And let's add in the Pats' refusal to cooperate with the investigation: Brady refusing to hand over his phone to investigators plus the Pats' refusing to make McNally available for further interviews. - The more I think about the contents of that report, the better I feel about my penalty predictions. Heck, I think Brady simply refusing to hand over his phone alone would get him suspended for a few games. So for the whole ball of wax. including the texting evidence that he directed the deflation to get done? I think a 1 year suspension for him is a reasonable guess.

i hope your predictions on the suspensions come true. I heard an interview fro Bob Costas and he thinks this isn't a big deal but because people hate the Pats it's a bigger issue than it should be. He doesn't see severe punishments coming.

I know a lot of people would disagree with very good reason but that is why I said I would like to see congress get involved. I would like to see a report that has the power of the subpoena behind it written and turned in.

I don't see it happening.

It also could be another explanation for the league forfeiting its tax-exempt status. Congress would have been more inclined to intervene if the league was retaining its tax-exempt status.

Though it is possible. If this is indicative of cheating in football, a multi-billion dollar sport in which millions of Americans spend money on tickets, television packages, and merchandise, then perhaps Congress does get involved. A lot depends on Goodell. He could anger 31 owners and Congress by letting his buddy off the hook again. Or he could risk the wrath of Kraft, and his sidekick Belichick, by coming down hard on the Pats.

It backfired on the pats big time trying to use outside temperatures as the source for deflation. It proved to be true with the Colts balls that it did drop the psi a little according to the ideal gas law. The arrogant patriots however were way lower than this could explain.

Yeah, I had heard about Costas' comments. I don't see how he reaches his conclusions, considering the mountain of evidence in this case, coupled with the fact that this is a second cheating offense for the Pats. If there in fact aren't severe penalties meted out, it could only be attributed to the relationship between Kraft and Goodell. But others have suggested that the 31 other owners are on to the favoritism that has been shown toward the Pats previously, and will likely keep Goodell on the straight and narrow this time around. I think they may be onto something. And what will the Saints have to say if Belichick goes unpunished, after what happened to Payton?

If it wasn't a big issue then why do it? Not only that but he was willing to give lavish items to these two people for preparing the game balls how he likes them.

Yeah, there are some great graphs in the technical appendices comparing the simulated and actual deflations of both sets of balls, including the results of simulated game conditions. A really nice piece of work that leaves no doubt in my mind the extent of the deflation of the Pats' balls cannot be explained as due to natural conditions.

I would love then to subpoena Brady and his wife's phone

The problem for the league is the perception. I've been saying this for a while.

Whether it is true or not, fans of 31 teams perceive the league to have a pro-Pats bias. If Goodell lets his buddy off the hook yet again, it will only pour gasoline on that perception. He pretty much has to come down hard on the Pats.

When the Patriots' media points out how much Pats fans contort themselves into a pretzel to try to justify things, it shows you just how bad it is.

"Patriot toadies no doubt will line up to say that the league did not prove anything that would hold up in a court of law (Brady’s dad has already labeled it “Framegate”). It’s all circumstantial, they’ll say. Plus, it says right in the report that Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick knew nothing about the intentional deflation of the footballs. It was just a couple of rogue equipment guys breaking the rules.

Good luck with that one, folks. Bend yourself into a pretzel if you must, but Brady and the Patriots are insulting your intelligence if they want you to believe that they were not aware of what was happening to the footballs on game days."

This is lifelong New Englander and 30-plus year Boston sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy. Even he is saying:

"No organization, no coach, are more attentive to detail than the Patriots and Belichick. And we’re supposed to believe that before the kickoff of the AFC Championship game, a veteran team locker room guy can disappear while he’s in possession of game balls that have already been approved by officials?

Seriously, when do the Patriots stop lying and come clean on this thing? The damage is done. Insistence on innocence is not likely to be helpful when we get to the penalty phase of this scandal."

"But it is Brady who has the most explaining to do.

It stretches all believability to conclude that he had nothing to do with this. And it damages his hard-earned legacy across America. There are simply too many football people telling us that there is no way Brady can be telling the truth."

"Now folks in Pittsburgh and Denver and Indianapolis are going to say the Patriots have been better because they cheated. This makes the deflation of footballs more than rolling through a stop sign. If there were no competitive advantage, why would the Patriots be doing it?

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell loves Kraft, loves Brady, and he loves the Patriots, but he presumably has to answer to 31 other owners — most of whom have had their butts kicked by the Patriots on a regular basis.

Sanctions are coming. For Brady and maybe for the Patriots.

It’s about systematically breaking the rules of competition. It’s about a loss of institutional control.

And a legacy tarnished once again."

so they were put on notice in 2007

there was word out that they were cheating

they probably cheated

Brady probably knew

they did not fully cooperate in the investigation

In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime; and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders.......
In the NFL justice system, the fans are represented by zero separate yet equally important groups: the Commissioner, who investigates crimes; and the NFL's attorneys, who cover up for the offenders.......Ba...Dum!

Problem with all this outrage is that the Pats were about to fall this year anyway. Now when the Jets sweep this year it will be because of the punishment the Pats/Brady receive, not that the Jets are finally the better team

I don't care how we beat them, just like they don't care how they win.

Just beat them and I'll be happy.

the issue has evolved with this report. Had there been a quick admission by the Pats, would have been small $ fine

"Yes, there was a guy in the equipment room who did something unauthorized. He has been dismissed, we are implementing tighter controls. We are confident that the possible disparity in inflation had no competitive significance."

But, we have a salvo of denials by the Pats

We have failure to cooperate fully as cited in the official report.

We have an independent report that establishes rules violations (the standard is more probable than not, like a civil case, it isnt reasonable doubt)

We have a warning years ago about messing with game balls.

At this point, between the prior notice, the violations and the noncooperation, thats really a middle finger in the face of the league office and the shield.

Note also that the Wells report and related expert reports surely cost the league over $1 million in fees. Hundreds of hours of lawyer and expert time.

Gotta take meaningful action or it sends the message that the Pats are above the rules.

You also have the Head Coach covering up a week later with some ridiculous investigTion and explanation. Never mentioned whether he questioned the people who handled the balls, only some bizarre weather explanation , that didn't seem to impact the Colts balls. At first I thought Belicheat would be spared, not anymore
