This is the season we find out re: Geno

Geno Smith is regarded as one of the league’s worst QBs, and statistically that ranking is deserved. For the past two seasons, Geno was throwing into holes he had no business throwing into. Against the Bills in the middle of last season he threw three interceptions in three plays leading to a needed benching.
But Smith’s last six games were quietly solid. He had a 66% completion rating over 134 attempts and 6 TDs to only 3 interceptions. He changed his TD/INT ratio from +0.7 to +2.0. His passer rating averaged out at 91.85, putting him in the same bracket as Joe Flacco, Jay Cutler, and Eli Manning.
So what happened?

To figure that out, we need to go back to the beginning of this season. The Jets WR depth chart is Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, and David Nelson going into the season. Defenses could trust their CB2 and nickel to cover Kerley and Nelson with next to no help, allocating players to help cover Decker, or assist in the pass rush.

No one could get open, and Geno suffered for it. Smith had 7 TDs and 10 interceptions with an abysmal 56% completion rating and a 58.53 RAT, earning a spot on the bench. But then Percy Harvin comes in via trade and defenses have to worry about someone other than Decker. Despite Harvin’s shortcomings, you can’t just leave the guy open and you certainly can’t leave your CB2 on a player who’s that fast. The depth charts were finally lined up correctly, with the opponent’s CB2 going up against the very talented Decker, the nickel being challenged by Kerley.

For the first time in his entire career, Geno had a WR corps worth the name and he responded well. By giving Geno looks and separation he’s never had before, he made less mistakes with the ball, hit his targets, and produced more passing touchdowns.

This off-season Mike Maccagnan replaced Harvin with the much more talented Brandon Marshall, who can go against top CB1s in middle and short passing game game, an ability Harvin lacked. What does this mean for Geno?

He now has the tools to prove himself. The Smith-Marshall connection is going to be key this year, and they both know it. Geno and Marshall are actually living together in the offseason, working on their chemistry and improving their knowledge of the new offensive system. Building chemistry with his new #1 target in Marshall will be critical, as his connection to Decker and Kerley has already been developed.

If Geno can get Marshall over a thousand yards with minimal turnovers, spreading the ball to the Decker, Amaro, Kerley, and rookie speedster Devin Smith, I think he may exceed expectations. Geno has proven he can produce more with talent around him. I’m excited to see what he can do with by far the most talented WR group he’s ever thrown to.

I think we've seen enough of Geno Smith to know what he is: a career backup type player (Jason Campbell type) that can flash but will be exposed if he sees too much playing time.

If he wins the job in training , then he deserves another shot. Be thankful internet coaches won't make the call. If he can't cut it, cut ties

Personally, I've seen enough of Geno to last me a lifetime. I don't want him to start even one game.

As soon as he throws his first stupid interception, that feeling of dread will return: 'Oh, no..we STILL suck.'

It'll be like a nightmare you can't wake up from.

With all of the changes we've made, I want it to feel like a totally different endevour - I want to close the door on yesterday.

Please, God, don't make it feel like last year...

LOL- you hope this doesn't turn into a debate, then debate yourself in the post . . .

Lol pls excuse me. I'm in Mexico at an all inclusive resort drinking, lots of drinking.

Anyways. What I should have said is that I don't want it to turn into a nasty debate like the others we've had where half the board threatens to ignore the other. Lol.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be another Geno debate but I'm sure it will. Basically I'm excited, Geno has shown he can produce with weapons and we'll give him the opportunity. Good thing is that Bowles will pull him out ASAP.

I still think Geno needs another chance, and I'm excited too about his improvement at the end of last season. (And I'm not even drinking. Yet.) And I'm sure he will be given another chance, at least a chance to compete in camp. If he doesn't win the job, well at least I'll be satisfied he was given a chance.

+1 Agree. If Geno picks up where he left off against the Flipper's, Fitz won't stand a chance to beat him out. I would put Petty in street clothes and let him chart the game. We through Sanchez & Geno to the wolves, lets not make the same mistake with Petty.

I knew what you meant -- it just goes to show how uncertain the position truly is . . .

My thoughts on Geno are this.

He is at best a Fitz level QB so if he beats Fitz out fine Let him play. I say Fitz wins because we know for a fact his is at that level.

I am not satisfied with that level of QB I want a top 10 QB on my team.

That is why I am happy Petty is here learning and also do not mind if we pulled the trigger on another QB next draft. Keep trying until we hit a home run.

That "improvement at the end of the season" some posters keep bringing up consisted of ONE game against the Dolphins, half of whom had given up and the other have were already packing their equipment

Their staff tanked to improve their draft position, our circus clown imbecile went all out to prove he was the beat 4-12 head coach in the NFL

That was the high water mark for our worst QB in the NFL two years running.

Fortunately we have hired people with eyes and football intelligence for a change and we are already seen
enough on tape of Smith to not allow him to screw up a third season in a row foevt

Actually, there was a post here recently of a tweet that led to an SI article commenting that Geno showed improvement over the last 6 games of the season. Unfortunately, I can't find it. Still, my impression is that Geno was improving at the end of the season, and not just in the last game. I realize you disagree, but that's OK. There will be a competition in camp. If you're right Fitz will win out easily, and then we can both get behind the winning QB. Whoever it may be.

I understand the frustration with Geno. His highs and lows have been extreme. Unfortunately, it's hard to shake games like that Buffalo monstrosity when he threw horrible INT's all over the place in one and a half quarters of football. But Geno has looked good, too. And more than just the last game against Miami. He's had other pretty decent games, too. I don't think we can afford to throw him out just yet. Fitzpatrick is a middle of the road-type QB, at best. Beyond those two, we don't have anything for 2015. Petty is the future (hopefully), and Simms is not an NFL QB. He will be released before game one.

We don't have a lot of options for 2015 beyond Fitz and Geno. I'm not as pessimistic as others around here about that. I think the supporting cast will help whomever is starting this season. And our defense looks top 5 in the league. That alone will keep us in games. The forecast isn't as gloomy as some predict.

Respectfully disagree

You can't be good at times and improving if you are the worst rated QB in the league again and if when you throw out the Miami exhibition scrimmage in week 17, you've "led" your team to a spectacular 2 win 12 loss record for your second season (benched for the third win vs Pittsburgh)

As a Jet fan who watched this failure for all of his first 2 seasons, I don't want to see him ruin a third
