It can open your eyes."

Clearly, Bowles believes it has unified the team. I asked him if the fight steeled their determination.

"They're all hardened and determined, but it kind of brings them together more, and they understand the job they have to do," he said. "We have so many veterans. They can go out and fight individually on their own, but if they fight together ... that's what we're trying to get done. Then they'll become a good football team. They're working toward that."
Sunday will be a great test to see how much they have developed.
